(not to be confused w/B. duncani)

It's typically found in horses and cattle, but there have been some spotty reports of it in humans as well.

I know where one could get a blood smear done for this, but don't know where one could get a titration/WB/PCR done. Anyone have info?

Thanks!

Dawn,

My suggestion -- pretty sure it is included in the species PCR test done by Clongen. I would call Dr K to confirm.

My suggestion would be to pay the extra $135 for the culture enrichment medium and then to have the lab do a fingerstick to get the blood to add to the test tube instead of doing a regular blood draw from the vein. The lab sends a test tube with the culture medium already added to it.

If the species PCR comes back positive then the lab will call you and ask if you want to have them do additional testing to identify the species. Not sure what the additional charge for that would be.

Also not sure how much insurance will pay on the tests as hubby's has not been processed yet.

I owe you an email and will try to get that sent tomorrow. High fever #3 (103.3) occurred Friday night and as usual no one can say if it was from babesia die-off or another reason.

Hubby's PICC line was finally pulled and surprise surprise -- so far the preliminary cultures from both the PICC line and his other arm are both negative. We are eagerly waiting for the ER and hospital bloodwork tomorrow to see if there may have been another red blood cell die-off.

I did talk to hubby's new LLMD briefly by cell phone at 8:00 pm Friday night so so far she is looking like a very good choice.
