Hi. My 11 yr. son wad dx'd with chronic lyme in February and he's been on oral antibiotic since. Unfortunately, he has not improved much esp. his neurological symptoms. Because of this, I believe there's a good chance that his doctor will be putting him on IV treatment very soon. My question is whether it's insane to think about traveling with him esp, if he has a picc line? We should probably stick close to home but at the same time, I hate for him to miss out on anything else. Thanks, Jen

There is no problem traveling with a PICC line, really. Other than he will have to have a weekly dressing change.

Keep your travel plans and have fun!
Before you go make sure that you know how to change the dressing and care for the PICC. Pack extra supplies and bring the doctor's contact information incase of an emergency.

We recently did a long flight with the PICC.
- check with your doctor. - Make sure to get up and walk around every hour or so (avoid blood clots). - check with your airline. With Delta, it was permissible to bring and EXTRA carryon, if it only contained medical supplies. - I had a cooler bag with freezies inside of a small carryon with all the medical stuff - make sure the carryon will fit in even the smaller planes, so you don't have to gate-check anything - carry on everything you cannot afford to lose, or cannot buy on the other end. i.e. all IV antibiotics, flush syringes, bandage change equipment (if you do it yourself), and medications - make sure all the medications have labels
Give yourself extra time for security. We had no trouble at all - but they did do some extra checks on the iv infusion balls (swabbing to check for explosives).
Kiddo went through in a wheelchair as well. We could not have made it through the airports without the wheelchairs - airports are much bigger than I remembered!
