Guys, don't forget about the coin in the freezer trick. Freeze ice cube then place coin on top and re-freeze. If you come back and coin is at the bottom you know your power was off a long time and food not safe to eat.
Other hints:
Suggestions for your Harvey prep besides all the obvious things you should do: ✅make a pot of coffee today and put in thermos. No thermos, put in your Artic cup, it will be hot tomorrow. No artic, put in refrigerator.
Cold coffee is better than no coffee. ✅Order pizzas today or cook some frozen pizzas. Put in fridge. Cold pizza is good. ✅Keep emptying your ice maker and put in freezer bags in the freezer. ✅Fill every plastic pitcher you have and put in fridge.
Don't try to find bottled water. ✅Wash and dry all your dirty clothes. Make sure all dishes have been washed. Why? Gives me peace of mind since I am OCD about things undone.
💜🙏🏻Stay safe friends, look out for neighbors, especially the elderly and widows/single ladies. God is in control of all things including this storm.
If you have bottled water, freeze some of them!

Adding our prayers too,we have friends and family in Louisiana, Texas, Mississippi, and Alabama.
These severe Hurricane storms can be very dangerous because of high winds, tornadoes, flooding and so on. Even if they are downgraded , we don't forget some storms we went thru in Louisiana.
Listen to the warnings, and get out if you're warned to,please. As we all know, things can mostly be replaced, people cannot.
And be aware,even if not in the direct path of the storm, heavy rains,and high winds can still hit in other areas a ways from the main storm areas.
There is some very good advice here, also, if it wasn't posted, if you can get important meds', paperwork, pass ports etc. and hopefully some pictures to safety.
That will help too, especially after the storm when trying to clean up everything. Knowing where important,and sometimes highly sentimental items are can help.
Can't help but think about pets,as well as people during these storms. Please stay safe,y'all. Keeping the danger areas in prayer

NICE ideas. I'll add the ice cube trick to the hurricane list. Have the coffee idea already- amazed I thought of that and don't even drink it. HA!
I've suggested (on the list) that you fill a cooler with ice and all of your fridge items that will go bad in a couple of days. That way you can eat out of it first, then open up fridge later, only if needed, so you won't lose the cold in there early on.

I did have the suggestions you made already on the list, including detailed instructions on pets- almost as much info for them as I had for children!

When we toured it they showed how it was built. One thing they did was use crushed sea shells as insulation between the floors and in the walls. It must work well!

Heard from my nephew who lives in Houston with his wife. The 2 of them, plus 2 dogs, plus the U of H football team evacuated to Austin. (He does PR for U of H sports teams).
But then they had to be on the run further, as Austin was going to be hit (this was Friday night). He said for sure their house would be gone in the storm. But they do have flood insurance.

My brother has so far escaped. He texted me late last night to say that the water was one inch from coming into his house.
I was really upset and began praying even harder for them. I texted my cousin to do the same and she did.
Well .. today he has tallied 21 inches of rain (since Friday) and his house is still DRY! That is an out and out miracle.
His house has flooded twice before and I was very concerned because it flooded in April of 2016. Soon after that my sister in law was dxd with esophageal cancer. It took months of stress and hard work to put their house back in order.
My SIL just had her 6 month check up a few weeks ago and is still cancer free. So I really wanted them to be free of another worry.
Go God!
Now ... I still have friends who are experiencing flooding there and a niece who got flooded out. It's bad there. I just can't believe how bad it is.
My father in law has Alzheimer's and he's in a facility in Corpus Christi. They did OK there, thank goodness.

Everyone has to make their own decisions on whether or not to leave. Those storms are not that predictable. They got it right this time for the most part, but I've left during a hurricane only to end up in heavy traffic for hours.
Then when we arrived at our destination there were tornadoes!! Meanwhile, our home sat boarded up and in great shape since the storm went east.
All good.. but it teaches you that leaving is not always the best thing to do.

The Mayor thinks that because there were previous problems evacuating- and serious problems they were- that the solution is to just tell everyone to stay.
WRONG!
The SOLUTION is to plan better at the government level, educate the public, make detailed solid plans and get people out of there before it hits, not during the storm or at the last minute.
NOTHING is more important than the lives of the people. Nothing. No excuses.
A policeman with a family lost his life trying to get to work to help rescue those who stayed behind! THAT SHOULDN'T HAPPEN!

No money?
Skip a fancy cup of coffee 2 x a month and there is some money.
Don't buy another new pair of shoes, that saves more.
No new tattoo till you have a disaster plan in place and functioning.
No time?
Skip a soccer season and all the gas it takes to get to practices and games for those 6 year old children.
I'm sure if they had a say in it children would rather feel safe and be alive than play soccer for one season.
Cut out 2 hours of TV watching a month. That's 24 hours (a year) to prepare and make plans.
Put down the cell phones and take 15 minutes to 1/2 hour each day to work on plans till you are ready and prepared.
No excuses.

Sorry, I must disagree. And so will many other families that have suffered losses as a result who thought staying was an ok thing to do.
Hoping to get "lucky" is not the way to approach a pending disaster.
If it was, and luck was always positive, no one would have died and no one else would have to risk their lives to help those who didn't leave.

Over 25,000 people have had to be rescued so far and there will be many more to come. They can’t get to them all and those people are hurting.
That’s 25,000 people who could have left. Had they, this wouldn’t require others risking the lives...
Of 24 thousand National Guard members, the staff on 2 Navy warships, the Coast Guard, 700 Marines, FEMA employees, countless Red Cross, Salvation Army and other organization members, just to name a few.
Local police, 911 operators, rescue squads & fire department members, and all of their families could be safe and together somewhere else. They could have rested and come back fresh to start with the clean up, had people left.
State and National government employees, hospital employees- both local and from other states- are forced to stay there to care for those injured who could have left.
Those caring for the rescued, those feeding the rescued, those transporting the rescued- ALL wouldn’t have to be there if people left like they are suppose to do.
Pets wouldn’t be stuck at home alone and in danger of dying in the flooding waters or starving had plans been made in advance.
Curfews wouldn’t have to be in place now. There wouldn’t be looting and a rise in crime if everyone left. Pregnant women wouldn’t be stuck in their homes, desperate and without medical care.
It is five days later and more people are being found dead and more are requiring rescuing.
This didn’t have to happen.

Hurricane Irma on its way!
PLEASE watch this tropical storm and while watching get yourself prepared and LEAVE before this hurricane gets close.
The Weather Channel just predicted it will become a "major hurricane" in the next few days, cat 3 at least.
Here is a detailed list to help you prepare, designed for all with Lyme and other patients in mind.
It is just south of Texas, in the middle to west side of the Gulf. It could form another hurricane in the next few days from the left overs from Harvey and a low pressure that is forming.

My heart goes out to everyone affected by the flooding in Texas. It is so scary to see the live coverage. I can't even begin to imagine what this must be like.
For anyone with tick borne illness, this is going to wreak havoc. Mold illness and more to contend with. My husband and I are going to make a small donation. Lyme has drained us, but this is the worst. Praying for all that are affected.

TC .. That's how Harvey started .. in the Gulf itself. Very unusual for one there to strengthen so quickly. It only took two days to be a huge storm.

You might suggest that there is most likely time to still register for a couple earth science, oceanic & atmospheric studies classes at their area college for this new term.
Some colleges allow area residents to audit such classes so they would not have to worry about actually passing a test. Life long learning is a wonderful thing.
NOVA, NOAA & National Geographic's websites would likely also have some really good documentaries that help explain what happens when hot air & water currents meet up with cooler ones and how jet streams work in general.
Even weather.com has some good educational clips. Tell them you are simply sharing your appreciation of how science works.

And from what I've noticed over the decades...
AFTER a disaster there are promises to fix things so it will be better "next time" and they will be more prepared.
And rarely, if ever, are these plans carried out to actually improve the situation.
For example, there should have been solid evacuation plans in place after the most recent horrors the public experienced and there weren't.
So they just figured last time was a bust, so next time we'll just tell everyone NOT to leave.

well I did get hysterical over husband's mom calling in a panic thinking we're going to be washed away. he told her we're about 300 miles from the coast. he said uh this is texas. and we live on a hill.
she jus kept on and on. he said she actually thought we were flooding.

So far family and friends in Texas are safe, I know there is a horrible amount of damage in so many areas there.
Keeping an eye out for the Irma storm,and Florida,a Grand-niece lives there.
Have to go back and read the list hints for pets, glad to know there's help for them too!
The weather is just plain odd, fires on much of the West Coast, Seattle over two months and no rain.
And 'course we are in Monsoon season in LV NV, every year folks have accidents,and some drown, because they don't pay attention to warnings on flooding and lightening.
Hopefully the storms will calm down and stop soon. We've been praying for those affected by the storms, and fires now too,so much danger this year.

my niece lives in delray beach. she left couple of days ago with her cat and is in charlotte with friends.
so sad about st maarten. we go every year and was there in march. poor st thomas.
think the next trip will be north...
makes you wonder about prophecy tho....

My brother has a home in Orlando, as does one of his sons. My nephew is staying in Orlando in his own home with his family. I think they are going to get hit pretty hard, but they do have cinder block walls and hurricane windows.
My brother is already in Richmond, VA with his other son.
I have so many friends in FL .. It's going to be such a nightmare for everyone.
