I know he's just a fictional character on television and they have actually mentioned Lyme Disease on the program, but it makes me wonder how Dr. House would behave if any of us showed up at his hospital!

Probably just as badly as 99.9% of the ID ducks out there -- even if he is based in New Jersey!

Oh he would treat you first for one thing then another then another then almost kill you then find out it was lyme and send you home with a script for 2 doxycyciline pills 100mg and say your cured!!!
Then you would go home and get a LLMD

Forgot the bill $ 47,087.99 [Big Grin]

It's a very popular program and I bet there is some blog on him.

Last night's episode featured them killing a pt. because they treated her with steroids and then radiation before finding out she had a roaring infection and could have been treated with ANTIBIOTICS! [shake]

Maybe it was meant to alert ducks....

I actually went on a blog for House and one for Greys Anatomy and wrote a little bit about Lyme disease and it's controversy. I asked if they need a topic to stir things up they should have a program on Lyme!

he has mentioned lyme disease, lupus
many times in a diagnosis.autoimmune disease shows up almost every week.
this show has very very inteligent medical consultants.

it is very well researched and well presented.

yes i think even ducks can learn from watching this show.

one of the best shows was a lecture he gave
last year presenting 3 disease cases and asking which one was fatal.
even his staff got it wrong.

i would suggest you send a e-mail to the staff
writters and then dilemma , and they may very well have a lyme program, especially the area where the hospital is located.

they would probably only be able to narrow it down to lyme, lupus, sjorgren's,ms, als and couple other
since they all manifest the same symptoms

I LOVE House and Grey's Anatomy! I have never missed and episode for either and have the 2 seasons for both!

I love medical shows though in general, but I love these because they are more dramatic!

But, I love House because he thinks outside the box. He may get it wrong at first, but it always clicks with something so simple.

Last nights show was upsetting. The woman presented with memory problems. And fainting sort of. She got worse and they thought it was cancer then something autoimmune and they treated her with steroids and then gave her radiation.

Which destroyed the part of the body that would have fought the infection she had.

Turns out she had a common infection, staph. They tested for everything and she had STAPH!! She had a small scratch on her back from her bra strap and it got infected. That simple.

And she had to die for it. It was horrible. I loved that episode about the 3 cases! One of my faves because of the weird people like the Farmer! And Carmen Electra and the grown man Volleyball player! That was another Fave!

I think if other ducks were watching, they learned something. That sometimes it is good to look outside the box, but sometimes it can be something so simple. That shows them they should tests for EVERYTHING. They have to be smart about it.

I was shocked when he said it was STAPH. She fainted on the street because she couldn't make a dicision about some cards. It didn't show if she was taken to the emergency room, but any other emergency room would have checked her body for any type of lesion or trauma. And they would have seen it.

But, anyways, I am sorry I am babbling on. But I know EVERYTHING about it so!!

I wish they would do a story all about Lyme. I bet that would be good and confusing!

I used to be an R.N. and I enjoy watching the medical programs, but one thing that's been bothering me is that Dr. House routinely ignores simple safety precautions.

I wish the writers would get some experienced nurses to show them how to handle getting a patient out of bed.

Dr. House never sits them at the side of the bed for a minute until their blood pressure stabilizes.
He lets them stand up while he's across the room, and thinks it's funny when they collapse.

It's just amazing that all these patients who have fallen have not hit their head, getting a concussion or laceration.
[Roll Eyes]

Also, the hospital staff doesn't know how to handle patients in wheelchairs.

When you wheel a patient into an elevator, you turn around and back in.

In the episode I saw, they wheeled the patient up to the elevator, then the family got in, and the medical staff stood off to the side, while the patient unexpectedly stood up from the chair.

You need to lock the wheels before the patient stands up, or the chair will move around, and the patient might fall.

You have to move the footrests up, or the patient won't have room to stand, and will trip over them.

In the show, the wife ran out of the elevator and caught her husband under the arms before he fell.

In real life, the medical professional would have been standing right behind the wheelchair, and would have put her hand on his shoulder and stopped the patient from trying to stand up.

In the show, everyone just stood there and watched the patient.

And of course, when they give a medication, they don't bother to check the patient's wristband.
Come to think of it, I rarely see a wristband identification on a television patient.

They may have good medical consultants on House, but their nursing consultants are out to lunch.

christi:
i did not see the House episode yesterday.
this program was proabably placed in there to show even the smartest doc can miss the easiest
dx.

however, a staph infection is not a simple infection. a simple blood culuture will show staph aureus.
the new problem with staph infections is
MRSA methicillin resistant staph aureus.

this is a major problem in a hospital setting,
where staph is contacted many times thru the skin or nose.

this infection can still be fatal if a good
id doc is not around.
i had a very bad skin infection on my back
sevral months ago,
luckily my lyme doc, is my pcp, is and id doc
plus a specialist in travel and rare disease.
he was trained in pa and knows quite a bit about lyme.
he immediately ran cultures both skin and blood
and started me on bactrim.
the infection wasn't staph but the bactrim actually made me herx for 10 days.
i had not herxed in a year prior to that.

so staph can also be deadly, if not treated in time.

Just bought 2nd season of house. He has one episode where a girl with a heart transplant is getting sicker even though she was in a clean room.

Turns out she had a tick.....not in the hair on her head...but down there.

I love house. My neurologist was sort of a sleuth like him. He found my Lyme Disease. Diagnosed it and then said he could not treat (too much paper work) sent me to ID guy who said I did not look like I had Lyme. Test must be wrong and I had Fibromyalgia and the sooner I made myself comfortable with that the soon I could start to get a little better. But still may be disable for life.

Funny, hospital called Health Department to report I had Lyme (after two months) and I have had two calls from Health Department.

Ok, I went on ranting about me........

I LOVE HOUSE...

They did have ONE episode on tick paralysis, and passed it off as a lyme episode.

All they had to do was remove the tick, and, voila!, she was all better!

I am positive they could never do an episode on a lyme patient who had been to ten doctors, been told they were crazy, and cure them in 60 minutes.

Uh, uh, I can't hear house saying, "you'll be on incredibly high doses of antibiotics for the next three to seven years....maybe the rest of your life if we can get you to a maintenance level. That's the best you can hope for"

Oh...and your insurance will drop you and you will have to file for bankruptcy. Just FYI.

"oh yeah, you'll have to share your vicodin with me".

LOL!

Dr. House is a duck. He dismissed neuro lyme in a patient in one episode because her husband apparently loved her. His rationale was that he would have seen the EM rash. The end.

In one episode, House mentioned he was educated at Johns Hopkins-bummer-means he's not going to know much about lyme disease.

Wow too bad someone famous couldnt start a new medical show on Lyme alone. There is enough material with this disease to run forever!!! Between misdiagnoses, weird symptoms, family problems, and money problems caused by Lyme and just the never ending treatments, all 1,000 of them, there could be material for many years worth of shows!!!

I LOVE House too! I used to be director of purchasing for a 465 bed hospital in Chicago. Since my job lately has been "professional patient" there are a few things I don't understand about the show.

In addition to not showing nurses, they don't have any support staff. Why are the doctors always running the tests themselves? It takes years of training and accreditation to learn how to operate specialty medical equipment.

They never show nurses administering meds. No patient seems to be waiting for the pharmacist to dispense the meds. Meds seem to be always at their fingertips. In reality, it never works this way. Some doctors are the worst when it comes to finding a vein. Give me a skilled nurse any day!

For example, I have never had my neuro operating the CT scan or MRI machines. My gastro doesn't look at my biopsy slides after an EGD or colonoscopy either. That's the job of a pathologist. Doctors get a written report or a summary of test results prepared by another doctor.

In the airplane/possible meningitis episode House mentioned that he was a member of the Infectious Diseases Society. I got a good giggle over Cuddy developing psychosomatic meningitis.

House always mentions sarcoidosis as being one of the usual culprits. When they finally do diagnosis sarcoid the treatment is prednisone. Sometimes it goes away with no treatment at all. That would be a very boring show!

There are much better meds than Vicodin available that are kinder to your liver. Maybe
they plan on a future cliff hanger about his liver taking a dive. They should get him on a long acting 12 hour medication for pain.

I also am interested in how they get warrants to search people's homes for substances without a police official involved.

Not to mention the extremely unprofessional attire by Cutty.

Still.......I make sure I never miss an episode. Hugh Laurie IS the show.

Lol, Lisa -- just everything that's talked about here could make for a zillion shows...

yes many steps are left out.
yes there are no nurses, lab techs, pathologists,
radiologists, xray techs.
no support staff whatsoever.
it is very inaccurate from that standpoint, but was written to be like that.
its like any other fiction movie, they show you what they want you to see, not the boring stuff.
sorry any of the above, don't mean to knock you,
i was a lab tech, phlebotomist, blood bank,
at night ,by myself for 3 years, taught by the hospital.
One guy came into er one night, a "real doctor"
was in er. came down got blood work
ran the cbc thru machine, would give correct
reading.
went in back to hematolgy and ran a diluted sample manually, would not run.

so i ran a test blood and ran fine.
ran a slide, which is done by computer now.
look in the microscope, and behold, nothing but
white cells.
called the doctor down, said this was emergency.
come look at slide.
he came down all mad , said why did
you call me.
i gave him the slide, he looked said
"so, what am i looking at"
duh, idiot the guys got a white cell count of
2 million what do you think it is.
"i didn't do well in pathology"
well i can't diagnose since i'm only a dental student, but this guy may have a month to live.
"really its that bad"
yes ,its that bad, talk to the pathologist tomorrow and admit him.

next day the duck was fired.
the patient died 2 days later
AML.
see i knew about ducks way before i had lyme disease.

so House wants you to think docs actually do all this stuff. they wouldn't even know how.
