Has anyone seen the PBS special on the mind-body connection, the one that is sadly introduced by Dana Reeve?

I happened upon it last night and was enjoying it very much, until I saw a segment with a dr. who was very supportive of his teenage patient's undiagnosed pain, but who rattled off symptoms of fatigue, unbearable muscle pain in her shoulders, bone pain, and said that it started after a flu-like illness, and that it returns on a seemingly monthly basis.

And they were in New Jersey!

I wanted to scream at the television! I was certainly pleased that he was at least giving credence to the fact that she was in true pain and truly incapacited to the point where she could not attend school, play sports, etc., but I couldn't believe that this poor girl is facing this and it is such an obvious case of Lyme! I had to turn off the t.v. It just riled me too much and brought back to many frustrations.

I saw that too! My daughter called me in, and said, "this girl looks like she is in a lot of pain". I have watched my daughter go through all that girl was going through.

(sarcasm alert)Yes, let's not get to the ROOT of the pain, let's just teach her self-hypnosis. Good luck, and have a good life! VERY SAD

You didn't get helped by chance, did you? You didn't give up when you were feeling like crap, but everyone said you were fine! You pursued it until you found the doctor who is dedicated to wellness.

I'm glad you saw that, too, I was wondering if I was just colored in my opinion. At this point, I think everyone is infected with some kind of bacteria. Too many unexplained illnesses.

ditto here about the girl in a lot of pain! also i went to the website for the program and the special institute's website. [Mad] no lyme. guess what? they had a link for fibro and chronic pain syndrome.

also, anybody remember the Bill Moyer's special on Mind Body Health? This was a pbs series from 1991 or so. basically, it seems that some more hospitals/doctors embrace alternative medicine than in the early '90s

I had to turn it off too. Very frustrating to see them ignoring obvious organic disease.

This stuff about changing the outcome of diseases or coping with them better can be dangerous in my opinion. I know people who had a positive attitude and whole churches full of people praying for them and they still died from cancer. As did Dana Reeve.

YES! I saw it last night. My parents were watching it in the other room and I in my bedroom and when that girl came on describing things and they said it all started after a "flu-like illness" I went down the hall to my parents and said, "Does that not look exactly like Lyme to you?" Of course they agreed and it was so frustrating to watch.

Other than that, I liked the rest of the series (or what I saw of it, I wasn't paying total attention). I'm very interested in the mind-body connection and I think the techniques used in the series could help cope with pain and other symptoms, but of course not cure them and only help in conjunction with other treatment.

Peace and healing,
Annie

Well, I am really glad to hear that so many of you saw it and felt the same way. I hate the effect a show like that has on me: It stirs up so much anger, which I know is not healthy.

Hi Julie,
Noticed you were in Byfield,I'm in W. Newbury.

I saw that segment of the show and couldn't believe it for 2 reasons;

1st, that kid probably did have Lyme and
2nd, the doctor was saying that rather than look for the cause of the problem, just cover it up!

Yiks!!!!!!!!!

You may have missed it but at near the end of the first hour the teenage girl who had fibromyalgia and flu-like symptoms and was relegated to the couch was able to get her life back with the treatment from the mind body doc. It showed her at the end playing softball and being back to normal.

I taped the show and have watched that segment a few times now.

I am afraid most of did not see the "happy ending" because we were so frustrated by the approach! That is good to hear, though.

Lucy--I emailed you a private message...woudl love to know where you are in W. Newbury and who you see as a dr.

I went to a mind/body center at a teaching hospial. While it was well intentiond, it was a waste of time and $ and delayed my Lyme diagnosis. It did little to curb my sxs.
