I went upstairs to bed with my legs in terrific pain due to my own fault, after 45 minutes of attempting to fall asleep, I remembered the dog I saw at the park today.

The dog was a black lab, had one front leg and one back leg.

It's owner had two other dogs she was also taking for a walk. At first when I saw this lab hopping up and down a few steps then sit to rest,

I was angry at the owner... felt she was being cruel and I felt so sorry for the dog.

so I continued to watch...the dog would hop, sit, hop, sit...then I noticed the owner had a longer leash on the lab. The other two dogs could continue to walk while the lab rested.

I guess if that was my dog, I most likely would have hadicapped him more because I didn't see past his disability.

Yeah- good point about the owner recognizing the dog's ability-rather than giving up because of disability.
There's a cool video around of a dog born with only two back legs-walks upright all the time-with ease. Talk about adapting !

Dogs and cats are so cool. Their resilience is inspiring.

If animals could talk... I bet we could learn to be more compassionate towards others, and the joy of living even with disabilities.

I have a kitten with contracted tendons in her front legs.

When she was rescued by a tech at my vets, she was literally walking on her front elbows - her front legs were bowed in at 90 degree angles. She was the happiest (and tiniest) little kitten I'd ever seen and I cried when I saw her hobbling on her elbows in a playpen.

Luckily, the tech brought her in to the office and the vet decided not to put her to sleep - which is what most vets would have done. He said let's just wait and see.

I just couldn't accept that this little kitten would spend her life in a playpen (because they were unsure of her dx, they weren't going to adopt her out).

I searched the internet, and lo and behold, found the exact cause of her apparent deformity. The tendons in her front legs were contracted - the bones were fine. She just needed a few months of splinting to stretch out the muscles.

http://www.pandecats.com/x/contracted_tendons_ofthefrontlegs.shtml

I brought the info to the vet, they gave it a shot, and within a week she was up on her feet (albeit in splints).

And I was fortunate enough to be the one they let adopt her. I splinted her legs for about 4 months. Her legs are not perfect, they're a little swooped, because she was already about 4 months old by the time I found the info.

She hops when she walks, her tail is also crooked, she's missing a few toes, and at 10 months she is still only 3 pounds (teeny tiny). Her eyes also stayed blue.

We call her 'Cricket', because of the hopping and she also is a very vocal squeaker.

And not a day goes by that I don't think about the miracle of her.

She is perpetually a happy little sprite that greats you by lying on the floor and doing a big stretch.

As I often say 'You can never have a bad day with a Cricket in the house'. She truly is a blessing and brings an instant smile to all who see her. It's a constant reminder of what really matters.

Just an update on my dog...Buzz...

his new cart arrived on Friday....
so far so good....he is doing pretty good with it...

the first thing he did when I put him in it was cart on over to his toy basket..too cute... [Smile]

he hasn't shown me any sign that he dosen't want to be in it....I can barly buckle him in before he starts wanting to go....

he can be pretty fast too...

yesturday we had him out in his cart and this big dog came by with it's owner....they walk by everyday...
usually Buzz who ways less then 20lbs... has to sit there and watch them go by....but yesturday he carted on over to the big dog...barked at it and scared it... [spinning smile] ...too cute...

Aaahhh!!! I love animals!!!

I have an 8 year old black lab named Rocky. I can see walking a 2-legged dog, especially a labbie.

They're happiest being active if it's not painful.

Loved to hear about all the other pets too!
