I have gotten so much great advice on this site. I do feel like I need someone though to look at all my info and give me a step by step plan for detox.

I am just too limited in my knowledge and truthfully have been so focused on health stuff that I am getting behind in other areas of life.

Who advised you on your detox plan? A LLMD? Natruopath dr.? acupuncturist? herbalist? someone else?

Anyone know anybody good in the Albany NY area (or w/in an hour drive)?

I am hoping maybe my naturopathic dr. can help me (only met him once) but wasn't sure if there is someone else that I am overlooking who may be an expert in this area that I could access somehow?

I am getting my amalgams removed today and working on getting my candida under control. I will need to focus on heavy metals next, but really need more guidance.

I don't know what many of these herbs are or how much to take and how to combine in w/ other supplements I am on (and what I should stop taking when I address heavy metals). It is all very overwhelming.

The info though that I have gotten on this site will be great to reference but need someone to get me started and really explain to me how this all works. Thanks for any advice on who to turn to!

I'd go with a Naturopath or Integrative MD.

Thanks! Do many of you who detox just do your own research and put something together?

If yes, how do you monitor progress (i.e. do you re test for heavy metals or candida) or do you base improvement on symptoms?

Do any of you meet w/ a med professional to come up w/ a protocol to follow and tweak as necessary?

I just can't see myself experimenting w/ herbs/supplements w/out guidance. I just don't have the time to really research all the options. Got my amalgams out today so ready for the next step!

Hi Anna

Here is a book that might offer you some guidance, based on which you can also ask your doctor questions, suited to your particular needs.

Healthy Healing by Linda REctor Page, ND

This is the reference book in most healthfood stores nation wide.

It contains questionnaires: How to know if you need heavy metal cleansing, if you need liver cleansing, kidney, lymph, etc....based on the scores you test with by filling out the questionnaries, you know whether or not it's the right thing to do, for you.

That might help give you some pointers, based on which you can ask your doctor questions.

It also is a really handy book to have around at home. In a one-page bullet point, quick-glance format, you can look up natural remedies for so many ailments, kid's stuff too. Lots of nutritional and herbal and detox info.

To answer your questions:

Light detoxing with a very healthy body probably doesn't usually require a doc's intervention. Heavy duty detoxing, or detoxing with special needs present, requires an ND that would be my recommendation.

An acupuncturist could help you too.

As for detoxing heavy metals, my acupuncturist suggested that the Metalloclear by Metagenics (at www.iherb.com or www.vitacost.com, check them out to see who carries it) is the best one to use. It is designed by an NIH researcher/doctor and raises liver enzymes that help to break down the metals. This is very important, to protect your body from re-exposure. Just as important, it also pulls the metals out *slowly* which is also important to protecting you from re-exposure, and helping your body to better deal with the load it has on its hands while the metals are pulled out of your cells.

It is *not* at all advisable to detox from heavy metals if leaky gut syndrome exists. You can read about this in the booklet Leaky Gut Syndrome by Elizabeth Lipski, CCN MS very important!!

To detox from heavy metals with leaky gut is to invite auto-immune attack and much worse toxicity than before.

People need to be aware of that.

An ND can determine if you have leaky gut. See also Elizabeth Lipski's booklet, it describes the many varying symptoms, the physiology, and the remedy but is short and a lay-friendly read. Excellently described too.

Usually there would be a combination of auto-immune symptoms plus digestive issues if you have leaky gut. I am not a doctor and can't give any more specifics.

To follow up amalgam removal, I might be taking....

apple pectin to bind with any metals in the gut, pull them out

Lots and lots of vitamin C to tolerance level. I like the Healthforce Nutritionals Truly Natural Vitamin C. THis is acerola cherry powder and is much more gentle on your system than the isolated constituent, at least in my humble layperson's opinion.

Chlorella to bind with and remove metals, take separately from meds and from vitamin C. Can be taken very beneficially together with fish oils, writes Dr K.

Best wishes, CI

Hi Anna! I hesitate to post as I feel like the blind leading the blind but I take A LOT of supplements and have found what works for me without the help of a dr.

I'll add a disclaimer that Chiquita Incognita has been a wealth of info for me and has taught me so much over the last few weeks.

Most of the stuff she recommended for detoxing, I am on (only I use a different brand) she just explained a bit more WHY it's working.

I started with my symptoms and added herbs one at a time. I started seeing drs last september and went through 4 before I found my current lyme doc. They each ran blood work so I was able to "play with" different herbal concoctions and see how it was effecting me through bloodwork without them even knowing (they all discouraged any type of supplements, boo hiss)

For example, my liver enzymes were off a bit. So I started a liver detox/strengthener, the following labs came back normal so I had my proof that is was working.

My lyme/co sypmtoms are fatigue, muscle cramps/weakness, tingling/numbness, memory issues, headaches, etc... so I take the supplements to support those particular systems in my body (magnesium, CoQ10, fish oils, ginko biloba, vit b to name a few)

I finally got the lyme diagnosis and started abx treatment about 5 weeks ago and the herxing was unbearable. So I started detox my lymph system with a lymph gland cleanse and got relief so my body told me it was working.

I've tried a few that made me jittery, so I quit. I've also ran out of a couple and within a three days my pain increased noticeably and within 2 days of getting it back in my system I felt better. That's how I "listen" to my body. If I feel better on it, I add it to my list, if not then I quit taking it.
The brand of herbs that I use have a lot of formulas that have a mixture of herbs. For example the lymph gland cleanse is named just that and it has Parthenium root, yarrow flowers,Myrrh gum,Capsicum fruit. Fortunately for me my mother-in-law owns an herbal shop (wish that meant I got them cheaper!!) but I can go there and read labels and then go home and investigate for myself.

I think detoxing is a huge part of our recovery but supporting the systems that are being overloaded is equally important.

Good luck, I hope this isn't discouraging... it takes time but it's worth it to feel your body getting stronger and know you're doing something to help yourself.

I don't know that there's an easy route to finding what works for you. I don't know if it's because they aren't "evaluated by the FDA" drs hesitate to prescribe them. What works for one person doesn't always work for another. Yet they have no hesitation prescibing poison that IS evaluated by the FDA, where's the logic in that?!

Thank you!!! Very helpful info! I had a first appt w/ a ND recently so just left him a message to let him know I had my amalgams removed and asked him to get back to me about detoxing.

I didn't realize some of what i am already doing is some form of detoxing (w/ all the supplements I am on inc--COQ10, magnesium, lyme TF, multi immune TF, andographis, K-PAX, liquid complex B, vitamin D, vitamin C, probiotics, omega 3, milk thistle, C-Away).

I will check out some of the resources listed. Thank you all for your time!
