Here we go with another week of movement. [woohoo]

Are you walking, shoveling snow, doing physical therapy, cleaning or shopping? I am sure you can think of a lot more ways you move and exercise every day.

So, tell us about your exercise or just tell us about your day.

And let’s encourage each other to keep moving!

Have a great week!! [hi]

Bonnie-I am watching the Bills-Bengals game now. Sorry to say it is not looking good for the Bills.

I watched the National Cathedral Church service online this morning. Super sermon about discipleship.

Did a load of laundry.

Road my exercise bike for 30 minutes. May regret that later.

Called mom.

Spent too much time on my iPad trying to convince locals to vote for the upcoming school referendum. Don’t think I changed any minds. I know it is tough economic times but I have to support our schools.

I have another Richard Paul Evans book that I am reading called “The Sunflower.” It is an older book but I haven’t read it.

I will finish watching this tragic football game and then rustle up dinner. [Big Grin] Meatloaf is the main part of the meal.

AK—How was the trip to the medical center? How is your mom?

See you tomorrow. Hopefully will get my new ear tube. Appointment not until 4:30. And I lack patience. [Wink]

Hiker- Your dinner is an analogy of todays Bills game.
The Bills were meatloaf and the Cincinnati Bengals were filet mignon. Still, the Bills brought much joy to a city that suffered many adversities this year.

I felt much better this morning. Gargling with sea salt every hour and taking Zicam rapid chews, along with supplements and Amox.

I vacuumed the upstairs bedrooms. I haven’t climbed stairs in quite awhile so that was huge.

Gathered up clothes, boots and some household items for the Goodwill.

Took out garbage.

Walked the dog.

Thawed out lasagna for lunch/dinner.

Having tea and and a piece of chocolate cake. I earned it today!

Sorry guys, we've been whooped!

Mom did great and we got home about 3:30 on Friday.

The downside though was her appointment with the Onco. Found out the immunotherapy infusion treatments are very 3-4 weeks permanently or until she has bad side effects. Also he prescribed morphine tablets.

So I think they're boosting her immune system and keeping her as pain free as possible.

Having trouble with Walgreens filling the new RX due to a shortage. They said if they can't get it in by Wednesday to try another pharmacy.

Oh another thing the Onco said was to try and see if we can find a closer Doc that will do the infusions. We have a small cancer center here but they don't do the same treatment. I'm calling them tomorrow and see if they can't work with her Onco.

Oh and I almost forgot I'm getting my permanent crown tomorrow.

So busy, busy for awhile.

Thank you guys so much for all the support and prayers.

[group hug]

I just got back from getting a new ear tube. The ENT put in a larger one that may last longer. Then he said the left ear tube was about to fall out and to come back in two months to replace it. Joy.

I rode the exercise bike for 5 minutes this morning to warm up for my knee and feet exercises which I did do.

Rode the exercise bike an additional 15 minutes after lunch.

Called mom and then worked more on finances and income tax. Each day that I get a form I input it to the digital tax format.

Cleaned the bathroom.

Took the garbage bin to the curb.

Bratwurst for dinner. Then relaxing.

Hiker- just read your post, got out of bed, got dressed and me and the dog went outside to take garbage bins to the road. Thanks for reminding me.

Sore today from all the household chores yesterday. I always over do it on my good days. 🙃

This morning went for blood work. I always get a very early appointment because the tests are fasting and I NEED coffee asap in the morning.

Stopped at Aldi’s to get organic fruits and vegetables for my smoothies. I didn’t have enough energy to blend them so it will have to wait till tomorrow.

Picked up my script at pharmacy. It will be awhile till I reach my deductible.

Started chicken soup, it’s not done yet.

My dog is a brand new dog since I picked her up from groomer.
She’s running around the house, chasing the cats, eating like a horse and sleeps a lot less. Her haircut made her feel young again! I wish that worked for me.

Both my neighbors called while I was laying down. They know I take afternoon naps. They also know I like to gab, lol. So no nap today.

My Antonio Banderas looking Urologist appointment is tomorrow.
Can’t wait. I WILL spend extra time on my appearance, he he.

Having tea and cut up cantaloupe.

Getting my crown was not to painful. No shots so no swelling and numbness...yay!

Planned on eating there and grocery shopping. It's about 45 minutes away from me but had a little episode with Benadryl.

I took a couple dye free capsules right before I went into the dentist office and by the time I was done they kicked in hard!

Never had that happen before and was so loopy thank God I made it home.

After those wore off I picked up fried chicken sliders and fries for dinner.

Stayed on the couch with Mom and binge watched our latest show.

BB gave me a chuckle about your doc! Enjoy your appointment!

Hiker glad you got one ear taken care of!

PT twice for me and Mom today and once for my shoulder.

See everyone tomorrow!

[hi]

Just a MCAS tip, AK:

If you aren't having a reaction, try taking just one pill. Then if you react, take more.

When having a reaction, the benadryl is eaten up by the mast cells, but if NO reaction then you will feel sedated.

Experience. .. lol...

Baking day. 30 loaves of bread.

Got the laundry washed and dried and folded! But not put away.

Took care of the birds twice today. Got 10 eggs. There's one chicken laying an olive colored egg. We have a colorful egg basket with various shades of brown, cream, green, blue and white. And now an olive green.

Last night heard coyotes yipping. They were across the road off on the mountain somewhere. Our dogs barked and hopefully scared them off. Thankfully we have shocking fences and pen up our birds and animals at night.

Started on a quilt top this evening. Got a stack of patches cut of 2 colors. Ready to start on the 3rd color. Its a pinwheel pattern.

great idea to aid motivation and encourage people to keep physically active Hiker

i posted the below in one of your older exercise threads - but i dont think many people saw it there - so thought it might be worth posting again here

its a more exercise focussed approach - so many might feel its out of their reach - but i felt like that too before i started and have been surprised how much i have been able to do over time by:
# starting v low
# being systematic
# increasing only in v small steps

==================

i think exercise has helped my recovery significantly.

obviously exercising with lyme is not a straightforward proposition
many will feel they cannot possibly exercise at all - and overdoing it is all too easy, and can actually set you back with more fatigue and adverse symptoms.

i didn't think exercise beyond maybe walking was a possibility for me despite exercising most of my life - due to feeling so ill with Lyme, and every movement hurt and just felt bad initially.

however, i have been surprised to find that even when feeling pretty weak and awful - i can not only start to exercise (if done carefully) but actually gain strength and physical capability - despite how uncomfortable exercise feels now - vs before i got Lyme.

not only does this give me all the benefits that exercise normally gives people:
better mood, sleep, overall health, self esteem etc
but it has actually increased what i can get done in a day - vs before i started
in other words it has helped me move my recovery forward in measurable ways

i thought i would post a few words i put together on how to exercise with lyme (as someone who experienced chronic fatigue, PEM etc)
much of it is in line with Dr Burrascano's guideline
but adds a bit more specific guidance.

========

Dr Burrascano talks about this in his 2008 guidelines for lyme treatment - see the sticky post at the top i think its in there somewhere - its well worth a read

basically we each have an ideal window to exercise in - whether sick or elite athletes

the bottom of the window is defined by the minimum amount we need to do to send a signal to our system to repair itself stronger in preparation for the next challenge
the upper end of the window is defined by the level beyond which we do more harm than good

the issue is that with lyme, especially in the beginning the lower end of the window is very close to the top end of the window- and such is a very narrow margin between doing enough and doing too much

also aerobic activities ( activities like jogging or HIT) seem to trigger much worse responses than anaerobic ones like resistance training. Dr Burrascano highlights this also - and it has been my experience too.

he also says its the strength exercises that are the most important for the immune system and essential to get better from lyme - so its good that you are looking into it.

as an example, I can walk 3-4 miles at a fast clip and be fine the next day - but if i try to run for even 100yards i will have ill feelings and extra fatigue the next day. yet I can do resistance exercises - like press-ups and dumbbells as long as i am careful. i had to build up very gradually at first though.

my advice:
-keep up the walking - its a great basic form of exercise and doesn't seem to trigger PEM unless you overdo it

-add in gradually some form of resistance training
- so weights, isometric etc - whatever works for you

-work out where you tolerance is - deliberately do too little to begin with and work up to find your limit - then back off a little.

-be systematic - keep records and have a target for each workout - make only v small increments each workout to avoid PEM reactions

-you will likely need longer recovery periods to begin with - so - esp if you have issues with PEM maybe only exercise 1x per 5-7 days

-later aim to gradually bring this down to 2-3 days in-between - and eventually every other day

-it will be slow at first - do not be discouraged - momentum will build

- focus on recovery as much as the actual exercise part

---diet ( your body needs good nutrition when fighting this thing and exercising) to recover well

---sleep - this when your body rebuilds itself best - the better you sleep, the better you will recover from exercise and the faster you will progress

-----------

i am following the above plan and am now able to workout 45mins every 3rd day and am getting stronger almost every workout ( something that hasn't really happened consistently since my mid 20's) - despite also treating lyme with antimicrobials at the same time.

i'm not saying exercise will feel good - it will not to begin with - but stick at it - be systematic - increment slowly - and you will be surprised how much you can do.

good luck!!

Garz—welcome to the exercise thread.

Feel free to stop by frequently and tell us what you do for exercise.

What does your workout involve?

So glad you are able to exercise! [Smile]

Posted by Garz (Member # 52095) on :

sure, i am around 60% recovered at this point - my workouts look like this now (this is my best one to date)

mostly just bodyweight exercises - so no equipment needed to start with:

125 squats-60 straight then +10+20+10+10+15
60 press ups straight
48 isometric curls
30+20 isometric above head presses
30 dumbbell curls
30 dumbbell shrugs
130 heel raises

its quite a lot for someone who is still sick - but i had to work up from doing only 10 of each exercise

before this i started by walking 2-3miles a day and still do this every day before my lunch

You must have some muscles, Garz!!

Posted by hiker53 (Member # 6046) on :

Garz—I am impressed and glad you have stuck with your regimen.

Today was my day for balance exercises. So, I did those and then moved on to my shoulder therapy exercises. Lots of stretching and several resistance bands exercises. The ew ear tube really helped with my balance!

Then I did my usual plantar fasciitis exercises.

After lunch I rode the exercise bike for 15 minutes.

Went to the library again. I should just put my recliner in there. [Big Grin]

Saw the chiropractor today. So, now I get to relax and drink lots of fluids. She always tells me to drink a lot of water after a manipulation.

AK—any big birthday plans tomorrow?

Tutu—has the snow started in your region, yet. It will arrive here after midnight and be a compact wet snow. Someone will have to shovel my drive and walk.

Dinner tonight is chicken breast, broccoli and tossed salad. I really need to get more creative with my cooking.

i have really been surprised what the body can do - when exercise feels so alien and uncomfortable to do when you are ill - and yet it gets a little stronger each time

just wanted to give some people some encouragement that - if done carefully even sick people can do exercise - and if you just start low and slow you may be surprised where you end up.

hiker - my food is generally very healthy - but a little repetitive also

maybe we should start a similar motivational thread for

"what food did you cook today..."

and post up some photos etc [Big Grin]

That would be great, Garz, if only we could post photos here. I have few choices of food, but I'm not starving.

Exercise today:

I did 21 min on the two machines I use at cardiac rehab, only 10 laps because my legs and hips hurt from the walking yesterday at the fitness center.

Also did weights today and arm cranks.

We are due to get 6 inches of snow tonight so all of my exercising will be done at home till Thursday or Friday.

Hiker .. our snow is supposed to be wet and heavy. We've only had tiny flakes so far. I think it's just getting started.

Garz- thanks for posting your exercise regimen.

Hiker-so happy for you on finally getting new ear tubes put in.

There are some days that I cannot exercise due to extreme fatigue.
I take care of my responsibilities in the morning and I do a lot of walking. But by the time I get home, I’m done.

Exercise was by far the #1 reason why I got well, many many times.
I’ll get there again.

My Antonio Banderas urology appointment this morning. . .
“We locked eyes. . . . big smiles instantaneously came upon our faces. . .. we serenaded each other's hearts in soundless suspended time.”

Reality . . .
He ordered urine test, script and catheter infusion. Bummer.

I finished chicken soup, very tasty and enough for a few days.

Walked dog twice. Dizzy walking though.

Received my blood work tests but a lot were not performed?
Called quest. They couldn’t figure out the problem and will get back to me. Very strange.

Dog was fine all day yesterday but awoke me in the middle of the night yelping. I picked her up and rocked her for 15 minutes. She was unaware of her surroundings but returned to normal. She fell back to sleep within 1/2 hour. I was scared for her. I was scared for myself, I was shaking. Today she’s fine.

Hoping to find a good comedy movie on tonight. I like to laugh 😜🤪😛

Time for tea and 3 berry muffin.

Hi guys and welcome Garz.

Me and Mom did our usual am and pm SI joint PT and I did one set for my shoulder.

Been working on trying to transition my Mom's care locally but it's a struggle. We were both a bit discouraged.

Ran errands today, made a payment, gassed up car and picked up a small pumpkin cheesecake and coffee ice cream for my BDay tomorrow.

Made reservations at a little Italian restaurant for 4, me, Mom, Josh and my friend Theresa.

Other than that I'm sure me and Mom will be watching more episodes of our latest drama but hoping she'll do a feel good movie instead.

BB loved the your version vs reality with Dr Hottie. Had me laughing!

TuTu thanks for the much needed tip!

Hiker I need to return the books to the library that I checked out for my Mom. She said she was struggling with the older short stories so I bought 2 books on Amazon for the elderly reader and hope she'll like them. They be here Friday.

Manna sounds like you had a beautiful basket of Easter eggs!

Garz I was just thinking this evening how hard I worked out 10 years ago to go hiking and non-technical mountain climbing with my nephew in Alaska. I used a stair climber for 30 minutes, worked out to 3 DVDS, arms, abs and lower body and threw in a little weight training. Need to build some muscle so thinking of weight training again.

Anyways....I need to get motivated!

Night guys!

[hi]

AK--HAPPY BIRTHDAY! Enjoy your dinner out tonight and get motivated tomorrow. [Big Grin]

We had enough heavy snow today that I hired my usual guy to shovel. Actually I paid him for the winter and if there are over 2 inches he comes and shovels. We had about 4 inches today.

I warmed up on the exercise bike for 5 minutes. Then did my knee and feet exercises.

After lunch I went to the grocery store and stocked up the freezer with meat. Some good sales today in the butcher section.

Called mom.

I chatted with a friend for quite a while and while talking on the phone I rode the exercise bike another 20 minutes. We always have such great conversations and the time flies by.

Day went by fast. See you tomorrow! [Smile]

akin- hope you had a wonderful birthday day! Your desserts sound fabulous!

It was a very painful day for my body today due to the sudden drop In barometric pressure and storm arriving. I was busy addressing all my symptoms to become comfortable.

My neighbor called saying she was suffering greatly.
I said I feel your pain. It’s so hard to not get depressed. So we talk through it and it helps. 😊

I made my weeks worth of smoothies.
I bottled them up and realized I forgot to add the blueberries.
I had placed them in the back of the fridge and didn’t see them.

But I also found a piece of leftover b-day cake from 11 days ago.
I really want to eat it. It was in the back of fridge where my food will sometimes freeze so I think it’s ok?

Walked dog to mailbox.

Brushed all animals and turned on bird videos for the cats to watch. So funny!

I washed a load of robes and sweats.

Listened to a Lyme video by Monica Embers while I was taking an epsom salt bath. Man is she a smart researcher, very detailed but understandable.

Tried taking a nap but no dice.

Exhausted, will be early night.

Posted by Lymetoo (Member # 743) on :

Bonnie .. I hate barometric pressure pain also. Some days I can't figure out why my pain is bad. Then I realize a storm is coming.

Do you take Curcumin or something for inflammation?

Posted by hiker53 (Member # 6046) on :

Bonnie and Tutu--Barometric pressure changes play havoc with my eustachian tube problems. I bet they make my arthritis pain worse, too.

We had a little more snow overnight. I cleared the drive and it was icy underneath, so put down some ice melt. More to come the next week or so. I don’t mind the snow, but hate the ice and wind.

I had to open a 40 pound package of ice melt that my brother gave me and lifting 40 pounds is too much for my shoulder. Scooped some out into a small container and managed to pour the rest into a large bucket and then realized I have no cover for the bucket. Don't want moisture to get in.

Did my balance and feet exercises. Then did a lot of shoulder stretches. No exercise bike today as shoveling a double drive took the place of that.

After lunch I took a wonderful hour-long nap. I stayed up way too late last night and I need to go to bed at my regular 10 PM hour instead of midnight.

Then I washed the flannel sheets and put them back on the bed.

Read some and am ready to fix dinner. I need to finish up the chicken so will make chicken salad.

Have a relaxing evening.

Baking day again.

Did a few loads of laundry.

Carried banana peels and rancid nuts out to the chicken pasture.

Gather 9 eggs today.

Ordered supplements.

Hubby went with oldest son to get a vehicle inspected and stop at the bank.

Hubby helped Sonny replace the fabric on his dirtbike seat.

Snow showers most of the day. Late afternoon had a short blizzard like snow which finally coated everything with a light dusting. Thankfully the roads were fine for the 2 who were working late.

Several packages came today. Always fun to open them and see what you got.

Stayed up late last night so didn't make it to the gym. Tried most of the late morning to try to get the ball rolling on getting infusions locally for my Mom but no success yet. Also trying to find a different hotel for the 6th in Atlanta because the Holiday Inn went up $35.

Picked up Mom's stronger pain med and the pharmacist wanted to talk and basically scared the crap out of me.

He recommended the inhaler for those that OD soon and especially when the doc increases her med. He said some people have a tendency to stop breathing.

I'll be keeping closer tabs on her.

Changing the subject, Mom couldn't make it tonight for the 25th anniversary performance of Riverdance so I took Josh. We had a wonderful time and he loved it!

Manna my 5HTP is 50 mg and I just took it for the second time. What mgs are you taking? I think I reacted so stronger to it because I was taking SamE at the same time. Hopefully it will be milder this time around.

Hiker you are an inspiration in the exercise department. Still hoping to make it to the gym and even with Mom's stronger med I should be OK to go in the early morning.

BB I hear you about depression. I was just talking with a friend yesterday about my lack of motivation possibly being depression. I'm already super anxious about my Mom. Hoping exercise will help both.

Hey guys, does reading about exercise count as exercise?

[lol]

Posted by Lymetoo (Member # 743) on :

AK... 5HTP is the same as Sam-e .. pretty much, if not exactly.

I'm sorry you are most likely depressed. It's certainly understandable.

I forgot to post that I walked 1/2 miles at the Rec Plex on Monday. I was kinda sore when I went to my regular exercise the next day.

Maybe it was because of the storm coming in the next day.

Did 21 min on two machines yesterday, 19 laps (1/2 mile) and arm cranks. (Plus warm up and cool down)

Today, I did diddly squat.

OH .. well .. I took a nap!!!

I meant to take some chicken out of the freezer before my nap, but forgot to. So, WHAT'S FOR DINNER??

Posted by hiker53 (Member # 6046) on :

Tutu—Way to go on the exercise. It is okay to miss a day here and there. I think the body needs a break (at least that is the excuse I give myself)

This morning I did my knee and feet exercises.

This afternoon I rode the exercise bike 20 minutes. Exceeded my 100 minute per week goal, so don’t have to ride it tomorrow.

Chatted with my mom for a long time.

Lay down for a 20 minute nap and woke up an hour later. Hope I can sleep tonight.

So, what is for dinner? I didn’t defrost anything, either, and the weather isn’t great so I don’t feel like going to pick something up.

That leaves store bought gluten free pizza and a spinach/lettuce salad topped with carrots, zucchini and strawberries.

Am wishing for chocolate but have none. My mom made her box of Fanny May chocolates last for a full month. I wouldn’t have that restraint.

Posted by aklnwlf (Member # 5960) on :

PT once so far for SI joint and shoulder. Mom has managed one. Started her on the low dose morphine and noticed how tired she is. Waited until 2 when she dozed off a bit to get some groceries.

She's been in bed since 5:15 so I washed my bedding and remade the bed. Chopped celery and onion to go in the dressing I'm making tomorrow. I'll top it with chicken thighs and bake it along with a green bean casserole. Have the salad stuff prepped too.

Josh is supposed to come over for dinner so I'm looking forward to his company.

Hey TuTu it was the SamE that caused the problem. 50 mg of 5HTP worked fine but it took awhile to fall asleep. Like it better than my sleeping pill though. I didn't drag along most of the day today.

Hiker I wish I had my old stair climber. It wasn't that large and it would've fit in the spare bedroom. Unfortunately I donated it to Goodwill when I went through my divorce because I thought I was going to move back to AK.

Might have to break out my Buns of Steel and Jane Fonda workout DVDs!

Leftovers from my BDay tonight, spinach/ricotta manicotti and a salad for dinner. I hope my Mom will eat her seafood pasta leftovers when she wakes up.

Plan on working on my round moon puzzle a bit. I'm enjoying the challenge.

[hi]

AK, I haven't taken any of the 5HTP yet this time because I didn't need it. Its 100 mgs. I don't recall what I used before -its been quite a few years ago. I just know I didn't like the melatonin!

Got all the wash folded and put away, except for a blanket that is still in the dryer.

Took some stale cookies and bead out to the chickens this afternoon. Climbed up the hill to the top corner of the chicken pasture for the exercise.

Cut more patches for the quilt I'm working on.

Salisbury steak, mashed potatoes and mixed vegetables for supper tonight.

Snow flurries this morning and part of the afternoon. Then the sun came out for the rest of the afternoon, but didn't warm up. Its 34* now.

Gotta go shut the chickens door and gather the eggs, then I'm going to go up to my sewing room.

Up at 8:00 to get more done but Mom didn't sleep well and wanted to take a shower. She asked me to set up her shower chair because she felt woozy but didn't need it.

Cleaned the bathroom and did 2 loads of laundry. All my food is prepped and ready to go in the oven.

I'm going to have to figure out what to do with my Mom's sleeping and eating schedule since she started the new med. She didn't want to eat dinner until 10:00 last night so it was a late night for me. I ate around 7:00 but by the time I did the dishes and her therapy it was 11:00.

Right now she's sleeping so might have to try and exercise while she's napping.

Manna I'm thinking about adding some GABA to the 5HTP. Takes me awhile to fall asleep but I'm sleeping pretty good. I feel better too and not as depressed.

See you all tomorrow!

I did a load of laundry this morning.

I did my balance and feet exercises plus my shoulder stretches.

Baked salmon, asparagus, and sweet potato for lunch.

Went to recycling bins at grocery store lot and dropped off library books in the drop box there.

Talked a long time with a friend on the east coast. Then my Wisconsin friend called and yakked. A lot of lip moving today!

Watching a bit of Illini basketball.

Just relaxing tonight. Expecting ice and snow. Ugh.

Need to go pack a bag to go to mom’s tomorrow assuming roads are okay.

Today we had an early lunch so the men could go look at a pick up that was for sale.

After lunch I cleaned out the smaller chicken pen and boarded up the little door over to the big pen. We caught all 10 roosters and penned them up. Hopefully there will be peace in the chicken house now... at least in the pen with all the hens!

Sonny helped the neighbor this afternoon.

One daughter cleaned the kitchen, dining room and living room.

The other daughter cleaned up the remains of a little shed she tore down last summer. Told the boys they can now saw down the trees shading the garden since the shed is out of the way.

Have a big burn pile ready to burn as soon as its not windy.

Made a few lemony things this evening. Lemon Garlic Hummas, Lemon Mousse, and Lemon Kisses.
