I have been struggling with Lyme and co-infections since the fall of 2007. we are visiting friends in MoreHead, North Carolina. It is about 1 mile from the beach. Does anyone know the risk of Lyme in this area? We user Herbal Armor on our skin but I am very paranoid with everywhere I go.
We are from Southeastern PA, so I know all about high risk areas.

It's pretty bad at the beaches of NC. All those grasses and pine trees. You'd think it wouldn't be, but it's supposed to be even worse than PA and NJ.
There's only so much you can do to protect yourself. Just keep yourself protected and use common sense and enjoy your vacation.
P.S. Geranium oil is a potent insect repellent.

I am from NC and I have lyme disease.
I was inland, only 1 hour from the beach.
I think NC has way more cases of lyme disease than is reported. Why, because when I was there, I never heard anything about lyme.
No one warned us about being protected. Only hunters were told to tuck their pants in their shoes.
Heck, we ran around in the woods, that was our "playhouse". I just PI$$e$ me off knowing that I was out there pretty much begging for lyme disease....

the coastal areas of nc are considered moderate risk. there were studies around the military bases on the coast in the 1990's to determine that. I know 2 people that got Lyme on our coast.But it is sure a nice place to play! Lymeinhell is right, protect yourself, and then have fun

I am positive I got bit in South Carolina (I know not north, but close!), I stayed with a friend and her family on an island.
Never been the same since. I wish I'd never gone on what otherwise would have been a great trip.
But hey, at least I got a lasting souvenior =(

I think Lyme can be spread by other things besides ticks, but maybe I am wrong. Hopefully someone will come along and correct me if I am.
But I think that horseflies and some mosquitos may transmit Lyme. From what I remember about the NC beach when I went there as a teenager, there were both of these things...the flies during the day and the mosquitos at night.

we live south of wilmington on the coast and also in mountains overgrowth of deer+ lots of mice= lyme disease. i was told there was very little lyme, but all the conditions are right for lyme disease. they just killed 110 dear in my community 2 miles from Oak Island Beach.
Lots of ticks in the mountains. so take the high road and use ramps to beach. stay out of high grass. beach and water are safe

Yes....what a good question.
We have family reunions down on Nags Head.
I wonder what the risk is there.
What makes it worse is my sister-in-law always wants to stop at her house inland before heading to the beach. They live in field and woods edge.
Her son hunts deer....brings them home to clean. They have a dog that runs around outside and then comes in to sack out on the furniture.
That same dog runs the beach house. That dog is why I don't want to go to the beach house. They think washing it on my behalf is enough.
What about the furniture? They look at me like I'm nuts...."the dogs clean they say".
I look at them like they are....With everything you have some clue that I've been through, how could you even send you're son into that danger?
I believe he has Lyme and so does the the mother. She has been mysteriously unwell. Same old story...test after test with nothing. She has a terrible pain under her rib...where have we all heard that before.
I dare not say. I remember her disapproval at medicating my daughter year ago.

I know I got Lyme in the NC foothills-I was an avid runner in the woods behind my house!
And the area is infesed with deer!
Now I live in Jekyll Island Ga and have never seen so many ticks before in my life!

Well, I don't remember a tick bite, but I can remember how long I have felt like crap, and that has been since I was in NC.
I know I have been bitten by mosquitos, chiggers, fleas, horseflys, and yellow flys. Again, I still don't remember a tick bite.

I still believe they are being trasferred by more insects than just ticks, but that is me.
