Now that I am feeling better my Golden has Anaplasmosis for the..I don't know how many times. We have been down this road too many times....

Just interesting how easy it is to get my dog treated for lyme and co-infections and the dose of doxy is 500 mg.s - for a 62 lb. dog.

I understand dogs process meds differently, but geez..I wish my Vet could be my doctor.

The annual heartworm test your dog gets should test for lyme, ehrlichia and maybe anaplasmosis too. (depends on test). I do not know how many false negative we get... but I have heard that it's possible. I wouldn't worry about lyme from a brown dog tick.
But that said... I live in an area where there "are no deer ticks"... I have lyme and we get several positive lyme and erhlechias each year.
Ask your vet if they use the idexx 3dx or 4dx at your next annual.

THIS IS AN OUTRAGE!!!

Putting a higher value on a dogs life and well being,

or ANY ANIMAL! is absolutely outrageous.

Our poor children are suffering, but I see more care for horses and dogs and all animals and my daughter is abandoned by our health care system!

I also have Lyme disease!

That is IT!! I am upping my dosages RIGHT NOW!!!!

ooooooghghghghghghj!!!

that's me, just getting a little upset about how much antibiotics a dog gets and I got told that I was depressed!

missing; Did not mean to get anyone upset!!!!

From what my Vet told me - regarding the high doxy dose - is that dogs process meds much differently then humans and need a dose almost double what we would take (for a 62lb. dog). Same goes with the Benadryl I give her. 1mg per lb... Gee if I took 125mg. of benadryl I would not be breathing!

The test my vet uses is the 4DX. It shows a range for lyme and co.s , so we are able to compare markers from last time to this time.

I too am outraged at what we (humans) must got through to get help. It is a conversation at every dinner, every night. Both my husband and I have lyme - pretty chronic and have had to jump through hoops to get treatment. Sick of it all...

At least I know it is one less battle that I have to fight when my dog gets sick.

Doxy and other pet abx can be cheaply purchased thru amazon . Thomas labs makes many cheap ones and they are pharmacy grade. You might check agrimeds or amazon .( Or 4 corners pharmacy ) ...

Are dogs usually asymptomatic with this stuff?

Do they have reliable tests to test dogs for Lyme and co?

Yes, maybe, and yes. Sometimes it is hard to tell if your dog has Lyme.

Their tests are better than ours!

Alice; Get your dog tested. Ask for the 4DX. That test saved my dogs life - literally.

A few years ago she was so sick with Anaplasmosis and could barely walk - was only 2 years old. No one could figure out what was wrong with her. We treated for lyme but she only got partially better for a short period of time.

One Vet did some other test (forgot the name) that did NOT test for co.'s. So I sought out a LLDVM, well at least lyme knowlegable, and he tested with the 4DX and that is when we found the co.infection..

I want the 4DX myself!!!!

Yes, the American Dog Tick, also known as the Wood Tick, most certainly DOES carry and transmit Lyme, Babesia, and many other co's. That has been shown in research. And I've personally experienced it, too. Don't be fooled by what local people or health depts think about what carries what.

Do any of you get the Lyme vaccine for your dogs?

My dog is 13 pounds and the vet just gave him 50 mg of Doxy 2 times a day. AFter the 30 days he completely relapsed, so I contacted Merry Girl and she said that can definitely happen, so I ordered 30 tablets of 100 mg Doxy on Amazon for $20. I will cut them in half and give them to him twice a day. It's the same dose he was getting.

Also good to know you can buy lots of antibiotics right on Amazon under Fish or Bird meds. They are pharmaceutical grade human meds.

My dog had both Lyme and Anaplasmosis, by the way. He relapsed as soon as the Doxy was gone. I saved by not taking him back to vet and just ordering more Doxy on Amazon.
