I was making some french fries for my lunch today started the timer for 20 minutes, then promptly and unknowingly fell asleep in my chair.

The phone woke me up about 1.5 hours late!

The fries were blackened all the way through and crumbled in my fingers like used charcoal.

The screen door was open and so the smoke detector may have never gone off. It didn't go off when I opened the oven and a plume of black smoke billowed out.

Scary!

I guess I am not allowed to cook anything the first week of being back on antibiotics. [Frown]

Anyone else have something like this happen to them?

I'm surprised ovens don't have an automatic timer built in when they will turn off.

But, oh, wait . . . some do, or did. My mother had one (made in the late '60's) that you could set to turn on and off at a certain time on a preset temperature.

That feature on both stovetops and ovens would be very nice for some of us (and many others, too). My current oven does not have that.

I can't "do" any kind of timer or alarm at all (due to "rocket to the moon" syndrome) but maybe you could get a smaller portable timer or set an alarm clock right near where you might do any future unplanned dozing while cooking.

I think you need to check your smoke alarm! I see what you mean about the open door... but you need some kind of back up!

Yes, check smoke alarm for sure!

Yes, this happens to me when I run a bath. If I leave the bathroom, I often forget the tap is on.

Sometimes I turn the oven off but forget to take the food out. So it dries out and sits in there until I smell it a few days later.

Scatterbrained...

We should have a scatter brain what did you do. At least we can laugh and cry at ourselves.

When I was sick, I put the shampoo in the refrigerator. The next day I didn't know what happened to it. Used my wifes for a couple of days till I noticed it. Was I perplexed ! Who would put shampoo in the refrigerator, took some time for it to dawn on me what happened.

I put an artichoke in a pan with water on the stove and wandered away. I was upstairs and suddenly smelled burning food.
Remembered and ran down to the kitchen....one cooked well artichoke!
Scared me good....

I've burnt artichokes before too, several times actually. I guess I shouldn't leave the kitchen when I'm herxing.
