My friend has lost her job and has moved in with me with her cats. I'm allergic to them and am wondering whether there is any good treatment for allergies.

Any ideas?

I would have her find another home for her cats as long as she's with you.

It depends on how allergic you are. If you only have minor symptoms like itchy eyes, runny nose, and sneezing then you may develop a tolerance to the cats.

If you have severe symptoms like difficulty breathing, wheezing, throat swelling, then you probably should not be around the cats. Allergy shots can help but that takes time, not an immediate effect.

If your symptoms are minor you can take OTC Zyrtec (generic: certirizine). You will also need to have your friend vacuum the house daily and the furniture daily. That will help remove the hair and the dander to help reduce your exposure. Keep your bedroom door shut so that the cats don't sleep on your bed. If you pet the cats, wash your hands immediately and don't touch your face.

If you can afford it, buy a hepa room filter. Keep it running in whatever room you spend the most time in.

Good luck. I hope it works out for you and your friend.

Restrict the cats to part of the house, so at least you have a safe haven, so to speak.

Claritin may be a better (or at least cheaper) option that zyrtec, but I find antihistamines vary a lot by person. Just pick whatever works best for you without making you insanely tired. Benadryl works great for me, for instance, but I can rarely use it, since it'll turn me into a zombie.

Nasalcrom is a good OTC nasal inhaler to consider. No steroids, but it takes about 3 weeks to kick in.

And a hepa filter isn't a bad idea either. I have two rabbit airs and I like them.

I rifed today and my sinuses cleared up so we'll see whether that is effective in the long run.
