It also appears as though phenylbutyrate may be useful in the treatment of chronic infections.

Phenylbutyrate Induces Antimicrobial Peptide Expression

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2786349/

"Our findings contribute to understanding of the regulation of AMP expression and suggest that phenylbutyrate (PBA) and/or ST7 is a promising drug candidate for treatment of microbial infections by strengthening the epithelial antimicrobial barriers. "

Phenylbutyrate in the treatment of Epstein Barr

Is Phenylbutyrate useful in the treatment of HIV??

Phenylbutyrate is an HDAC inhibitor and HDAC inhibitors seem to have potent anti-malarial properties.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19355992

So, phenylbutyrate may be an effective treatment for malaria and possibly babesia.

Sodium phenylbutyrate may also be useful in the treatment of cancer.
