Happy New Year! 🌌

I know many of us make new year’s resolutions. Maybe one of those resolutions can be to encourage it each other to exercise.

Exercise can be walking, riding a bike, cleaning, shopping, lifting weights etc.

So, tell us about your movement or just tell us about your day.

And may 2023 be filled with joy, peace, good health and exercise! [woohoo]

I stayed up past midnight last night because a friend called pretty late and was in a chatty mood. So, I slept in a bit this morning.

I watched my church’s service this morning.

Did a load of laundry.

Took down my Christmas decorations. Made me a bit sad to put them away for another year.

Called my mom.

Other than that I have been reading. A good day to be lazy, I think.

Thanks again Hiker for getting us motivated!

I had to run a couple errands today then Josh came by at 2:00 and he drove us to pick up Chinese take-out for New Year's.

The 3 of us visited with each other and had a great time.

Mom was pretty tired and went to her room by 6:00 so Josh and I watched the movie Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery. It was not a scary movie! Yay!

Tuesday we're going to the movies to see the new Avatar movie in 3 D. I'm excited about that. I enjoyed the first one quite a bit. CG has come a long way and I love the graphic art.

Been slogging through a downloaded book and had to renew it once so hoping to read a bit tonight.

Oh and BB I did get some wonderful Christmas gifts. I must have been good this year because Santa brought me a selfie stick/tripod, a Roku for my TV, chocolates, nuts, scarves, a case of variety beer, gift cards and cash!

I already bought 2 silver rings and a silver necklace. Also snagged 2 hummingbird feeder rings for me and Mom for later this year.

Signing off for now. Night gang!

Ak--A 3D movie would send me into myoclonic seizures immediately. I can't even watch a movie on a big screen at a theater.

I warmed up on the exercise bike for 10 minutes this morning. Then did my knee and feet exercises.

I watched the Rose Bowl Parade. It is my favorite parade of the year with all the floats made with flowers and seeds. I recorded it and watched it throughout the day.

I did watch the Illini-Mississippi football bowl game.

Rode the exercise bike another 20 minutes.

Called mom. Took a short nap.

Wrote a letter to a friend.

I just took the garbage down to the curb.

I defrosted a meatloaf I made some time ago and will have it with broccoli and tossed salad.

Anyone make any New Year's resolutions? I made the following:

1. I cannot buy chips during January.

2. I will continue to exercise the best I can with a goal of 100 minutes per week of cardio. But I am not going to beat myself up about it.

3. I will keep up with blessing/prayer journal daily.

4. I have a one-word resolution for the year. That word is "posture." Not only do I need to work on my physical posture, but for me posture refers to how I act. Do I need a posture of humility? Do I need a posture of rest one day? Do I need a posture where I am audacious another day? etc.

Have a good evening! [Smile]

Like your resolutions Hiker! Missed the parade this year.

PT twice for Mom and once for me so far.

First thing this morning I finally went and got my haircut. Ran to the bank, which was closed, then off to pick up water and from there to Sam's to make Mom's payment and pick up a couple of items.

Home to make brunch and then cut Mom's hair. Squeezed in 2 loads of laundry and unpacked 4 more boxes which was mostly china and glassware.

So of course I had to wash them all by hand.

Thank goodness leftovers for dinner.

Had to take the trash out too and now I've got some down time.

Whew...I'm beat guys. See you all tomorrow!

Baking day. Did less than usual again as its slow over the holidays.

Folded 4 loads of wash.

Cut out 2 dresses.

Sewed the zipper in the one I started on Saturday.

Sis-in-law called and we gabbed awhile.

Gave the chickens food and water. 3 eggs today. One of the young roosters was out of the pen. We need to go out and clip wings one night, to prevent them from flying over the fence. Caught him and put him back in the pen. The dog was trying to help catch him!

Oddly warm and humid here today. 62, but won’t get out of the 30’s tomorrow. Roller coaster weather driving my Eustachian tubes crazy.

I did my balance exercises and then warmed up more for 5 minutes on the exercise bike. Then did my plantar fasciitis exercises and shoulder exercises.

Talked to my cousin who lives in Colorado. His call was a nice surprise.

Took my winter boots to the shoe repair shop. He thought he could fix them for $8 and have them ready by Friday.

Then rode the exercise bike for 20 more minutes this afternoon.

Did odds and ends—paid a bill, made hard boiled eggs, did my daily Bible reading. etc.

Manna—You lead an adventurous life with your animals! Do you ever feel like you are running around like a chicken with its head cut off (pun intended)? [Big Grin]

See you tomorrow. [hi]

akin- love silver jewelry. When I went to the pawn shop to find a router, I noticed they had a lot of silver so I might go back.

Over did it with staying up late, eating junk, broken sleep, taking down decorations, cleaning house and ONCE AGAIN, am paying for it with unmanageable pain.

My family member who’s staying with me over the holiday, gives me nightly lidocaine mausages which feels so good and quells the pain.

Watching ALOT of movies. But saw a great movie last night with NO ending, AGAIN. Why?????

Talked to Aunt who was so sick a few months ago, she is doing really well now, thank God.

Talked to neighbor who is getting over covid, her and husband suffered greatly. Lost alot of weight. Both are calm and riding it out.

Been raining so me and dog have been sleeping alot. I’m not good company for my guest right now but I’m trying.

Ha! Yes, Hiker, it does feel that way sometimes. When I went to feed the chickens tonight, I was startled to see a guinea in the chicken pen, where the guineas used to be. Wasn't sure how I was going to catch him...

Then noticed the door where they used to go out. Opened it and shooed him over towards the door and he eagerly went out to join the rest of the guinea flock. That is probably why they were huddled outside the barn over there. They heard him inside.

Found 3 eggs, one with the end broken out. That hen ate her own egg. Not good! There are more fights going on in the chickenhouse. Time to get rid of a few more roosters. I counted at least 6 young ones.

Did the laundry today, but still need to fold it.

Worked at sewing my dresses. Finished the one and now am working at 2 at the same time. Factory style.

Wrote a letter and mailed it to my friend. Got a sympathy card ready for my nephew.

For lunch we had oyster soup.

The boys went out for their work Christmas banquet tonight.

I put supper in the oven to bake while I sew. Meat loaf, mashed sweet potatoes with a crunchy topping, peas n carrots, and a blackberry cobbler.

Its raining here. Hubby was trying to 'mud' the walls of the cold cellar to keep water or critters from coming in. Said one place a little stream of water came through and washed the 'mud' away. He will need to do it on a dry day so it can cure.

PT in the a.m. for me and Mom and just her for the p.m.

Ran to the bank and tried to get more pain meds for my Mom from her GP without success. She's up to 4 half pills every 6 hours now. Was just one half in the evening, then another half around 4.

Sent an email to the nurse navigator who's working with Mom's oncologist and hope they'll help.

Hamburgers for lunch and dinner.

Cancer support meeting was great.

The movie in 3 D was incredible and had such a good time with Josh.

One of Mom's friends in Atlanta passed away from Covid yesterday. Her husband is recovering and went home today. So sad!

Manna I don't know what to think about the cannibal chicken and rooster catching dog! I'd enjoy watching the dog though.

Hiker you're getting a lot of use out of your new bike!

BB definitely go back and peek at the jewelry! Covid seems to be rearing its ugly head again after Christmas. Glad your neighbors are OK.

Oh...BTW gang, say a prayer or send good thoughts my way tomorrow because I have a dreaded dentist appointment to get fitted for a crown. Hope it's done in one day.

Sleep tight friends!

[hi]

Ak--Hope the dental appointment went well.

I just talked to another friend last night and she has a bad case of Covid. She has a lot of health issues and is older, so please say a prayer for Jayne. A childhood friend of mine got covid last year and had long covid. She sleeps most of the day. Very sad.

I slept in today. Not sure why I am so tired, but I can easily sleep 9-10 hours.

Went grocery shopping. I passed by the chip aisle and didn't even buy the Doritos that were on sale for $2.22. That was not easy for this chip addict!

Did my knee and feet exercises.

Called mom. Also chatted with my BFF who is pretty much recovered from covid but is still tired.

Then worked on my investment portfolio most of the afternoon.

Rode the exercise bike for 20 minutes.

Will have broiled brats with zucchini and tossed salad tonight.

Then watching Illini basketball.

Dentist appointment went pretty good. Have to go back on the 23rd for permanent crown and night guard that's being made for my lower teeth.

I came straight home because it took so long and kinda tweaked my neck a bit.

PT once for me and Mom and we polished off the leftover Chinese food while watching our latest Chinese historical drama...LOL!

Yep...living the life of Riley over here!

Tomorrow is going to be a pajama party with more TV watching.

Blessed to spend time with my Mom.

Hiker praying for your friend Jayne. BTW, it's incredible to pass on Doritos for $2.22 a bag! I try not to go down the cookie or chip aisle at all! So tempting! Also what is your secret for sleeping so long? I'm lucky if I sleep 6 hours. Manna had mentioned 5 HTP so I'm looking into that with GABA and L-Theanine. I have RX sleeping pills but they make me tired the next day.

Anyways gang hope everyone gets a good night's rest!

Got the second dress finished today. The next one is ready for the skirt to be sewed together and then attached to the bodice.

Dug a shallow ditch and laid the rounded side of a log slice down in the ditch. The top is flat to make a level path to walk on around the side of the barn on the downhill side. It is so muddy and slippery, I'm half scared to walk there.

Found a young rooster with a wing stuck under the A frame roost in the chicken pen. I picked him up and he kinda hobbled around at first, then scooted over to the grain I'd thrown on the floor. He was busily eating when I left.

Now I need to mix up my sourdough bread so it can rise overnight. Tomorrow is baking day again. Someone ordered 3 packs of dinner rolls.

I am tired tonight.

Our Bible study group had share and prayer this morning.

Worked more on finances. Went to two banks. I needed an appointment at one, so go back tomorrow. The other one had a spot open with a banker but the guy was pretty clueless. We got what I needed worked out but it took a long time. Also got to see the notary for a specific document.

Did my balance, shoulder and feet exercises. Then rode the exercise bike for 15 minutes.

Had some snow today but should be sunny tomorrow.

It took me 2 days to make vegetable beef soup. It turned out very tasty.

Stopped to pick up my meds and got sticker shock.
It’s a new year so deductibles have to be paid first.

Vacuumed laundry room and dinning room.
Washed kitchen floor.
Called it quits, made lunch and took a 2 hour nap.

Called my neighbor who is still struggling with coviid. Cough and sore throat are still issues along with losing weight. She gets everything delivered. Today she got Bob Evans breakfast delivered!

Took dog for walk but I got very dizzy and was scared I wouldn’t make it back to the house.

I was eating a piece of leftover pizza and 1/2 my tooth cracked off. I ran to bathroom but couldn’t see where. With my tongue, I found it broke off on inside so you can’t see it from the front. Ugh, another Dentist visit. It’s always something. . .

Looking forward to getting a good nights sleep, last night was challenging.

Made tea with homemade chocolate chip cookies. (only 2)

Baking day. 14 white, 7 sourdough, 6 Italian, 3 wheat, 3 cinnamon raisin, 4 packs of dinner rolls. Keeps me stepping to get it all done.

Got a letter written and sent some dried sourdough starter to a friend.

Fed & watered the chickens. Another chicken was out side and when I opened the door she went inside. Fortunately the dog wasn't around and didn't scare her away. So I caught her and popped her back in the pen. Saw the rooster that had been caught yesterday was acting normal, so hopefully he's okay. His feathers still looked a bit rumpled.

Supper was chicken noodle soup and sandwiches.

Spent a nice relaxing day with Mom. I skipped brunch but made her a grilled cheese/tomato sandwich and soup.

Easy dinner of Ramen noodle soup with a spam and egg omelet sliced up on top. Also sliced tomatoes with Ponzu sauce for a salad. Rum cake and tea for dessert.

PT twice for Mom and once for me.

Manna glad the rooster is OK. Reading about all the bread is making me hungry!

Hiker I dread doing taxes this year. Used TurboTax last year but had issues so going to pay to have them done and last year's amended. Hope it doesn't cost me an arm and a leg!

BB I broke my tooth on a cracker! I'm wearing a night guard in the hopes it'll save my teeth. You're right though...it's always something...

Time to read. Night all!

[hi]

Glad you could relax with your mom, AK. I loved grilled cheese. Wish I didn’t have to be gluten free. And Bonnie, I crave homemade cookies. Gluten free cookies just aren’t the same. So, eat an extra one for me today.

I know what you mean about taxes. I hate doing my taxes.

I did my knee and feet exercises. Rode the exercise bike 15 minutes and exceeded my 100 minute per week goal. Only 51 more weeks to go. [Big Grin]

Went to another bank today. I am adding or changing beneficiaries on all my accounts. Each bank and investment firm seems to have different rules.

Picked up my winter boots from the shoe repair shop and hope they sit idle for a long time.

Stopped at the library where I had 6 books on hold.

Called mom.

Watched a Christian video after listening to National Cathedral morning prayer.

It’s Friday, so a small gluten free cheese pizza and tossed salad. Then reading and mindless TV.

Did the washing today.

Sewed the 3rd dress - needs a zipper and hem. Had to order the zipper as I forgot to get one.

Sewed 3 pillow cases for throw pillows. Plan to give them to friends of ours as part of a house warming gift. They will hopefully soon be getting their insurance money so they can buy a new home. Their house burnt last summer.

Thinking about making a lemon meringue pie.....

Daughter made chili cornbread casserole for supper.

We had snow flurries today.

PT twice for Mom and once for me.

We attended a ladies luncheon and had such a good time. We had more excitement than we could handle when the hostess German windmill carousel caught on fire. I jumped up first and tried to put it out with my cloth napkin. It caught on fire and I have a small blister on my wrist for my effort.

Someone much smarter than me handed me a sopping wet tea towel. Me and another lady who had another wet towel we able to put the fire out.

Two smoke alarms went off making it a memorable afternoon.

Afterwards took Mom home and had to get some groceries.

Bought fried chicken livers and I stir-fried some cabbage while Mom made rice for dinner.

We watched our show and am ready to read.

Manna chili cornbread casserole sounds so good!

Hiker way to go on the bike riding! Need to go to the library tomorrow because my Mom enjoyed my short easy to understand book Two Old Women. Hoping to find some novellas for her.

Night friends!

Did a load of laundry.

Also did my balance exercises, shoulder exercises, and feet exercises.

Watched part of the Illini-Wisconsin basketball game.

I stayed up way too late last night watching the drama of the House Speaker vote, so I took a long nap this afternoon. Worth watching since that number of votes to elect a speaker of the house has happened since 1859.

Chatted with a friend on the phone for quite awhile.

Defrosted spaghetti sauce and will have that over rice pasta with a salad and whatever vegetable I come up with.

Just reading tonight. Have a relaxing evening!

Folded wash and put it away.

Washed our bedding and put it back on the bed.

Fed & watered the chickens. Found 4 eggs this morning and sonny found 1 more this evening! 5 in one day is the best we had since that bitter cold.

The zippers I ordered came today! So around 2 I started cutting out a dress and had it completed by 6:30. Its washed and ready to wear to church tomorrow.

Not gonna do much this evening.

Supper was soup made with leftovers. Hot chocolate and chocolate chip cookies for dessert.

Its getting cold again - 29*.

Hubby took the trash out and saw a bright light up on the mountain...??!!??

A closer look - it was the moon, peeking through the trees!! LOL

Posted by aklnwlf (Member # 5960) on :

There was a big beautiful moon tonight!

Chatting with friends count as exercise!

Busy day of therapy, making brunch and shopping at the mall for a few hours. Definitely did quite a bit of walking today.

Josh had plans this weekend so Mom and I went out to dinner. We have enough leftovers for me to work my magic on them for 2 more meals each.

We had another slice of rum cake and hot tea while watching our show this evening.

All in all a great day!

See you guys tomorrow!

good idea to help motivate people to exercise

i think exercise has helped my recovery significantly.

obviously exercising with lyme is not a straightforward proposition
many will feel they cannot possibly exercise at all - and overdoing it is all too easy, and can actually set you back with more fatigue and adverse symptoms.

i didnt think exercise beyond maybe walking was a possibility for me despite exercising most of my life - due to feeling so ill with Lyme.

however, i have been surprised to find that even when feeling pretty weak and awful - i can not only start to exercise (if done carefully) but actually gain strength and physical capability - despite how uncomfortable exercise feels now - vs before i got Lyme.

not only does this give me all the benefits that exercise normally gives people:
better mood, sleep, overall health, self esteem etc
but it has actually increased what i can get done in a day - vs before i started
in other words it has helped me move my recovery forward in measurable ways

i thought i would post a few words i put together on how to exercise with lyme (as someone who experienced chronic fatigue, PEM etc)
much of it is in line with Dr Burrascano's guideline
but adds a bit more specific guidance.

========

Dr Burrascano talks about this in his 2008 guidelines for lyme treatment - see the sticky post at the top i think its in there somewhere - its well worth a read

basically we each have an ideal window to exercise in - whether sick or elite athletes

the bottom of the window is defined by the minimum amount we need to do to send a signal to our system to repair itself stronger in preparation for the next challenge
the upper end of the window is defined by the level beyond which we do more harm than good

the issue is that with lyme, especially in the beginning the lower end of the window is very close to the top end of the window- and such is a very narrow margin between doing enough and doing too much

also aerobic activities ( activities like jogging or HIT) seem to trigger much worse responses than anaerobic ones like resistance training. Dr Burrascano highlights this also - and it has been my experience too.

he also says its the strength exercises that are the most important for the immune system and essential to get better from lyme - so its good that you are looking into it.

as an example, I can walk 3-4 miles at a fast clip and be fine the next day - but if i try to run for even 100yards i will have ill feelings and extra fatigue the next day. yet I can do resistance exercises - like press-ups and dumbbells as long as i am careful. i had to build up very gradually at first though.

my advice:
-keep up the walking - its a great basic form of exercise and doesn't seem to trigger PEM unless you overdo it

-add in gradually some form of resistance training
- so weights, isometric etc - whatever works for you

-work out where you tolerance is - deliberately do too little to begin with and work up to find your limit - then back off a little.

-be systematic - keep records and have a target for each workout - make only v small increments each workout to avoid PEM reactions

-you will likely need longer recovery periods to begin with - so - esp if you have issues with PEM maybe only exercise 1x per 5-7 days

-later aim to gradually bring this down to 2-3 days in-between - and eventually every other day

-it will be slow at first - do not be discouraged - momentum will build

- focus on recovery as much as the actual exercise part

---diet ( your body needs good nutrition when fighting this thing and exercising) to recover well

---sleep - this when your body rebuilds itself best - the better you sleep, the better you will recover from exercise and the faster you will progress

-----------

i am following the above plan and am now able to workout 45mins every 3rd day and am getting stronger almost every workout ( something that hasn't really happened consistently since my mid 20's) - despite also treating lyme with antimicrobials at the same time.

i'm not saying exercise will feel good - it will not to begin with - but stick at it - be systematic - increment slowly - and you will be surprised how much you can do.

good luck!!
