So we know there's the Schardt protocol which uses Diflucan to treat lyme. Just was doing a little research and found the following:

"Fluconazole kills the fungi that are causing an infection by interfering with their cell membranes. It works by stopping the fungi from producing a substance called ergosterol, which is an essential component of fungal cell membranes. The disruption in production of ergosterol causes holes to appear in the fungal cell membrane.

The cell membranes of fungi are vital for their survival. They keep unwanted substances from entering the cells and stop the contents of the cells from leaking out. As fluconazole causes holes to appear in the cell membranes, essential constituents of the fungal cells can leak out. This kills the fungi and treats the infection."

Gotta wonder if this applies to BB also? Any of you biologists out there care to weigh in?

Is this related too? (should have paid more attention in biology classes years ago!!!)

"Sterol glycosides have only rarely been reported from organisms other than plants, although cholesteryl glucoside has been found in a few animal tissues and some bacteria, such as the gram-negative bacterium Helicobacter pylori and Borrelia burgdorferi, the causative agent of Lyme disease."

My hypothesis/question is whether the diflucan is affecting the BB via the same mechanism that it does fungi? In other words, is it attacking BB's cell membrane in the same manner that it successfully attacks that of fungi? Again, not being a biologist, does the second article imply that these same ergosterol-based cell membranes are present in BB? (Could be totally off here!!! [Smile]

Diflucan:
Interfere with ergosterol synthesis (via P450 enzyme)

Tx: superficial and systemic fungal infxns, cryptococcal meningitis NOT aspergillosis

*inhibits CYP3A4

Dr. P did a presentation of ...'zoles in the treatment of Lyme at one of the ILADS conferences yrs ago.

I LOVE Diflucan (on it now)wether my problem is yeast or not now. When he put me on it w/mino back in 2005 ...I felt the best.

My llmd tells me it attacks the cyst form and also passes the blood brain barrier. I was skeptical but it seems to be working for me
