hey bettyg,, if you haev this problem you need to tell people what system you are using if it is XP you can go to start menu / all programs / accessories/ system tools / system restore and restore back to the time you know as a fact you had the address bar was working....

here are some more questions that may help to resolve and isolate this: Is it the browser window you are referring to or outlook express?
If it is the browser window then check to see in the right corner there should be a few icons listed there this is if you have updated your IE (only if you are using IE Explorer) to version 7 if you have not updated it will work better if you do so... http://www.microsoft.com/windows/downloads/ie/getitnow.mspx
If you click on tools check mark address bar (or menu bar in my case)
If it is outlook express it may be that the outlook express is contaminated I can send help on fixing that problem as well..
Always when working on computers the current version of what ever you are having a problem with and details of the problem are essential to resolving a problem.
What windows version you are using..( you said it is win98) I have my mother computer here which runs windows 98se very similar version so I can hook that up and see what you are talking about if I need to )
What program and what is happening?.. has it happened before this?
Have you recently installed a new software program?,(IE virus scanner, or any software program that you may have needed for a certain utility that was installed on your computer)
New hardware?, (IE cd rom drive hard drive, floppy drive usb or any other attached device) Some times on older versions of windows programs can corrupt other programs if you do not control/alt/del and end tasks on other programs before you install a new one careful doing this as you need basic programs to run your computer so don't stop running all programs. open the tesk manager by using control alt delete keys holding them down as you hit each on in that order. I would hold off on this one and check everything else first since this can cause a problem... go to processes then click on owner end tasks only on owner that are not needed before installing a new program.
You need to have system tray (sys tray) and explorer (explorer) need to be running the rest you can end.
Have you run a spyware removal utility? These two spyware are free and if you run them every week they will keep your problems to a minimum: Adaware SE by lavasoft download here : Click here for Adaware SE download when a window pops up click on save then save to desktop and double ckick on the icon to run once it is downloaded.
Many times problems are a result of not updating a software program since new viruses and spyware are constantly being created to impede the function of software programs. Updates are essential to maintaining and keeping a computer functioning properly.
on outlook express if you go to help and about outlook express it will show you the version you have on your computer.
same thing on Internet Explorer and other browsers and software programs. Click on help on the menu bar click on about "whatever the software program is that you want the information" a window will pop up and let you know what version of software program that you are running..
most every software program today has a help tab on the menu bar to obtain the version and date of the program. If not I would question whether the program is safe to run.
I hope this helps and maybe we can get you back to using your address/ menu bar..

Joe, I used my own method of html code to do what you wanted. thanks. I did not know this was causing a problem for people on the board. I have never run into a problem with long links, (other than people not including the whole link or cutting some portion of it off..)

linda, i started doing the things you've suggested ... not done yet!
i did the spy bot for 1st time; it found 42 red items which were deleted.
can't update windows 98 SE...forgot to add i do have SE! they don't have anything for it.
i'll work down thru your suggestions 1 at a time.

to find if you are running windows 98se or 98 you need to go into control panel from start menu and look for system icon( towards bottom of list).. double click on it and the pop up box you will stay in general tab and write down all you see listed there except registered to section.. submit here or via email to me..
it will say if it is windows 98 se or just windows 98 in that box on general tab..plus give me the naem of manufacturer and memory and cpu info I can more specifically research the issue for you then
Also you should be abel to update win98 and win98se.. I will see why you might not be able to..
what did the link say when you clicked on it? did it say something like you need to install something before running the update?
or like you must first turn on active x ?
I remember a warning about them no longer making updates and service available for anything before Xp, so they may have implimented this when Vista came out...
oh well I should be able to walk you through a solve if those dont fix the problem i was really hoping the update would help .. but there should be a restore folder in cabs folder that you can restore the registry from I would sooner fix a problem a more simoilar way than that way though.. I might get my moms computer out over the weekend and mess around with it for a bit see if I can make it go away and come back!.. LOL I am more versed on ME and XP... but I used to live on 98 and 98se.. I have forgotten so much.. l8r

NO, so far i haven't got it fixed, but i haven't tried everything you mentioned!
spybot caught 18 things there...
i've had so much going on and trying to get my act together to organize my FINAL printout on my wellmark/bcbs APPEAL on $3800 out of pocket expenses, and ALL my attachments of ALL phone calls since 3-06, and finally ALL DENIED EXPLANATION OF BENEFITS! big uffda.
worked 2.5 hrs. solid the other day until i was worn out; proofread another night what i had gathered, and what STILL needs to be done.
i'm just so tired. last night i fell asleep on internet/lymenet for at least a good hr. when hubby woke up and told me to go to bed then i physicially woke up but i'd worn out my welcome near the side of bed he sleeps! my typing on keys especially space bars drives him up the walls.
i do hope to come back later after 3 more deadlines of getting things done and on their way though.

I only come on here anymore once and a while or just when I check on my email .. I was seriously addicted to this board once.. but I find that I got too emotional when I sit at it all the time and find it harder to break away if I don't cut myself off .. besides my back pain warns me that I have to get off and I have to listen or I pay dearly..
BTW the fire is within 10 miles of our home.. and stil wayout of control. we are far from being safe,,,, it is a "sit and wait to see "..what way the wind blows and how fast it does whether or not we will be evacuated ..
but as they szy " watched pot never boils", so as far as I'm concerned we are most likely safe...'
I have found a house in gaston SC but I will have to borrow 1500.00 or hit the lotery in order to close with in 2 months because we need to clear the money wwe put on credit to get the debt ot income ratio in place....
I love this stuff ..
putting this house on the market in 2 weeks but not likely that it will sell in time to close on the gaston property.... besides we may not have a home to sell by then either I have to consider what may happen here..but I make my plans as I would regardless. I asked a dear friend of mine if he may be able to assist in getting us to safety.. he will if he can. but if not we are sitting ducks.. LOL

for creating a screen shot or snap shot you would do this:
first open microsoft word doc
then open the program which is causing you to have the lost bar
while that windows is open hold the cntrl key down and then press the print scr key located on your key board to the right of the functions keys (f1 - f12) (this was for those who do not know what a function key is, in case anyone else wants to give this a try)
now go to the blank microsoft word doc and place your mouse cursor over the blank page and left click to be certain you are on the page
now
right click and then select paste (in order to select paste you need to left click on paste) you should now see a picture of the window that you are having trouble with. go to "FILE" and "SAVE AS" and type in the name that you want to call it and make certain you "save in" the place where you want it to go I usually put them in a folder in "my documnets" and call it "snap shots".
you can then attach this to an email and send it to me so that I can visualize what your problem is.. [email protected]
If you do not know how to attach an outlook express attachment: open Outlook Expres Click on "NEW EMAIL" on the new email you will address to whom you are sending the article then left click on "insert" and left click on "file attachment" then find the file from where you placed the article you want to send..
if you have trouble with this, I will send you a step by step to clear the process up via email using the snap shot method.. just let me know.. Linda

whoopie! finally got my address line back after almost 2 full months!
my cousin stopped today, and i showed her my problem ... we fixed it in ONE minute and i spent hours working on this!!
went to the line of tools, and RIGHT clicked on area with no named subjects.
it brought up 4 choices including address line; it was marked;
we then UNLOCKED IT, and she moved the address name slightly to left, and it went into its proper spot!
then we LOCKED it up again so it doesn't disappear! boy, have i missed that feature!
she helped on another problem in 5 minutes, so her out of state visit was most welcome for the 1 hr. she was here.
