I have waited 3 years for the t.v. show "House" to have an episode relating to Lyme disease!
Tonight , they finally did it.
A father and step-daughter got Rickettsia! It was Rickettsial pox that a person gets from a bite of an insect!
NOT ONLY THAT!!!!
They managed to make the CDC look really STUPID!!!!
YEAH!!!!!
The CDC wouldn't listen and let the father die!!!
THe doctors begged the CDC to treat the daughter,,,, who was still alive,,,,With DOXY!!!
It was a great episode, complete with those air-tight suits and everything,,,,
straight out of LAB 257!!!! way cool! A real "Plum Island" feel to the episode!
Has anyone else watched it yet????

I wonder if the producer's and writer's of that episode have read "Lab 257" and watched "Under Our Skin",,,
or if this was just some random idea that they got from the doctor's that they have on staff( in order to keep the info correct)?

I watched it. I couldn't make out the name they were calling the bacteria. I got the pox part.
Were they giving another medical name for rickettsia? Because I didn't identify with the name?
Tutu, it was from a slave ship 30 years ago and someone had scaped scabs off the sick and put it in a jar. It waS found by this family scuba diving.
Jar broke, so started the drama. It wasn't until reading story from survivors of this slave ship that they realized the captains cat got ill, lost all it's hair, died that they identified it ?????pox.

I was just so glad that they had an episode about a co-infection, and that they showed that it could be easily cured by Doxy.
I was also glad that they made fun of the CDC, and hoped that lots of people would reconsider their misdiagnosis that they got based on the CDC guidlines.
At the beginning of the show they even make referance to the fact that some diseases only exist in labs for biowarfare use.
It sure had a "Plum Island" feel to the show.
The father and daughter had Rickettsial pox, which is transmitted by the bite of a insect, maybe a tick even. I haven't done very much research yet. But what I did read seem to suggest that this is related to all other Rickettsia bacteria.
The CDC let the father die because they were so convinced that he had small pox. They managed to save the daughter because House's team realized that she had Rickettsial pox.
This is a great start. Maybe they will do an episode about Lyme disease in particular, and all the co-infections. WIth a story line similar to all of ours! ( a person shows up in an emergency room very sick but no one knows what is wrong).

yes , maybe rickettsia pox was only around 200 years ago,
but I just loved the fact that they made the CDC look stupid and
that they daughter only needed DOXY to be cured!
I only did a tiny bit of research and I think the Rickettsia pox is one of the strains of Rickettsia,
both are transmitted through a bite of an insect,
Now I am going to hope and pray that they have a case on that show that is Lyme disease with a few co-infections thrown in to make it a really exciting episode! haha!

You know.. one thing puzzles me. I think "House" treats patients terribly and with no respect and for that reason I don't like the show.
He treats patients just like so many of us have been treated. (not well)
How is it that so many here like to watch it? I've always been puzzled by that.
Sometimes I will watch it, but not very often.

Oh, one other thing. Once the episode is posted on internet, they will show medical research from the show. Usually found on the right side of the page from the video.

I actually have more respect for a House,
I don't have patience for much that is on t.v. nowadays, but I liked the show House,
because this doctor does not care what every other doctor does and does not care what every other doctor thinks and he doesn't care if it gets him in trouble.
He rarely sees the patients because he knows that he is rude, and he also knows that he might let his emotions, bias, get in the way,,,,,
or he might judge someone by how they look,,
he sticks to the facts,
I like him because he is smart and he thinks outside the box.
I am an artist , and I can relate a lot to House. I have a harder time being around people one-on-one, but I can easily preform in front of a huge audience.
Lymetoo, there were many episodes that they did about having House detox in a mental hospital. He was also made to deal with his inner demons, and during the detox time, I think he started to turn into a nicer guy.
I think those episodes were last season.
Well, I hope you all like the episode!!!

Missing, Next Tuesday when they put the episode up for viewing on the link I posted, go to the right hand bottom of page. It will have "Medical Research" from the show.
If you go on the website now, you can view the episode from last week, it will give you the research from that specific show. Lower right hand of webpage.
Tutu, yes I can understand how you feel about someone who treats everyone so rotten. But, the House character will not stop until he finds the answer and he does.
How many doctors did we see who treated us badly and didn't have the answers? Many.
The perfect world would be the really nice doctor who comes up with the answer and cure. But, it would make a boring TV show.
I find the Dr. House character very complex and that is what draws me to the show.

I love House. I know he is a complete jerk on the show but he is a good doctor. How many doctors have you met like that, horrible personality but smart? A ton, right.
But there are funny times, and times that shows House really does have a heart somewhere under that tough exterior.
I loved this episode merely because of the fact that they made the CDC look like idiots. I was talking to the TV the whole time. LOL. Telling them to prove the stupid CDC wrong, say they really DON'T know everything!!!

Oh and apparently they actually did a "Lyme" case years ago but played it down quite a bit. I would love for them to do a new episode, make the real Lyme the diagnosis, and make the CDC look like idiots again!

Yes, they had a lyme episode a few yeara ago. I can't remember but I think this little girl was paralyzed and they couldn't figure out why.
House had to sneek her in an elevate to look under her gown for the tick and he found it. Once it was remeover the lyme paralysis was gone.
Not really much about lyme but at least he didn't give up till he found that tick and lyme was mentioned.
I missed the last episode but will watch it on Hulu.

Yeah, it was pretty good. I was trying to make the correct diagnosis during the entire episode and the closest I came was TB, which....they included in the differential, but it ended up not being that, plus it was advancing way too fast, where as mycobacterium tuberulosis grows slowly.
Rickessia pox was just out of left field, I wouldn't have gotten it since I haven't studied it yet.

Because it's not real, and it's more about the character's flaws, growth, regression, and the relationships surrounding him. Everyone loves a tortured genius, who ironically tortures others. The show could be about solving crime, or.......... breaking out of prison (Oh wait that one was done, and had HUGE ratings too).
House would not be a good doctor in real life if the show is evidence of his diagnostic ability and temperament. He would kill as many as he saves, he'd emotionally devastate people and their families. Without the aid of his "team" he'd be wrong quite a lot.
Let's not forget the episodes when Lyme Disease or tick-born infections were discussed. All the information he knows are based on the IDSA principles. He always says the same thing "No rash, uh, test was negative, would have endocarditis and heart block, blah blah."

Actually, he had something wrong with his leg muscle.
They wanted to do an experiemental treatment to see if they could make the muscle pain go away....or something like that.
The experiment didn't work. He now has a huge scar on his leg and it causes a lot of pain for him
