can it be cut in half...and if so, can i give him 1/2 pill before school and then the other 1/2 maybe 3hrs later to prevent stomach upset at school?

current dose is 100mg twice daily

Usually the only pills you can cut is if they are already scoured. With doxy I don't think that it is able to be cut in half.

Does he take it with food in the middle of a meal?

They do make a 50mg tablet. I would think that you could cut it in half. Maybe call a pharmacy to ask?

Is it a coated tablet?

taking it right after meal..he's NOT a big eater so I'm forcing him to eat to cover for the pill.

thought maybe for a day or two to cut it and start off slowly...

skipping dose tonight to ease stomach and will start tomorrow.. Pharmacy said yes to cutting it, so we'll try that method tomorrow!

If you can get him to eat some sort of carb and protein with it, that will really help too.

My son says that he finds it easier to tolerate if he drinks a full glass of water when taking it and I also give him a ginger root capsule to take with it.

I always had to take ginger root capsules with it or it really tore up my stomach.

I hope he feels better.

Not recommended or maybe

If the pills you have are orange and tan it's a good chance they are a bi-layer tablet (provided it isn't just gel dipped). If you don't know which half contains the active and which half contains the inactive ingredients then you will either give the full dose of doxy or a full dose of nothing.

If it's a round small tablet with top orange and bottom tan then it is definately bi-layer.

That being said if you cut it exactly in half and end up with orange and tan on both halves the you are good to go with half the dosage.

Did you try giving it to him with some crackers so his stomach wouldn't get upset? It is ok to do that as long as you don't give him any dairy or antacids with it. Those will keep the doxy from being absorbed properly.

He also should not lie down for an hour or so after taking doxy.

Hope this helps.......Do not take this as medical advice, just an opinion

The pills we have are
orange and imprinted with ww112

don't know if these are bi-layer ones?
pill is completely the same orange color top and bottom.

pharmacy said yes...but just double and tripple checking for accuracy!!

Oh sorry Jenn I thought you meant orange one side and tan on the other.

Should not be an issue at all. Even the bi-layer like I mentioned is ok so long as it's cut in half the correct way. lol

And please don't ask me how I know this [Wink]
