The independent Member of the House of Lords, the Countess of Mar, has shown outstanding bravery in becoming the first parliamentarian worldwide to address the following issue:

"Asked by The Countess of Mar

To ask Her Majesty's Government whether Lyme disease is still being studied at Porton Down for its potential as a biological weapon.[HL14898]

The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Ministry of Defence (Lord Astor of Hever):

Dstl (or its predecessor organisations) has not looked at the potential for Lyme disease to be used as a biological weapon and has never had a programme of research to evaluate either the causative bacteria or its potential as a weapon."

From Hansard, the official record of parliamentary discussions in Britain http://www.publications.parliament.uk/pa/ld201212/ldhansrd/text/120125w0001.htm#12012543000554

Our government's reply is disingenuous. Porton is not only the home of DSTL (science arm of the military) but also the "civilian" HPA, who do study Lyme as a bioweapon.

Very interesting - typical of the government to reply like that! Thanks for posting [Smile]

You're welcome.

I hope that those in the Lyme community who, up till now, were too frightened to discuss this issue in public, (which is after all the most fundamental reason why patients are being left to rot), will take inspiration from Lady Mar's courage in raising it in Parliament.

Lady Mar was runner up to be Speaker at the House of Lords a couple of years ago, a position of great honour. She is very well respected in Britain.

Why has an Iran doctor written a book on Lyme disease?
Do we have Iran as the enemy or not? Why are we thinking not to ask our governements is this a bioweapon? when already the possible enemy already has it in their knowledge?

It came into google alerts, which I've set my computer to do now, it gives anything with the words Lyme Disease and it arived with this link to a book and the doctor is a top man in the Iran biological terrorism defences:

http://www.intechopen.com/books/show/title/lyme-disease,

I googled him and I can see his PhD was on OspA vaccines

God in heaven, what is going on?

Dieter, this is very puzzling. Iran does not have a lyme problem and probably won't ever be much of a happy home for lyme ticks due to its dryness. So, why would they spend any time on it? Unless they have noticed how many of the American scientists (like Barbour) who write about lyme, mostly downplaying it, are also biowarfare experts too. Maybe Iran thinks we might use lyme as a weapon. This has never seemed very likely to me, but maybe they suspect it and therefore want to be prepared. Or they have watched lyme spread over the country since its discovery in Lyme, CT and think there is some connection with Plum Island. The spread of this disease has followed the pattern of other escapes from research facilities in the past. Not saying this means Plum Island intentionally produced a germ that could cause an epidemic, but it may look that way to outside biowarfare experts.

If you read more about this Iranian guy, you will see that he shows up at a lot of places where defense against biowarfare is discussed. Nobody is going to say that are studying these agents for offense. And this may really be defense research.

Hi all,

Ali Karami is an expert on Lyme and has written extensively in the peer-reviewed medical press on it. It was his PhD subject. He has also filed several Lyme-related gene sequences in the gene banks.

The quote below is from a report dated 2008 by the Centre for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) on weapons of mass destruction in Iran.

Please note that I am not commenting on the truth or otherwise of the assertion that Karami's centre works on microbial bombs. I'm not in a position to know. Karami is, however, undeniably a Borrelia expert. And Lyme borreliosis is a biowarfare issue, studied not just by Iranians but by our own military scientists in the West.

"Students are given foreign scholarships to study abroad and use western technology.

The Revolutionary Guards' Baqiyatollah Research Center, affiliated with the Guards' Baqitollah Hospital, is another Revolutionary Guard Baqiyatollah center which works on microbial bombs. Dr. Karami is the head of this center.

He's a member of the Guard Corps Imam Hussein University scientific staff and has been working on biological weapons for 18 years. He is also a member of the national body of Biological Weapons Disarmament Convention and travels to Geneva regularly.

The Revolutionary Guards Joint Command headquarters has started new activities dealing with microbial weaponry. Brigadier General Abroumand is heading the activities and organized them in different committees."

In my opinion, the western military scientists are not protecting anyone's "national security", nor fooling anyone but their own civilian medical profession and the public in their own countries.

I think it would be very encouraging for Lady Mar if Lyme patients wrote to thank her for her courage in raising this "taboo" issue, and moving things forward for us all...no matter what country we live in.

Her contact details:

On the UK Lyme charity site, Lyme Disease Action, there is a latest news item saying that from now on, all Western blots will be done at Porton Down
!!!

http://www.lymediseaseaction.org.uk/latest-news/all-change/

Porton Down used to be well known as the biological defence centre for the UK - it still is of course, but it is held in such awe and semi-secrecy that many people below the age of 30 have never heard of it.

The ELISA tests will be done in regional hospitals, and any positives will then be sent on to be confirmed at the Special Pathogens Reference Unit at Porton Down.

This must be a BSL4 section, because they do anthrax and other dangerous germs there.

Its like saying to Americans, we are going to send your Lyme tests to Plum Island.

A.
