Update: The trip was uneventful; we're back home.
I received a phone call from the pilot Monday morning...he volunteered to fly us to Pennsylvania, but Angel Flight didn't have a return pilot. This pilot said he'd have to ask his wife, but if he takes us up, he wouldn't leave us stranded.
The pilot flew down from Kentucky Monday night and spent the night. He spent Tuesday night in Ohio/Pennsylvania, then flew home after dropping us off Wednesday evening. He was a helicopter pilot in Vietnam. He was the record-holder for the most Angel Flights last year...he flew 54 missions.
We had a very long flight home...it took 9 hours! We boarded the plane at 9:30 am...stopped once to refuel and once for an emergency potty break. The pilot didn't complain or act irritated. We landed at 6:30 pm. My feet were aching. We had only eaten breakfast that morning.
The children were pretty good considering the length of the flight.
Next time I need to bring some child-friendly activities to keep them occupied.
My 5 year old son sat up front with the pilot. He wore a headset to be able to talk to the pilot and me. Every few minutes he'd have a new question..."Captain...captain..." HIs little voice was so cute.
The flight up was "only" 5 and a half hours, with one stop to refuel. The first half was perfectly smooth, but the second half was rough due to rain. Both kids were nauseated; thank God only one vomited since we had only one barf bag. My feet were cold; it was 45 degrees in the plane. Next time I will wear closed toe shoes.
The flight back was a real test...the wind was in our face and it was bumpy most of the way. The seat was a very tight place...I was on the verge of claustrophobia because I was not able to stretch my legs or barely change positions. I kept flexing my ankles to help my circulation. I had to put the children's car seats in an upright position...no reclining so they could nap comfortably.
I had a short, sweet visit with my mom. She drove up and met us at the airport. We spent the night at a hotel.
I was surprised to see many lakes that are low due to the drought. The lakes reminded me of a parrot's eyes from the sky....dark eyes surrounded by a ring of a pale featherless area. The water was the dark eye...the dry exposed shore was the featherless ring around the eye.
I appreciate your prayers and concern. I'm glad to be home. The trip was exhausting physically...not financially.
Angel Flight enabled my children to see the doctor!
