Went to bed last night worried that it was the first night in almost 8 years since this Lyme event began that I didn't have am Ambien to take..I actually thought the worst that could happen was that I wouldn't be able to sleep and was surprised that I didn't have any lower back and hip pain when I got I to bed....have been feeling generally better over the 8 years...
I did take cyclobenzaprine & dicoflenac as usual ( muscle relaxer & anti inflammatory )
I woke up 3 hours later in a drenching sweat from awful anxiety nightmares - reminiscent of 7.5 years ago... alternating with chills...as I tossed and turned I noticed the back pain was getting worse...my lower back not only hurt but was "buzzing" like it did almost every day back then...
I took an aleve and wondered if I had taken an Ambien if this would have happened
Then I remembered that I had had take out Chinese food for dinner and wondered if it could be MSG? I seem to recall a bad night the last time I ate Chinese food...
Then I noticed that the tooth I'd had a root canal done on Thursday was still evidencing the symptomology that I'd had the root canal to correct. ...but that was nothing compared to the buzzing and pain in the lower back
Sorry if this post is long and confusing ... Just trying to put the pieces together to figure out why I had such a bad night and feeling the way I do today...

most likely benzo withdrawal. i went through the same thing. best thing to do is to titrate those ambien and taper off. i had incredible pain in back and internally while taking them for years.
i also had my first dreams(nightmares)after getting off of them after not having any in years.
its completely normal.

"Ambien (zolpidem tartrate) is a non-benzodiazepine hypnotic of the imidazopyridine class"
Since ambien is considered a hypnotic sleep med, I wonder if you are having these symptoms every now and then and just don't remember them in the morning?
Also, it could be that you are so used to sleeping with Ambien that your body could not get restful sleep without it. So maybe all sense of pain, anxiety, and even time might have been exaggerated. This seems to be true for me when I can't sleep...
These are just thoughts, I have no real medical explanation. I'm not a doctor.
Sorry you had such a bad night DanP. Hopefully you will get some better sleep tonight. Take care
