Wondered if anyone knew how many times I would need to wash a sleeping bag to remove 'Repel' spray. I think the active ingredient is permathtin.

We no longer have the can, so I can't check the directions to see how long it lasts.

We no longer use the bag for camping, and it's a good one the kids can use for sleepovers etc. I just want to get the chemicals out of it.

Any advice about what kind of detergent to use would be helpful as well.

Thanks.

I think I remember reading that it lasts through 3 washings.

It is recommended to retreat clothing that has been sprayed with permethrin every 6 weeks to keep the tick killing action effective.

It is also recommended to retreat your clothing after every 6 washings to be protected.

I do not have info on how many weeks/months, if ever, it takes for the chemicals to be totally removed from previously treated material.

Might be cheaper & easier to give the sleeping bags to a near-by animal shelter- being sure they know they were treated- and get new or used ones for the kids.

Just to let you know that permathtin is very deadly to fish....meaning when it's laundered the run off water gets into rivers and waterways and kills fish.

My can says it lasts for six washings.

Ok, thanks, six washings might ruin the sleeping bag...too bad, as it's a good one. Don't want to kill any fish anyway.

Thanks.

Yeah its around 6-8.

Permethrin is also bad for cats

So I probably shouldn't put it outside for my dogs to sleep on.
