I just google for sites and have been watching a bit. So sad - I don't think anyone realized he was bipolar. When you look at his comedy, it can fit that frenetic creative energy style.

I know he belonged to the world, but he also lived here and was a part of our civic activities.

For example, he would often headline Comedy In The Park, our annual comedy day in Golden Gate Park in the late summer or early fall -

6 comics an hour at 10 minutes each, for several hours, with a different MC each hour, with a headliner in the end. Gave us a taste of which comics we might want to follow more. We sure walk out feeling pretty goofy for a little while!

One year, after being the last comic, he walked out of the park, and everyone followed him, like the pied piper, and I was there, near the front! He walked into a McDonald's in the Haight, with the crowd - you should have seen the staff's expressions! Like, what the...!

Then he proceeded to order, in an Indian accent, a vegetarian hamburger!!! "Dis I'd like, vedy, vedy much, if you hoppen to hov vegetadian homboga? Pleace? No? Pleace? Well, could you find vegetadian homboga for me, pleace? No?" Etc. This occurred prior to veggie burgers being on fast food menus.

I think it was easy to see that he was bipolar. And many who are bipolar will do drugs to try to feel better. It's a very tragic condition for so many.

I feel so badly for his family and especially his children. So so difficult.

Did you see the video where he explains the game of golf?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=okkhgZim5Ig

Posted by Robin123 (Member # 9197) on :

No, I haven'r seen the golf one. He medicated with alcohol and drugs, both of which were then a lifelong problem.

I saw one where he was hawking papers in front of his own show as people were walking in to it! And no one realized it! He was dressed as a newshawker, with a work uniform and hat pulled back, and calling out like a hawker.

Then the film shows him going in the place, actually near me - the Great American Music Hall - as a newshawker in the wings until announced, then quickly taking off that outer shirt and bounding on stage.

I loved him doing the genie. hysterical.

we all have our demons. I was truly saddened by this. he had such talent.

we can never know what goes on in another's life.

and then lauren bacall too...

Yes, very sad. As we all know, all the money and fame in the world can't quell inner pain. Yes, the idea of a bi-polar person doing cocaine----yikes! Adding fuel to the fire. But, yes, people self-medicate when nothing else is working. Uppers and downers (cocaine and alcohol).

apparently, he had a very lonely and sad childhood. This stuff doesn't come from a happy childhood (duh!).

On top of that, it makes me wonder----did he also have TBD's, considering that he lived in Marin county? Who knows?

Yes, his mania was very evident. But what a talent and what a good soul he apparently was (he did a lot of benefits, etc., freely admitted his challenges---at least some of the time.

Posted by Robin123 (Member # 9197) on :

Rumigirl, I considered the idea of TBDs too, but I've never heard of indications of any other possible symptoms, just bipolar.

I am SO over posts about him. Enough already!

He had access to the best of the best - therapists, docs, spas, retreats, vacations.

He was well for long periods of time. He had a wife and 3 kids and he surely was very aware of his family and all that was available to him.

His act IMO was selfish. I got a lot of grief when I posted that on my FB page. Whatever. That's my opinion.

I wish I had the time/energy/mindset to fall into a depression. I don't have that luxury. And honestly, I am not of that mindset that would allow me to go there.

I have to take care of sick kids and sick me. I have to maintain my household. If I don't NO ONE ELSE will.

I know depression can be a real condition. But honestly speaking, there are so many who rely on and use "DEPRESSION" as a crutch to the point it becomes their identity.

I understand, Beaches - so many of us have big struggles and we're trying to survive, and that viewpoint came out early on, and even I said wait a minute, a wife, three kids, a wonderful home, money, a huge life, why?

But maybe we can't judge what's inside of someone. Maybe he really lost it due to physical depression, and I'm going to call it physical, not just mental.

At this point, we still will not know how much was attitudinal and how much was an actual brain illness. Maybe he tried to cover up a physical condition all his life with comedy, alcohol and drugs, and finally felt he couldn't handle it anymore. He had put himself in rehab again just prior to this.

Anyway, here's another pretty amazing tribute I just watched -
www.koko.org/koko-tribute-robin-williams

And thanks for the golf one, Lymetoo - I remember that when I went to Scotland, the feeling of needing subtitles for what they were saying! Had to ask for translations!

Beaches, I’m so sorry you feel this way but, many of us don’t.

If you don’t care to follow our post on Robin then just don’t open it.

I have a family, wife, kids, grandkids etc. I suffered like millions of others with depression for years, still do once and a while.

I thought of taking my life more than once when I couldn’t control the depression, pills don’t always cut it.

Do you really think this was his goal in life – (drugs, alcohol & death)?

You also mentioned he had access to the best medical care, he did but, when depression takes over our brain; we have no control or judgment, and all the money in world can’t fix it.

It’s kind of like Lyme Disease, if you don’t suffer from it, you can’t understand it.

I wish you the best, and I hope you never have to truly understand how bad depression can be.

Just read he had early onset of Parkinsons according to his wife.

From what I have read Parkinson's can be misdx too.

Some are helped by the meds and some are not.

But, back from the break to find more laughs brought to us by RW

Anyone who has suffered from depression knows that sometimes all the love and support cannot reach you.

Sometimes the treatment can actually send you over the edge rather than help. Sometimes existing is simply not an option, the pain is too great.

I feel sad that he is gone and more sad about how much he was suffering. I believe he was(is) a kind and sensitive soul and hope he is free of all pain now.

Ha - just announced - early development of Parkinson's.

I had a chat with my LLMD - he said there's many causes of Parkinson's, one of which is Lyme.

We recently had a friend of mine tested for Lyme who was a Parkinson's patient and she tested positive for Lyme.

LymeXtu, glad you enjoyed the gorilla encounter - I did too!

Bipolar AND Parkinsons? Isn't that a bit much to swallow? Infection often causes depression. I am now very suspicious about his previous diagnoses.

People who are sick and getting no help for the cause may self medicate with drugs and alcohol. My cousin's husband who lived in a very lyme endemic area, and had symptoms that sounded tickborne to me, was using a lot of alcohol. He died suddenly and I doubt if anyone ever suspected lyme et al. I had not seen him for years or my cousin and only heard some of the symptoms after his death.

Unless you walk in some one elses shoes there should be no judgement. When I was in my 20's I was dx with depression and given antidepressant meds.

The emotional pain was so excruciating that feeling physical pain (brought relief) It was unbearable and it made me suicidal even though I wanted to live desperately.

Looking back, I now know it was the meds that made me suicidal. Just read that Robin was dx with early Parkinsons and was sleeping 18 hr days. I also suspected Lyme because of the area he lives in.

There has to be more awareness of this dreadful disease. Wonder what kind of reaction would occur if a bunch of people posted the possible Lyme connection on Facebook??? RIP dear sweet soul Robin.

This is so sad if it's turning out to be Lyme. The word is not getting out that Parkinon's can be Lyme.

Perhaps he saw it as too much of a confront to his physical and mental prowess to have to deal with Parkinson's.

Am with you, Gael, on the idea of making a little public noise about that possibility.

Randibear, nice time to post the John Donne poem...

Not just yet, for noise making, though, I hope. We need to let his family have as much peace as possible and some time for some grieving.

And, rather than making "noise" after anyone's death, easier for all might be quiet caring conversations from their friends, any who might be LL and know how to approach this im a dignified manner that will not be painful

but maybe just to help open some more doors to possible factors - and better education, then, for everyone for prevention. The family does care about that.

A conversation should precede any public speculation, though. If he maybe had a bulls eye rash, or lyme symptoms, etc. Family would know but to speculate can make the lyme community look a little eager to those who don't understand WHY we wonder about a possible connection.

I just worry that family and close friends are so bombarded during times like this.

I can't help but notice, though, two of his movies: Patch Adams & Awakenings - both gave him insights into different ways to look at illness and searching for options.

He worked with a great neurologist, the author of the book for Awakenings (Oliver Sacks) . . . he had some knowledge of not being fooled by the customary ways of doing things - or settling for the first answers that came along.

And, yet, no one knows that he didn't seek out all options, all information. He may have yet had his own reasons and various factors. In the end, even if he felt he just couldn't go on . . . knowing that he experienced love and appreciation and apparently was generous with that for his friends and others . . . that really does matter.

Well said Keebler and very thoughtful. I agree with what you are saying. It's so scary that people are succumbing to this disease in a way that is not spoken about. That's why it's called the "The Silent Epidemic"

Perhaps it can be presented down the road in a way that would be productive and not painful to his loved ones. Hopefully it won't be swept under the rug as it is so often.

Gael

Gael,

Good point. And, believe me, I don't want this to be a "The Silent Epidemic" any longer. It's just that I hope for the very best, respectful, ways to start any kind of conversation about possible lyme with a family after a tragedy.

I also wondered if Robin contacted Michael J. Fox. While some here may wonder if Fox' previous history with and short treatment of lyme is connected in his case, that's another possible puzzle piece, but figured it's worth a mention.

Yet, Fox has taken another direction and is achieving some pretty remarkable benchmarks.

Just say that Fox had not been aware of this. He tweeted that Robin knew of Fox' foundation long ago, etc.:

"Stunned to learn Robin had PD. Pretty sure his support for our Fdn predated his diagnosis. A true friend; I wish him peace." (end MJF quote)

I'm sure this new insight brings a poignant sadness to MJF. Bless his heart, too, for all his efforts to help others. He may be on a different path (than we here on this board) yet the things he and his teams are working on could hold some keys for relief for many, across diagnoses.

I just wrote a brief paragraph on lots of social media sites that broke the news about his Parkinson's diagnosis. We cannot know at all whether he had Lyme disease - that's only one of several ways that people can get Parkinson's. As I read through comments, lots of people mentioned they know others with Parkinson's. So I brought up the subject this way:

Sometimes Parkinson's can be Lyme disease, a bacterial infection that gets into the brain and causes havoc. It's usually transmitted by infected ticks and Marin County is 5-10% tick-infected. People can be tested for Lyme disease which can be treated by Lyme-literate doctors. For doctor referrals, see www.lymenet.org, Seeking A Doctor section.

If any of you are so moved to make comments on social media, it would be a good idea since it's news right now and so many people are saying they know someone with it.

Btw, a friend with Parkinson's recently tested for Lyme disease at my request, and she was positive for it and is now being treated by a Lyme doctor, so hopefully I saved her life.

Whatever the cause of his depression (Parkinsons -which can be caused by lyme, or some other malfunction in his nervous system), the type of depression he had was clinical. And that type of depression is not changed by changing your thoughts or how much people love you.

It is chemical. He may have needed LOTS of fish oil, which in large dosages repairs the nervous system and has brought many suicidal people and bi-polar people back to the world. I'm sure none of the experts mentioned that to him.

He may have had lyme. Maybe not.

But so many of the meds for serious depression can just make a person feel worse because of the side effects.

My heart goes out to him. I love him and will miss him.

We had our annual Comedy in the Park (Golden Gate Park) day today (6 comics an hour for 6 hours!) and it was dedicated to Robin Williams. His picture hung on the platform wall behind the comics, titled A Loving Tribute.

I've never seen the comics so touched and so moved as today. They all knew him well, and told many stories of his befriending them, supporting them, "saving their life," just all-around always there for them.

One said in the days before the internet, word would just get around on the street that he had come to a comedy club and everyone went running down the street to get in to see him.

Another remarked that he never set up his jokes - they were just always spontaneous. I think that was also because he was a great actor and just went instantly into character.

I think his generosity and his capacity to infuse any place he was in with laughter and humanity is very inspiring.
