Hello: The hardest part of this disease, for me anyway, has been the inability to connect with others emotionally. Can't make new friends, have a lover, etc.
Does anyone know of any supplements that help with this awful, awful symptom?? Thank you so much, and God Bless.

I know this is going to be one of those "much easier said than done" types of things but one of the first things we have to do when dealing with depersonalization is just accept the fact that it is there.
The way our nervous systems work is really rather fascinating if you think about it. By wanting so badly to get rid of these feelings, we actually contribute to their sticking around. It is the body's defense mechanism in dealing with stress and further stressing about the situation only adds more tension/stress to an already overtaxed system.
This is your body's way of saying hey...you need to slow down. So try to think of it as protection. The body cannot handle any more stress at this time, so what does it do? It gives you these feelings of depersonalization/derealization in an attempt to protect the brain from further harm.
We all experience a great deal of stress in dealing with this disease...whether we realize it or not. Our bodies are going to do what they have to do, any way that they can to help alleviate some of that stress.
Another thing that bring on feelings of DP/DR is not getting adequate sleep or being overly tired which happens with many of us with lyme.
I *think* that what may go on with lyme sufferers is either 1....our worry or fear of the unknown in dealing with this illness contributes to the problem. Meaning...if we are in a constant state of fear (even if that fear is minimal) it is going to have an effect on how our brain functions and transmits signals. Even the slightest sense of danger will cause our bodies to go into protection mode. It is that fight or flight response and the body will suppress non-emergency functions which in turn affects how the brain functions. It causes the area responsible for fear to be in a heightened state, while causing other areas of the brain to take a lesser role. The brain basically goes into survival mode.
We like to think of the fight or flight response as being activated with something more dramatic but this is not always the case. Simply living in fear about the unknown of the lyme disease...or even over worrying about the DP/DR symptoms can contribute to the body staying in this state.
2...The other thing that is probably contributing to this problem is the infection in the brain itself which should get better with abx. As for supplements, I'm not sure.
I dealt with feelings of DP/DR 24/7 for almost a year prior to being diagnosed with lyme. For me, much of the problem dealt with my reaction to it.
Please understand, I'm not in any way trying to minimize what you are going through and I'm not saying that you are the cause of the problem. But I do think that the way we react to it has an impact. For me, it was a huge part of the problem! I still have episodes of DP/DR but I just try not to worry about it anymore. It comes and goes and I haven't really pinpointed any pattern to it. It used to really freak me out but I worked with a therapist for months to get to the point of not living in a dream world 24/7.
I hope someone else can come along and offer some supplemental suggestions. In the meantime, just try to think about what I stated above.
Another thing may be to test some hormone levels. Over-stimulation of the stress hormones can/will contribute to feelings of DP/DR. Maybe get a saliva test to see what is going on with the adrenals? Those with adrenal problems also experience DP/DR.
Good luck!

There is some weak evidence that TAO Cat's Claw may protect the body and possibly the brain from the toxic effects of Lyme. I think this is what leads to many of the mental and some physical problems of the disease.
It is not always the bacteria itself causing symptoms, but the toxins that are involved with it and how the individual responds to them.
