Many processed foods are made with a coal tar derivative chemical that causes hyperactivity in children

- by Mike Adams - Friday, February 17, 2012

(NaturalNews) Would you knowingly feed your children an ingredient derived from coal tar?

That's exactly what you may be doing, if you let them eat any orange or yellow artificially-colored products

including sodas, cheese-flavored products, flavored chips, pickles or a myriad of other foods and beverages.

The industrial waste-derived coloring chemical tartrazine is a common ingredient in all these foods, . . .

. . . Tartrazine, also known as E102 or Yellow #5, was one of the colorings linked to childhood hyperactivity in a landmark 2007 study conducted by the United Kingdom's Food Standards Agency.

As a consequence, products containing it must carry a warning label anywhere in the European Union. . . .

Caution: Aspartate; Glutamine; and Phenylalanine

Each of these can cause far too much nervous system and adrenal system stimulation for many who deal with lyme.

This information is especially for those with any degree of:

toxicity, exhaustion, anxiety, irritability, agitation, panic attacks, tremors, startles, or seizures:

it is best to avoid these three particular amino acids (other than in normal doses from food or maybe in a balanced formula with other amino acids & other nutrients, but not above the average daily dose.

Even at that, some people need to avoid excess foods that contain one or both of those as they can be too stimulating for the brain when it's already overstimulated from neuro-toxicity issues.

Specific Detail here, especially about Glutamate / Glutamine (which some do okay with but others may really react badly):

One reason we don't see more journalists and medical network staff report the truth about food additives is that the food industry (along with the pharmaceutical industry) signs their paychecks.

Just look at the advertisements that keep the networks flush with case. Processed foods, Drugs, your local medical centers - oh, and car ads.

Cars also add to our personal toxicity with their petroleum interiors that off-gas for what seems like forever.

All the advertising costs can be written off as a tax deduction, too, as a business expense. We are getting hit hard and no journalist is really telling us the truth.

Who is, then? I find www.mercola.com one of the best educational websites for human well-being.

This is not so much about sugar as FOOD ADDITIVES and the result of highly processed foods (simple sugars WITH chemicals). Likely, GMOs are involved, too.

The sugar, itself, is also just too highly processed so to say this is how sugar acts is not quite true. It's how processed sugar acts, out of balance.

CRAVING AN ICE-CREAM FIX - by Tara Parker-Pope

The New York Times - September 20, 2012

Excerpts:

. . . researchers have found that sugar-binging rats show signs of opiatelike withdrawal when their sugar is taken away -- including chattering teeth, tremoring forepaws and the shakes.

When the rats were allowed to resume eating sugar two weeks later, they pressed the food lever so frantically that they consumed 23 percent more than before. . . .

. . . ``We don't abuse lettuce, turnips and oranges,'' says Dr. Brownell, co-editor of the new book ``Food and Addiction.''

``But when a highly processed food is eaten, the body may go haywire. Nobody abuses corn as far as I know, but when you process it into Cheetos, what happens?'' . . .

. . . Dr. Brownell says that the brain science should lead us to question how food companies are manipulating their products to get us hooked.

``With these foods, personal will and good judgment get overridden. People want these foods, dream about these foods, crave them.'' . . .

Excellent article, very thorough (although I think it is short-sighted regarding "food adversion" and there is no mention about how MCS (multiple chemical sensitivies) or Porphyria could be causing troubles with food.

For those with lyme/TBD and other infections that create a neurotoxic load on the body, a person can have various kinds of reactions that may not be exactly in the allergy range.

But that is for the naturopathic authors to explore and many have done so well.

And the GMO film above explains so much more about how allergies can run amok, too. Still, for what it is, this is a very good piece.

The section on food additive is especially important - that's the main gem here for now but I also learned many other things:

Extra large eggs are not really "humane" and even "humanely raised" means very little in the details. It's not what we think.

HYDROGENATED OIL ? JUST SAY "NO"

http://www.naturalnews.com/019410_trans_fat_hydrogenated_oils.html

The health dangers of trans fats have been known for decades, yet food companies still poison customers with hydrogenated oils

http://www.natural-health-information-centre.com/hydrogenated-fats.html

Hydrogenated fats responsible for many diseases

Excerpts:

. . . in 1978, Dr Mary Enig proved that cancer rates were directly related to consumption of vegetable oils (including hydrogenated fats) and total fat intake, but NOT related to animal fat consumption. . . .

. . . Hydrogenated fats are literally "plastics", whch do not have the same properties as natural fats. . . .

. . . What is Hydrogenation?

Hydrogenation is the chemical name for the addition of hydrogen to an existing molecule, usually an organic molecule which has a doubl-bond between two carbon atoms. That bond is broken and a hydrogen atom binds to each of the free bonds on adjacent carbon atoms.

H2C=CH2 becomes H3C-CH3

This is achieved by forcing hydrogen, at high temperature (250-400C) and pressure into the liquid oil, usually in the presence of a catalyst such as nickel or platinum, over several hours.

Unfortunately, the process can't control where the hydrogen atoms are added to the molecule, resulting in a mixture of totally unnatural fats, many of which are trans fatty acids. Fatty acids are the "building blocks" of fats, in much the same way as amino acids are the building blocks of proteins.

The resulting fats are totally unnatural hydrogenated fats.

The consequences of of creating hydrogenated fats are:

* The melting point of the oil is raised, turning many previously liquid oils into solids.

* Shelf-life is increased, as the resulting oil is less susceptible to degrading over time (maybe bacteria have a difficult time eating it too!).

* All nutritional value in the original oil is lost.

* The texture of the resultant solid can be made to resemble that of natural, animal fats.

* The previously perfectly natural oil becomes a totally unnatural, dangerous, relatively undigestable "plastic".

* Tissues made with the "false" fat cannot function properly, as thousands of enzymes can't bind to them, giving rise to a host of disease states. . . .

- full article at link above.

======================================

http://www.askdrsears.com/?q=topics/family-nutrition/facts-about-fats/hydrogenated-fats

Hydrogenated Fats - Ask Dr. Sears

Excerpt:

Hydrogenated oils are saturated fats and behave that way in the body. Crackers or cookies made with hydrogenated fats may proclaim themselves to be cholesterol-free, but a closer look at the label will show that the product still contains plenty of artery-clogging saturated fat. There's also a problem with these fats that the label won't tell you about.

Hydrogenated fats contain another kind of fat that falls outside of the saturated and unsaturated categories. . . .

. . . Dr. Udo Erasmus in his book Fats that Heal, Fats that Kill

aptly describes trans fatty acids as a "molecule that has its 'head on backwards'." Trans fats are as bad (or worse) for your arteries as saturated fats. . . .

- the full, and very detailed article, at the link above.

How the soap you buy can end up in our food - in our stomachs. This article is about PLASTIC.

Other than these plastic beads, the chemicals in soaps also wind up in our water and in our foods (veggies, chicken, beef, fish, etc.)

'PLASTIC MICRO BEADS TO BE REMOVED FROM SOAP

[- in 2015 ! interjection by poster]

- By Elizabeth Landau, CNN - January 8, 2013

(CNN) -- If you use exfoliating soaps, you might not know those little beads may be made of plastic -- or think about what happens to them when they go down the drain.

But it's on the minds of marine science researchers, as well as a major company.

Unilever, the company that makes Dove soaps, Vaseline, Pond's skin cream and other personal care products, announced recently it's phasing out the use of "plastic micro beads as a 'scrub' material" in its personal care products.

By 2015, the phase out should be complete, Unilever said. The company said the "the issue of plastics particles in the ocean is an important issue."

Microplastics are plastic pieces less than 5 millimeters (0.2 inches) long, and they are a major type of marine debris.

They are used as scrubbers in hand cleansers and other domestic and industrial cleaning products . . . .

. . . Research in microplastics suggests that very small particles, even tens of microns in diameter, can be retained in the tissues of marine invertebrates, Thompson said.

A 2008 study from Thompson's group found that microplastic particles remained in mussels for 48 days. . . .

I don't know about others but I am appauled to read the above detail. More appauled that it will be until 2015 before this practice is stopped. But that, even if they stopped now, so much is still out there floating around and will wind up in our food chain forever.

Those who have energy, I plead to find and join your voice with the appropriate political and social groups already working to make change sooner. The link above is one place to begin.

Shopping habits also matter.

Ractopamine: The Meat Additive on Your Plate That's Banned Almost Everywhere But America

The asthma drug-like growth additive has enjoyed stealth use in the US food supply for a decade despite being widely banned overseas.

- by Martha Rosenberg, AlterNet

Two excerpts:

Have you ever heard of ractopamine? Neither have most US food consumers though it is used in 80 percent of US pig and cattle operations.

The asthma drug-like growth additive, called a beta-agonist, has enjoyed stealth use in the US food supply for a decade despite being widely banned overseas. It is marketed as Paylean for pigs, Optaflexx for cattle and Topmax for turkeys. . . .

. . . In an early Canadian study, monkeys given ractopamine "developed daily tachycardia"-- rapid heart beat.

Rats fed ractopamine developed a constellation of birth defects like cleft palate, protruding tongue, short limbs, missing digits, open eyelids and enlarged heart.

Two cousin drugs of ractopamine, clenbuterol and zilpaterol, cause such adrenalin effects in humans they are banned by the Olympics. . . .

American mom wants European M&Ms

-by William Hudson, CNN - January 7, 2014

Video: 2 minutes - and article

Excerpts:

What gives M&Ms their bright colors? That depends on which country you're in. . . .

. . . Shutters says her son Trenton showed noticeable improvements in mood and attention span after she removed artificial coloring from his diet a few years ago. M&Ms were his favorite candy. "I just could not believe that something so small could make that big of a difference," Shutters says. . . .

. . . As of Tuesday morning, the petition had more than 142,000 supporters. . . .

Change.org Petition: M&M's Candies: Stop Using Artificial Dyes Linked To Hyperactivity

Excerpt: Did you know that M&M’s candies contain harmful, petroleum-based, artificial dyes that can trigger hyperactivity in sensitive children? I believe eliminating these dyes did wonders for my family’s health. . . .

. . . found out that many families were using an “elimination diet” to isolate and remove harmful ingredients -- particularly artificial dyes. By removing dyes like those found in M&M's, they were able to delay, reduce, and sometimes eliminate the need for medication. . . .

. . . I’m not trying to keep my kids from being kids. They can have treats. But they don’t need petroleum-based dyes. . . .

For those who enjoy certain teas (and flavored coffees, too), be aware that some can contain "natural flavors" so investigation as to exactly what that means really matters.

Many teas also contain pesticides. There is so much homework to do and I hate that as much as the next person. Still, I want as much control as possible over what I consume.

TEA - Focus "Troubled Consumer Products"

page 5: 1. Healthy Tea?

page 6: . . . We tested eleven Celestial Seasonings teas from the brand’s most popular categories (green tea, wellness tea, sleepy time/kids tea and k-cup).

Results showed that many of the teas contained so many pesticides that they violated US regulatory standards. It is important to note that at no time did we take custody of, touch or handle any of the tea samples.

Rather, we had the products shipped directly to Eurofins from the Company’s website and other online retailers.

We selected Eurofins because it is an ISO/IEC 17025 accredited and independent laboratory, and it is the world leader in food, pharmacological and environmental testing. . . .

2. Teas Violate FDA and EPA Pesticide Standards

. . . 91% of the Celestial Seasonings teas tested contained residues of pesticides either in amounts exceeding federally prescribed tolerance levels or for which no regulatory limit has been established under federal law, meaning that such samples violated EPA pesticide regulation 40 CFR 180. . . .

While it's no joy to point out the deception and deceit of the food "industry" toward the cells of our bodies, we can become empowered and be proactive in our choices. We do have choice to seek out good, real foods that can provide great flavor and excellent nutrients, even if in a beverage.

While I've not read the book, the review does mention some things about MSG that just do not apply to those with lyme. It's still not an "okay" food additive for anyone with neurological issues. Just keep that in mind.

This book's goal is not to say what's good or bad but just to tell us what some of these things are and show us great photos.

From there, of course, I suggest further searching beyond just this book.

DAIRY? What to think? What to LEARN? There may be no clear answer for every person.

Most good cheese does not contain lactose; yet casein may still be a factor.

See ALL the links here. It's more a review of various views - always good when learning.

With diary - it may work well for some and not at all for others. Still, others may not know until they step away from it for a few weeks and then slowly add it back in.

If there is any indication of stuffy nose, phlegm, inflammation, brain fog, pain or fatigue . . . probably not a good idea. Yet, different kids of cheeses and goat / sheep sources might be fine.

Also, at times of colds or flu, it's likely a good time even for those who usually do well with it to avoid.

When seeking out cheese, a good idea to find pastured animals - check out the very ranches / farms they inhabit and the practices of the cheese making places. GRASS FED / Pastured animals matter to me.

Be certain of all ingredients; always avoid fake cheeses made with any vegetables oil. See the Teicholz book at end for how vegetables oil can cause so much damage in our bodies.

Be sure to read down the thread for a wide range of views:

Sidebar: When a lifetime of suffering, medical visits and prescription drugs can be resolved with a not especially challenging dietary change, a certain amount of retroactive frustration seems justifiable.

Not surprisingly, experiences like mine with dairy, outlined in my column of two weeks ago, are more common than unusual, at least according to the roughly 1,300 comments and e-mails we received since then.

In them, people outlined their experiences with dairy and health problems as varied as heartburn, migraines, irritable bowel syndrome, colitis, eczema, acne, hives, asthma (``When I gave up dairy, my asthma went away completely''),

Is Beef Jerky Rocket Fuel?

Metaphorically, of course. Seems to be. And if in BiPolar / Mania for others who are sensitive might also experience what I call, the rocket-fuel effect with anxiety, energy that is zooming all over the place.

NITRATES might derail, even crash; PROBIOTICS might help keep train on track, so to speak..

The Frightening Link Between Beef Jerky and Bipolar Mania

In humans and rats, eating cured meats might induce manic episodes.

By Olga Khazan - The Atlantic - July 19, 2018

Excerpt:

. . . They found the same difference when they compared rats that were given jerky with rats that were given a special, nitrate-free meat.

The nitrate-free-meat rats? Normal. The beef-jerky rats? Extremely hyper.

Yolken and his team then looked inside the brains and guts of the rats. Their brains exhibited gene and molecular-pathway changes that are similar to the kind seen in people with bipolar disorder. What’s more, the manic rats, the ones with nitrate in their diet, had different kinds of bacteria living in their guts than the control rats did.

The researchers don’t know exactly why the nitrates had this effect. Nitrates have antibacterial properties, and Yolken thinks the preservative might have been altering the microbiomes of the rats and the humans.

In past research, he and his colleagues found that when people who were hospitalized for a manic episode were given probiotics, they were less likely to be rehospitalized in the next six months. . . .
