Happy Mother’s Day to all those who are mothers or act as mothers and mentors to others!

Join us this week as we encourage each other to exercise.

Are you planting flowers or vegetables, walking, spring cleaning? Any movement counts! [woohoo]

Have a great week! [hi]

Manna—I always keep diatomaceous earth on hand for the ants. But I never thought about putting it in a old spice jar to sprinkle. Good idea!

Very rainy and very windy here today and only about 44°.

I did a load of laundry this morning and watched the church service on the National Cathedral’s website.

I feel guilty about not going to see my mom for Mother’s Day, but she didn’t want me to come with the weather. There’s been some more Covid in her retirement center and she wants my vaccine to take full effect before I come back.

Some of the unvaccinated employees have spread the Covid to some of the residents. Most residents are vaccinated but they are probably so elderly and immune compromised that they can still get the disease. So the retirement center is now going to require every employee get vaccinated.

So, I called mom and we chatted a long time.

I’ve been snuggled on the couch most of the afternoon reading and plan to do the same this evening.

DE should work outside as long as it doesn't get wet???

Be careful not to breathe it in.

Had two nice church services. I enjoyed sharing my "birdies" with all the women of the church.

Came home and slept two hours!

Also went to the store late this afternoon.

Happy Mother's Day to everyone !

We are in for very cool week .. I love it!

I did my knee exercises.

Then spent most of the day oiling more teak furniture. I finished all of the teak, except one chair and ran out of oil. I did my desk, chest, 2 chairs, 3 leaves to the dining room table and large bookshelf.

I just finished putting everything back in place on my desk and bookshelf. Will need to get more oil to finish the last teak chair and oil the antique walnut dining room chairs. Then mom wants me to oil her furniture.

I am very sore and don't even want to think about how sore I will be tomorrow.

Talked to mom.

Need to get garbage, recycling, and landscape waste to curb when it stops raining.

Baking day. Wanted to get an early start but instead had a call from a friend who needed a 'sister' to listen and reassure her.

Saw four deer in the creek on the other side of the garden. Oh dear! We will need to fence the garden.

Talked with my sis-in-law a little while this afternoon.

Answered two emails from friends.

Texted with my sister, who is thinking of coming to visit later this month! We're excited!

Am tired and ready for bed.

Got an email saying our chicks have shipped today. 1 - 3 days till they get here. Will need to get the pen completed tomorrow morning.

Happy belated Mother's day everyone! Josh took me and Mom out for a delicious dinner at Bonefish Grill for Mother's day. Mom loved the wallet I bought her. We are so blessed!

Took Mom for her MRI and labs checking on her liver. Drove the couple hours to Atlanta and back. We'll get results next week.

On the way home the doctor's office called and said to either return to Atlanta or take Mom to the ER because her potassium was too low. So we were scared and I drove even faster than usual and got her to the ER. They gave her liquid potassium after more lab work. They also did a heart xray and EKG. We're home and she's resting comfortably.

Hiker I have family that work with the elderly and vaccines are a job requirement for them too. I know your Mom enjoyed the long chitchat!

Manna how wonderful that your sister is coming for a visit! I'd be excited too!

TuTu that is so sweet that you made all the ladies some birdies! I know they'll be cherished!

Well guys I'm beat and am going to read just a bit before bed. Night all!

[sleepy]

Manna .. That's awesome about your sister coming to visit! I wish I had a sister!!

Hiker.. Rest that shoulder before attempting more!

AK .. That's scary about the potassium. That is what happened to me after a colonoscopy about 13 years ago. I went into A-fib because my potassium was low.

I'm sure your mom told you how much that stuff burns in an IV! Hope she is OK now and they will keep a check on it.

I think the ladies did enjoy the birdies! The guests were happy too!

Ran all my errands this morning while hubby was at his show. May have to go out one more time to get prescriptions. They aren't ready yet.

AK--Glad the Md caught the potassium issue with your mom. Hope she is okay now.

Manna--Hope your sister can come. My brother is supposed to come in a few weeks, but he is pretty iffy about the date right now.

I did my balance exercises.

Watered a few plants outside. I transplanted some of my coreopsis and it doesn't seem to be doing well.

Went to chiropractor and then relaxed to let manipulation hold.

Spent a lot of time watching the birds--orioles, red breasted grosbeaks, warblers etc.

Worked a bit on my Bible study.

Have a good evening!

Today I checked the fruit trees.... we had frost several times and it got cold when the peach tree was full of blooms. The blossoms had all withered up and dropped off after that first frosty night.

There are tiny baby apples and peaches on the trees!!! Oh I'm so excited! The pear trees only had a few blossoms up near the tops of the trees. I couldn't see if there are any pears.

Did most of the laundry today. But haven't started folding it yet.

Had our first spinach salad fresh from the spinach I had planted in the mini greenhouses. I transplanted it into the edge of the strawberry bed.

Found netting to put around the dog crate to keep the chicks inside. Tomorrow or Thursday they will get here.

Frost advisory tonight. I carried all the flats of plants back in the greenhouse tonight. I was hoping we were done with frost warnings.

Thanks everyone for asking about my Mom. She seems OK today and we were just talking about getting her some pickled beets to boost her potassium level.

Today I did laundry also. Just had a couple of loads. Watered some things outside and worked on figuring out all my Mom's meds and supplements in preparation of her cardiology appointment tomorrow and her GP appointment next week.

I thought all this time that the supplements she was taking were recommended by her docs but found out she would see something on TV or hear about it from her friend and buy it.

She was taking things that interacted with each other and her regular meds. Stopped the fish oil and vitamin E and some she'll take until they're gone and not buy anymore.

Manna how exciting about the fruit trees bearing fruit! Fresh greens sound so awesome too!

Hiker me and Mom sat outside today too! We watched the birds and squirrels and were hoping to see a hummer. It was cooler and there was a wonderful breeze to keep us cool.

TuTu thank goodness Mom only had to take an oral liquid potassium. They did start an IV but she didn't need one. Scary about the A-fib! I'm glad we're going to her cardiologist tomorrow. We see her GP next week and I'm going to ask for them to monitor her potassium.

Going to Josh's after lunch to wait for an electrician that's coming out to give him an estimate on putting up some ceiling fans. Then have to take Mom for her appointment. So it'll be a busy day.

See you all tomorrow!

AK .. Fish oil?

Glad she is OK and will be monitored now.

Posted by hiker53 (Member # 6046) on :

AK--I just read an article where too much fish oil can cause afib of the heart. Take all the supplements or the ingredients to the MD. Even if she hasn't finished all of the bottles he may want her to stop.

Manna--Fruit on the trees already? Wow! We have one more night of frost and then hopefully done for the season.

I went grocery shopping this morning.

Did my knee exercises.

A couple of retired ladies stopped by and dug up some of my hostas that needed dividing. They were so nice and I wish they were my neighbors but they live across town. I belong to a plant group on Nextdoor that gives away or exchanges plants.

Went to the hardware store to get an attachment for my garden hose (sprayer). The store had marigolds on sale so I bought 24 plants.

Spaded up several areas where I will plant the marigolds, but then my knee and shoulder asked me to wait a day or two to actually plant them. I obliged those body parts! [Big Grin]

And now I am off to ice my shoulder and then grill burgers for dinner.

Went to Josh's to meet the electrician and afterwards took Mom to her cardio appointment.

Her doc took her off the statin and heart burn meds. Yay! Even though she doesn't have high cholesterol he prescribed it as a precaution when she had her heart attack back in 2016. Same with the heart burn med. She has an echo scheduled for July 1st.

Fish oil interacts with blood thinners and blood pressure meds.

I've got 6 marigolds planted in outdoor pots in our carport. They sure add a cheery pop of color.

Heading to bed to read!

See everyone tomorrow!

Today we got our chicks. The post office called before anyone was out of bed this morning. So we quick got ready and hurried off to pick them up!

26 little balls of fluff, peeping in a box. We have them in the dog crate with cardboard along the side to keep drafts out. Hung the heat lamp from the top and covered it with a table cloth.

They are eating and drinking and sleeping. Very happy and content in there.

This afternoon I transplanted the rest of my tomatoes. Didn't get around to doing more celery and parsley. Put everything back in the greenhouse again tonight as we have another frost advisory.

Time for bed, tomorrow is baking day again.

I did my balance exercises early this morning.

Then went to Bible study via Zoom.

Planted my 24 marigolds in various spots and watered them and my other flowers.

Weeded the strawberry and blueberry area.

Church next to me has not been mowing most of the yard (an acre). I talked politely to guy mowing and he was so rude. He called someone to prove it wasn’t zoned residential and found out it’s zoned residential and he did need to mow. Grass was 2 feet high.

I just want to keep out some varmits like groundhogs and skunks and keep the ticks away. He told me he was making a nature area but finally admitted he was saving time and money on gas. Such a Christian hypocrite. [tsk]

The church has been trying to sell the property for 2 years and I can’t wait until it is sold. Used to belong to a nice elderly couple who lived in the house and the other building was an art studio.

Time to ice the knee and the shoulder. Getting old stinks! [Roll Eyes] [Mad]

Manna—will these chicks be egg layers or grow up to be table food? Bet they are cute now.

Aww .. little chickies!! Sounds so cute!!

This is the year for marigolds, huh? Count me out. I don't like the smell of them. I used to plant them when we lived where we had deer in the yard.

I found out that deer WILL eat them if they aren't blooming. Conundrum!! LOL You could lose them before they ever get to bloom. [Smile]

Got my haircut today, washed sheets and other clothes, made deviled eggs and then cooked supper. I'm pooped!!

Also made a quick trip to Hobby Lobby for thread. I'm SO HAPPY that we have one less than 2 miles away. I used to drive 35-40 miles for that!!

Have a great evening, everyone!

These chicks will be laying eggs, except for the one rooster we got. Hoping to be able to hatch some eggs next year. We got a mixture of 6 brown egg layers, 6 white egg layers and 10 Easter Eggers which lay blue, green, pinkish and brown eggs.

The mixtures of brown & white layers are all kinds or colors of birds. It was cheaper getting a mix rather than individual kinds. Oh yes, my daughter got 2 Welsummer chicks too. They lay speckled brown eggs.

We are looking forward to a very colorful eggs basket this fall!

We have marigolds growing too! Haven't planted any flowers out yet. Tonight was another frost advisory, so everything got carried back into the greenhouse! After tonight its supposed to start warming up at night, into the 40's and 50's.

Baking day.

Went along with our son to the DMV to get the last of our vehicles license plates changed over. Now that is done! They all need inspections yet. One is set up for next Thursday. The other two need work first.

Sonny got the old Moped running with help from Hubby. He was so pleased!

Hubby coached another son as he sawed down a dead tree near the garden.

Some of the children worked at the terraced beds in the backyard. I'm hoping to get one kind of the strawberries planted tomorrow. 2 more kinds come next week. 25 of each.

I went out last night to celebrate being maskless. They have outdoor music at a downtown pizza joint with various performers on different days of the week.

I thoroughly enjoyed myself and got home about 10:30 p.m.

Enjoyed reading about the little chickies!

Happy to hear you don't have to drive so far to Hobby Lobby TuTu.

2 foot high grass sounds horrible! Down here you'd have to worry about snakes!

Beautiful day here and would normally be outside but am fasting today so will take it easy.

See everyone tomorrow!

Ak--Sounds like fun. I am not ready to be totally maskless, yet, but it hasn't been 2 weeks since my vaccine, either.

I did my knee exercises.

Watered my flowers, strawberries and blueberries. Some of the blueberry plants are in bloom as are the strawberries. I only have 20 strawberry plants, but they are more for fun for me than for serious produce.

Another gal stopped by to get some hostas. So far I have had 4 ladies who have come by. I am now closing the hosta give-away for the year, but the daisy give-away is still open. [Big Grin]

My BFF is coming after work. Will probably get Chipotle although both of us are watching what we eat. Nice day to sit on the patio and catch up.

Today I planted the potatoes with two of the boys help. One ran the tiller, the other hoed the rows and covered them, while I planted them. We then planted a packet of corn.

Built a flowerbed in the shady corner of the house, using bricks as the edging. I want to plant impatiens in that bed, if I can find some. None of my seeds came up. I'll also plant my African Lilies in that bed.

Did most of the laundry today. Now to get it folded and put away.

Got my taxes ready to mail tomorrow. That's done!!

No frost advisory tonight! So all the plants will stay outside tonight.

Hubby & Sonny were measuring for the deck. We'll work at it when my sis & her hubby come next weekend. They wanted to help with a project while they are here.

Posted by hiker53 (Member # 6046) on :

Manna--I am sure you are excited about your sister coming. And what a bonus that she and her hubby will help with the deck!

I woke up early this morning to a blaring alarm in my house that I had never heard before. Also the electricity was off.

Turned out to be an alarm on my back up sump pump. Hitting the reset button or unplugging it didn't stop the noise. Finally located a wrench and unhooked the leads from the battery and then reconnected them more tightly and the awful noise stopped.

Not a great way to start the day.

It has been lightly raining all day, but it takes a really hard rain of several inches for the sump pump to turn on.

I did my balance exercises.

Then I did 2 loads of laundry and have more to do tomorrow.

Worked on Bible study.

Put away most of my winter shirts and got out my short sleeve shirts.

Took a short nap and am now going to watch the Preakness. Maybe Midnight Bourbon will come through this time. [Big Grin]

Ugh...way over did it again in the yard. Moved 41 pavers that were behind some of the bushes in the front of the house. Had to dig down that area quite a bit and moved that good soil to the some of the bare spots in the front yard.

Put down weedblock in that area and spread 10 more bags of large pine bark nuggets for mulch.

Spread out the good soil with a rake.

Had to use 3 more bags of compost with manure to build up the ground around my black plastic edging.

I was outside for 6 hours and I'm sure paying for it. Having lots of muscle cramps even in my hands!

Heading for bed and see you all tomorrow!

[hi]

AK, I think I'll join you! Worked outside and way overdid it. I hurt.

Got my african lilies planted in a new flowerbed. I built it with bricks. Laid cardboard on top of the grass and covered the cardboard with leaves.

Placed the lily bulbs on top and then carried umpteen buckets of ground I shoveled up to cover the bulbs and fill the bed.

Planted 26 strawberry plants. Watered them and my grass growing under the washlines.

Cleared the front porch and washed it with a broom and a bucket of soapy water. Carried the norfolk pine, the corn palm and the meyer lemon tree out on the porch.

Helped daughter get all the clean laundry folded.

Two of the children worked at enlarging the picnic area. Hauled stones up from the creek to edge it with and build the steps up to that level. Looks nice so far.
