I need a new one for both carpets and hard floors. The one I have now is self-propelled but still feels heavy and is hard to maneuver plus it sets off inflammation if I do too much at a time.
I was looking at the Shark Navigator Lift Away on QVC but one of the negative reviews pointed out that due to a short hose, it has to be carried around to do hardwood floors. I can lift 10 lbs but not for the duration needed to clean the floor.

hoover has a nice canister that's light.
mine is also too heavy. it's a sears progressive and it tears my neck and back up every time i use it.

My mom has an Oreck. It's really nice and light weight, less than 10lbs. I can pick it up and use it easily. It has greater suction than any other vacuum that I've used.
She has CFS so she needed something that worked well but required less exertion and didn't leave her in pain after using it. She's had it for at least 10yrs. These things last forever!

There are professional mold vacuums available - I do not have the address where we can order them. They are better than the vacuums with just hepa filters.

Hi Granniela I tried a lot of things,like setting a shop vac outside and running a long hose into the house.The sump pump hose you buy for a sump pump will do the trick well.
Then at walmart I found a wonderful vacuume,light, and the hose comes off the bottom for tight places.It is an upright has big rollers,easy to roll,switches from carpet to floor with a turn of a knob. Arm and hammer alergen traping bags work really well with it.
It is a (Bissell Powerforce) cost like 50 bucks is all.
Moms sears weighs twice as much.

Hadn't even thought about a canister, thanks for bringing it up. Now I'm trying to figure out if an upright or a canister style would be better. Maddog says big rollers are easy to roll. Need a showroom and lots of extra energy to try the difference...
I saw an Oreck at Costco today that weighed only 7.7 pounds--will look up the reviews on it and for Bissell, too. And then to Google mold vacuums, didn't even know they had such a thing.

might warn ya, i've priced commercial vacs and they're super expensive.
yep, every time i vacuum, my neck and back go out. i ate that puppy but it was so expensive i've kept it, even tho it's years old. i'm about due for a new one.
my sister has the upright canister that you empty and she likes it. might want to go to wally world and look at those.
have you tried one of those reconditioning stores that sell rebuilt vacs? there's one near us, but they have high end like rainbow and kirby so they're expensive too. but they might have other brands.

One problem with the long sump pump hose.
Remember the hoses that kids can twrill arround and they make neat noises!!
The sump pump hose with vacuume going through is very noisy,like make the dog howl noisy!!!

I have a Miele Olympus... I don't remember the model#. I bought it after we had a problem with mold and had to throw out our old vacuum. I liked that it had 3 HEPA filters and it is quite light... does floors and rugs with the flip of a button.

I have a great vacuum cleaner..
He's 6'1" 165 lbs. All I gotta do is say "it's time" and he's on it.
He gets behind our Sears canister vac (noisy) and I hide in another room until it's over.
Works great for me and I'm not wore out afterward.

I have a Miele Canister. Just bought it last year. VERY quiet and has a ton of filters inside (Hepa, etc.)I love it. Prior to that I had a Electrolux for almost 30 years!

I think one of the most important features of a good vacuum is the filter bag. It need to be a hela filter bag which doesn't release dirt, dust and toxic matter back into the air.

KY Woman, I tried that kind of vacuum cleaner but the last two times the hardware ended up in the repair shop so I decided it wasn't cost effective!
Glad to see you all were having a good laugh while I was out shopping. Ended up with a 7.7 pound Oreck that feels soooooo much easier to maneuver on the floors.
And it came bundled with a portable hand vacuum that can be strapped around my waist instead of over my shoulders. I used it on the upholstry once assembled and it's so much easier than lugging out the heavy Hoover.
Pam, both of them have Hepa filters. The upright is a Hepa bag system that is supposed to seal when removed so no cloud of allergens when changing bags. It'll be awhile before I vacuum enough to need to change but it sound good in theory.
I'm really glad not to have to figure out where to store one of those really long hoses Maddog mentioned.

I have a dyson air muscle animal it is a bit heavier than some but I have pets and the suction on it is amazing , I think it cleans the house really well

I have central vac. Ho Hum. It's good in a way b/c the dust gets caught in a canister in the basement. It's bad b/c the dust gets caught in a canister in the basement lol. Central vac power isn't good at all.

- MIELE is the only one to consider if you want to hear for the rest of your life.
Miele also has excellent HEPA filters.
All other brands literally can destroy hearing, even with hearing protection - which is absolutely vital for ALL within ear shot to employ when a vacuum is turned on.
Ear plugs AND decibel rated muffs for whoever runs the vacuum.
With a MIELE, though, the decibel level is safe, though still good to wear protection anyway.
The difference is that hearing protection is still not enough with other vacuums - as long as you breath, the ears are still getting hit as sound travels also through bone and through the nose.
MIELE may cost more but how much is your hearing worth? Your balance?
MIELE is the ONLY one that even tests for their decibel level or has considered noise attenuation.
HAIR DRYERS - ear plugs are vital, too.
BLENDERS, food processors, wear ear plugs or dB rated muffs - anyone in the room. -

I love my Shark. Not sure what the model is but got it at Sears couple years ago. I like that there is no filters or bags. Really light and easy to use. I think they sell them everywhere now.

BTW, when dealing with a toxic infection such as lyme - and
when on antibiotics (and other drugs that can be ototoxic), ears can be damaged at lower decibel levels than the usual 85 dB for 90 seconds to damage ear nerves (though it may not show for awhile).

i was happy with orecks for a long time...especially their lightness. i abused mine-it was old but still working well when i came to this moldy house.
my son gave me an electrolux ergorapido 2 in 1 cordless...its pretty neat. light. dont have to wrestle with cord. has a hand held thingy too. and no bags. i like it for quickies between major cleaning...and with it i really stretch out the major cleaning
then i bought a eureka pet lover mitey mite and so far i really like it-it has hepa filter and is big enough for me in my space-mostly wood, vinyl and thin rugs...it is light-looks kinda cheap and plastic-y...but i need light these days and i thin it was only 100. online no shipping

Keebler, good info/links re: noise. Luckily noises from vacuums and blow dryers don't bother me. Noises from annoying people in my life, like their voices do however. LOL

My oldest would run for the hills whenever she saw me take out the vacuum or blender from the time she was a toddler.
We got to the point where she had to be in her room with her hands covering her ears before I could rev up any appliance!
I think she just didn't like that type of noise.

- It can be much more serious than "just not liking that kind of noise" as severe hyperacusis like that is terribly painful, and can be actually degrees sickening, even causing various levels of seizures (though some may not be visible to others).
So much torture can come from sound & vibration that some are driven to even end their own lives. I've been very close many times due to noise and vibration. It sure helps now that I understand the physiological reasons but it's still sheer hell.
Those with lyme (and those on antibiotics) are much more at risk of developing all kinds of hearing disorders so that is why it's vital to always protect ears from anything over 85 decibles. A hairdryer is about 100 decibels.
