I need help finding policy that speaks to spotty, unpredictable attendance at high school due to lyme disease. My son is in 12 grade and can go to school some days and some days can't, he never knows when he will be up to attending. The school is baffled by this. Please help

I'm a former teacher, and I know what a child with cancer did. She attended school when she was well enough, but here, if you miss 10 days in a row they have to remove you from the rolls.
Then she would go on homebound teaching. When she was well enough to return she could come back.
I'm sure each district has a policy for kids like that, and it seems to me it would not be difficult to transfer the same policy to kids with Lyme.
If you simply ask about a policy for kids with Lyme you will get nowhere, in all probability.

Get a letter from your son's doctor, specifying that his symptoms are more severe at times. Since he is already a senior, you would probably do well to have a simple 504 plan, specifying what kinds of accommodations can help get him through this year successfully.

This is good advice...m,y daughter graduated last pring from HS after a many year struggle with the school to get them to grasp that her spotty attendence was NOT truancy, drug abuse, indifference, manipulation...or whatever.
When I needed to get the school to stop acting annoyed and outraged by her absences...I would threaten to call the superintendent of schools...
this ususally got us what she needed...but it was exhausting and demoralizing to have to resort to that. She didnt get diagnosed with Lyme til march of her senior year and it took over 2 months of getting the bum's rush out of doctors' offices before I found her an LLMD...
...If your son has a doctor who is treating him then YES get this note put in his 504...the school will have no legal ground to stand upon if they harrass him for being out sick, downgrade him, threaten not to graduate him or fail to provide home instruction.

I think the LDA site has a pamphlet on this- childrens rights in this regard- if I remember righT!!! (Love your name btw*)!!
