Reporter Lundgren: Dr. Raymond Dattwyler is chief of the Lyme Disease Clinic at University Hospital at Stonybrook on Long Island, New York. His team probably treats more patients than anywhere else in the country.
Dattwyler: Lyme disease may be the great masquerader of the 1980s and 90s in that it can do almost anything.
Lundgren: Specifically, Lyme has been known to cause arthritis, meningitis, encephalitis, heart block, numbness, paralysis, mental confusion, and memory loss. It is carried by this deer tick, tiny as a grain of sand and harder to spot than the common American dog tick. As you walk through the grass, it can fall on your body. And if you don't pull it off, the tick can bite you. This is the germ, shaped like a corkscrew and called a spirochete, first cousin of the spirochete that causes syphilis, and equally elusive.
Dattwyler: Once you get Lyme disease or once you get syphilis, the body's immune system doesn't deal with it terribly well. It doesn't clear that, uh, spirochete from your body, and you can be infected for, virtually forever.

This comes from http://www.britannica.com/ in the Academic version, which I was able to access through my university. Check your public or academic library to see if they subscribe (it's $70 a year for an individual, but they have a free trial if you want).
The full-text article is not much, less than 400 words. Actually pretty accurate, except they call the infectious tick Ixodes dammini, a term that hasn't been used in years, since they determined that I. dammini was the same as I. scapularis. I wrote them about that -- wonder if they'll fix it?
There are 2 brief videos, that look like they may have come from Good Morning America. That's where I got the Dattwyler quotes.

Collecting evidence like this is important, in my opinion. I am surprised that no one has done it systematically yet. One way to approach the collection is to use the lymeinfo files and look for the names of the bad guys as authors.
It would be very revealing to have a document contrasting the "then" and "now" views of the same person. Maybe starting with IDSA guideline authors and consultants like Sigal, etc.
Maybe we should prepare a list of these people, starting with
Dattwyler Steere Wormser Coyle Feder Shapiro Sigal etc

My deadline for my next PHA (www.publichealthalert.org ) article is right around the corner, and I intend to focus on how "big business" is a determining factor in how/why some of these screwball ID docs skew their "research" and the new guidelines based on how it will essentially benefit them.
I realize there is a long Conflict of Interest file to go through - but would really be eager to receive help with any additional evidence that would help me support the angle that...
Before Dr. dumbX believed one way about Lyme THEN when Dr. dumbX discovered he could make money through (name of company; gov't grant; etc.)... NOW Dr. dumbX belives...(a bunch of stupid crap)
Does that make sense? And who wants to help me find my way through this fog?
I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed with life right now - so if anyone wants to spoon feed me...
