I got a puppy Sunday and I can't decide on a name. His mother is American Mastiff and his father is Lab/Husky. He is black with a white stripe on his chest, four white socks (small) and blue eyes. The vet says he will probably grow up to be about 80 pounds.

ANY IDEAS?

I am trying to decide on a two syllable name that can be shortened to one syllable. These are names I have thought of.

Radar (what we are trying out today)
TYE because of the stripe on his chest (yesterday's try out name)
Blu the day before because of his eyes
Tux because of his markings

Ruffian (too long and Ruff or Ruffy seems like a little dogs name)
Baron
Stryder

Gus (friends idea)
Bluzie
Buddy (one of the most popular dog names)

I have got to decide! By the way this little guy is a lot of work!

Here are a few of my favorites:

Dusty
Jake
Zeus
Tucker
Socks- because he has white socks

It might just take time to name him based on his personality. Have fun with your puppy, he is going to be a big boy when he grows up.

how about Ranger? Milo? Milo was my dog who had white markings on black and looked like he was wearing a tux with a black vest. No kidding!

Frankie?

I'm thinking about Frank Sinatra, 'Ol Blue Eyes, and the tuxedo he always wore.

I always name my animals after songs...

Maggie May
Rod Stewart

Kashmir
Led Zeppelin

what is your favorite song?

PS. I am happy for you - dogs are great company and best friends....

Think of how the name will sound when shouted out -- and how easy it is to say.

But also how distinct the first & last syllable will be for the dog's ears. Will it demand a response or sound like a song?

Will the name be carried away in the wind or will it cut through any traffic or leaf rustle so your dog knows to come to you (if off leash)?

If you live in the country, how far will that shouted name carry across fields? (But I'd have a whistle system in that case.)

Even certain numbers are just easier than others to say. My phone number has some of the harder numbers to say out loud. I am very aware of just how hard it is to talk, so do be sure you think of that, too.

Some words just take so much more energy than others to have the sound carry, it's not just the mechanics of the mouth but that should be considered, too, as you will be saying that name a lot for many years.

After those considerations, a strong AND cute name is just so grand, of course. Likely, a "formal" name but then a shorter nick name will come about.

Some really good ideas for names here. If possible, a photo would be fun to see. I'm hoping that something in his character will soon make the name choice to be very clear.

I love all the names mentioned. Oreo is really adorable and he looks like one but I tried it and found I was shortening it to OR. There are some other ones I really like too like Ace, Baxter, Zeppelin and Jake. Those are impressive big dog names and I am not sure if we should go with cute or impressive. He looks so cute now, it is hard to imagine him being a big dog. My husband liked socks so we tried that. We have a cat with blue eyes named Frankie.

I like Milo. I like the name Marley but I am afraid he would take after the dog in the movie. Now I am trying out "Chewie". He is like a little piranha.

You are so right Keebler. The last dog we had was named Buck and when he ran off we would be screaming BUCK! BUCK! One day my daughter said, "Mom do you know how that can be misinterpreted?"

You don't want a name that can be confused with a command or that sounds like someone else's name in the family.

I read you will say the name at least 35,000 times (probably more) so it does need to roll off the tongue.

I don't know why this is so hard.

". . . don't want a name that can be confused with a command or that sounds like someone else's name in the family." (end quote)

or the same name as a neighbor's dog - or a neighbor - I can see how that could play out !

Bosco just came to mind. Not much chance of a neighbor ever being named Bosco!

So, I have only had one dog of my own and a few cats so I could not come up with many:

Jojo
Vito
Baxter
Magnum
Riley
Oliver (Ollie for short)

Posted by nefferdun (Member # 20157) on :

I love all the names. That is the problem. Right now I am calling him Jasper - Jazz for short.

Oliver is really cute and Ollie is a good abbreviation. A lot of people like Baxter and Ace. A friend of mine has a grandson named - can't spell it but - Ace a.

I also thought of Zane but don't like Zaney.
Wilson is a great name too but we have a cat named Wilber (kind of close). Like Riley, Jake and Milo a lot. That is what makes this so hard.

I found out he is called a Mastador - a goofy mix like the Labradoodle. I am afraid he is going to be very big. The vet said 80 pounds so I hope he is not bigger than that. Big dogs do not live as long as smaller ones.

Jasper is cute!!

If you still can't decide, pick 3 and put the names in a jar.

Posted by Dove7 (Member # 39546) on :

Chewbacca (I realize it's three syllables, but...
Scooby
Scrubby
Elvis (just think, you could say, "Elvis has left the building!)
Karma
Shaggy
Jughead
Muggles

Enjoy your new family member!

Your puppy sounds very handsome. I have a jasper. (Jas for short.. Or jazzy) I also have a mostly black dog with a white chest and paws we named Cash... The dog in black. Have fun with your new pupster.

Posted by nefferdun (Member # 20157) on :

We tried Chewie (short for Chewbacca) for a few hours. It sure fit as he is like a little shark.

Still Jasper this morning. He is very cute and affectionate so maybe that one will stick. He is doing very well with his potty training. Amazing little guy as he really tries hard to do the right thing so even if he can't hold it long enough to get my attention to let him out, he will go right in front of the door.

Randibear, I am sorry you lost your big dog. We had a half newfoundland half lab that was 120 pounds. He lived to be 15! We also had a half lab, half husky that lived to 15. That is why I was so attracted to this puppy - looked just like them.

Posted by linky123 (Member # 19974) on :

Sounds like he is smart too.

Posted by nefferdun (Member # 20157) on :

I think he is very smart, but I am his "mother" so I am prejudiced. He does not bark much either, which is nice. From what I have read, Mastiff's are very calm dogs - devoted to family. They just want to be near you. He likes to sleep with his head on our feet.

Another name I thought of: Mudge, from the children's book, "Henry and Mudge". I think Mudge was a mastiff.

Posted by OtterJ (Member # 30701) on :

Explain to me why dogs sleep crosswise in the bed so they take up plenty of room?Never lengthwise but just about your behind area they decide to stretch out horizontally so you can't move and you have to carefully turn over so as not to wake the sleeping baby.

Funny Otter (Like your name too)! I can't sleep with dogs any more just for that reason.

Mudge is good - so many good names.

One whole day of Jasper with Jazz as the shortened version.

Posted by randibear (Member # 11290) on :

randi slept stretched out full length between us with her head on the pillow!!

when she got too old to get in the bed, we made a bed on the floor with pillows for her head. she slept on two heavy blankets, just like a people bed.

she was a little spoiled....

Posted by nefferdun (Member # 20157) on :

People who "spoil" their dogs are my kind of people.

I guess he is Jasper. Yesterday he was whining to get outside - what a good boy! I am so proud of him.

I have a horrible cold and just want to stay in bed but not with this baby to take care of.

Posted by faithful777 (Member # 22872) on :

If he is going to be huge, how about "magnum" or "Duke"?

Posted by randibear (Member # 11290) on :

Ranger is good
Major
Cody

Posted by Kudzuslipper (Member # 31915) on :

Yay Jasper. Sorry you have a cold Neffer.

We call our Jasper Jazz. Jazzy, Puppydoo, Buddy (someone told me I'd didn't matter what you named your male dog, you were gonna call him buddy as an endearment anyway...he was right) baby coo coo, and Jasperrudy. It's amazing how quickly these little guys wrap you around their little paws.

I like Jasper!

Our border collie was not allowed on our bed... unless you counted the times during lightning storms would he would be nearly on top of me wanting to crawl up by my face!

He had a little bed in the corner with a little pillow. When our maid would come she would "make" his bed! It was so cute how she doted on him too!

Jasper is lucky to have a human parent like you.

Gonna brag here. Our two golden retrievers know the four-letter F-word.......when they hear the word "food" they come running no matter where they are!

Goldens love each family member individually. As I got sicker, our two would bring me one of their blankets (ick), a toy, a clean sock out of the laundry basket. Their eyes look deeply into mine with full trust, love, and acceptance.

Enjoy your puppy!

Being a dog lover, this post caught my eye.....

We are the proud dog parents of a 110 lb, 11 y.o. black lab that my hubs named Rocky.

We found him on church property where the hubs was cutting grass. Someone had dropped off (3) 4 month old black lab puppies hoping someone would take care of them. We only found the one. One didn't survive and the 3rd I never found.

Needless to say the plan was to keep him until someone claimed him. So we waited and waited.

Here we are 11 years later and I thank God that nobody ever came looking.

Rocky was with me all through my diagnosis of Lyme and Co. and treatment. He's the best.

Now, he's not named after the character 'Rocky' played by Sylvester Stallone, even though that would be great.

While teething, our little bundle of 4-legged love chewed on 'rocks' all day long and buried them under the paved walkway.

Hence...Rocky.

I wanted to name him Rascal (Rasky) but the hubs won hands down with Rocky.

BTW, I like Jasper too.

[hi]

I was pretty sick with that cold but I am getting through it.

His name is Jasper - short version is Jazz. Kudzuslipper I elaborate on their names too and call all of them "Buddy" including my horses.

I don't know how to post a picture. But if you PM me I can give you my name and you can friend me on facebook and see him and other pictures. I just post pictures, nothing political and I am close to well so don't need to worry about getting in trouble over treatment.

I love the stores even more than the names. I had two cats that took care of me when I was really sick. Animals are wonderful.
