I am in need of a new mattress and box springs.

I don't really want a memory foam type of mattress.

I have the typical coil mattress where the mattress and box springs are about 14 inches in height.

I am not rich--LOL

I like a medium firm mattress.

Any suggestions as to brands?

Last time we went through this, we looked a lot at organic, but couldn't find one that we quite felt good about. (I don't remember all the reasons now.)

We did want something without metal, such as coils, and ended up getting a mattress sold to go with a futon. They are foam, but I do not think they are memory foam.

I don't know if they are the healthiest, but they are relatively inexpensive. They don't hold shape too well, so I do think we'll be replacing much sooner than with mattress with coil.

Can't believe I am agreeing with Maddog (hehehe), but I vote water bed too! Consider the semi- waveless kind, as he said!

I've been looking at mattresses for a while. Trying to stay as non toxic as possible, but it gets pricey. Latex comes up a lot.

One with a wool cover:

Coil mattress:

These might be similar to the memory foam you are trying to avoid, but some are customizeable for firmness. Seems like it's almost impossible to get away from the "CertiPur" foam as a bedding component unless without getting in to really pricey mattresses. CertiPur is still polyurethane foam and not really nontoxic.

I've seen some people say they just buy a few pieces of latex stacked together inside of a cover and use as a mattress.

I think there are a lot of good ideas in here:

I would look into natural, organic ones - much healthier. They aren't cheap, but in my opinion well worth the investment. You can look into clearance ones on the following websites:

Here are some natural bedding links:

This one seems to be the cheapest. They are located in IL.

These companies listed below are more expensive:

www.GoodnightNaturals.com/natural-mattresses.html

www.thenaturalsleepstore.com

Note: I am in no way associated with any of these businesses. Just trying to help as always (and looking into getting one for us as well)!
