Have any of you noticed a major increase in wrinkles around your mouth and cheeks (smile lines) since becoming ill? I have major wrinkles appearing out of nowhere and fast. I noticed it a little after my trigeminal neuralgia two years ago but now it's getting worse. Is this connected to lyme? If any of you can relate, did you find lyme treatment helped...or anything else that helped? I know it sounds shallow but it just adds to my depression when I see these wrinkles getting worse every day.

Losing weight and dehydration can cause your skin to look more wrinkled. Do you think that this might be part of the cause for you?
For example, look at the movie stars. Many of them go through phases where they loose too much weight and look anorexic. It makes them look much older than they are. When they are a healthy weight they look younger and prettier (in my opinion).
Just wanting you to look at the skin of the movie stars, nothing else. They are not healthy because of life style choices. We did not choose Lyme.

I have lost weight but only about ten pounds over the past few years. I'm always drinking water but my doctor said I'm not absorbing all my nutrients. Maybe that's why. Anyway, I wish I were weird like you Lymetutu and didn't have this problem. I'm 48 and never had a problem until abruptly two years ago.

Wow, that is unusual. Sure makes you wonder about Lyme being the cause, doesn't it?
I do look older now that I've lost more weight. Or is it just the age... grrr.

Yep....look at least 15 years older since becoming sick and very thin. I am 49 and this has been one of the absolute worse side effects for me....a real bummer!

I have noticed an increase in age spots on my hands and arms.
I think since Lyme messes with your hormones you can get some premature aging stuff.
I also think I may have a parathyroid issue that is messing with my hormones. My ND recently muscle tested me and came back with parathyroidites. The symptoms are similar to many of the Lyme symptoms so there was no way for me to know.
I will see my GP about it later this month.
So Lyme could be causing the lines if the right hormones are not being made and used appropriately. I supplement with Testosterone and still am below normal. So it is like the Lyme is running around and playing with my hormone control knobs.
All the Best, MattH

Definitely have this. Can't stand it.
I recently started asanxathin (spelled wrong I'm sure) to see if that helped. Supposedly helps with age spots too.

When I had undiagnosed lyme disease, this happened to me.
I got these deep lines on either side of my mouth. If someone took a picture of me unaware, I looked like I was scowling.
I was given the misdiagnosis of menopause, so I thought these lines were the result of menopause. (I was in my 40s)
Nope. It turns out that this was all caused by lyme. It is called "facial drooping." It is a mild form of bilateral (both sides of the face) bells palsy.
Before I was even diagnosed with lyme, one day I woke up and the lines were gone. I had had them for 3 years! They just disappeared, just like they came.
Once I learned about lyme, I figured out what had happened to me. In the beginning when I first got the lines, I remember saying that it felt like my face was being pulled down by gravity.
It was so bad that I and my husband considered getting me a face lift.
So, take heart! It can go away just like it came. And, hopefully, if you are on good lyme treatment, it will go away quicker than mine did without any treatment.

I have this (deep lines around mouth that came out of nowhere 2 years ago), I am mid-forties and look much older. Interesting TF I never thought of Bells Palsy, I just thought all the weight I lost and being ill was the problem. I can't stand them but since I have MCS would never consider fillers.

Here are just a couple of non-lyme sites that refer to this:
First know that bilateral bell's palsy is rare. Most doctors will only see one case of it in their lifetime, based on what I read.
I have read in lyme literature that a mild bilateral bell's palsy (known as facial drooping) is nearly always lyme disease. One lyme doctor noticed the deep lines on either side of the mouths of his lyme patients and watched them disappear with treatment. Many of these patients said they had had these lines all of their adult lives.
This doc says that these lines are a symptom of lyme disease and should not be considered normal in a patient with lyme disease.
Wish I could find the reference to this. I used to have it as a favorite, but doesn't seem like I do anymore.
Here is a good article that mentions bilateral bp also, but it won't let me copy the section. You will have to pull up the document and search for the word"bilateral."

RZR,
What's a dermal filler?
I just have regular old wrinkles. Lost a bunch of weight coming off Klonopin and my face has not recovered yet.
Probably never will.

That is encouraging TF. I've had such a rotten day. Maybe I'll wake up in the morning and the lines will be gone! That would give me a little lift. I'm so weary of this illness. I had a pretty good day yesterday. Last night didn't sleep well at all and have felt so crappy and depressed today.

There are several fillers...Juvaderm, Restylane, Radiesse. Problem is, most only last up to a year. I had a consult months ago and needed 3 syringes, which which cost nearly $2,000.

Do the fillers make you look strange, like some people do after botox or a face lift?

I feel like I look like I aged a bit recently also. Have dropped 12-14lbs since Thanksgiving, so I think that's the reason. Am trying to gain it back, but it's not working (yet).
I've been doing oilpulling also and that seems to exaggerate those verticle lines by the lips as soon as I'm done. Then it fades away after a few minutes (Thank God!). I hope it continues to fade away and doesn't decide to stick around one of these days.
I'm not thrilled with this aging thing. When I look in the mirror and see that I look good, it gives me a lift. On the days I look worn and sick and tired, well down the drain I go. It all works together.

Buhner says in his Lyme book, that Lyme lives off collagen in the body. It's their favorite food. It's important to repair damage with Vit C, Glucosamine and a few more things he mentions. Can't remember all of it.

RZR, Did you get the fillers? My wrinkles get worse at different times throughout the month. They're bad today and my hair is thinning. I use to be pretty and look young for my age three years ago. Now I feel like an old hag. TF, I keep hoping I'll wake up and the wrinkles will be gone, like you. No such luck though so far.

- My foot doctor recommended Certo (apple pectin used for canning) .. like Knox gelatin, except that it's pectin, not made from horses' hooves! (ick)
It is reported to add collagen. I decided not to try it because I'm very sensitive to citric acid.

Yes, I did get the dermal filler....Juvederm. It made a difference, but not as much as I hoped. I still have lines, but just not as deep as before. It's expensive and will only last around 9 months to a year. Not sure if I would pay $1,000 to do it again.

RZR,
Was it painful?
Went to the dermatologist for my yearly mole check.
She gave me a script for some Retin A to use. She says it does a pretty good job of improving the wrinkles that aren't too deep.
She said the over the counter kind didn't work all that well; you need the prescription kind.
Guess I will try it and see...

I will take a few wrinkles any day, having suffered from Bells Palsy for several years early Lyme.
My favorite definitely is Hyaluronic Acid squirted in the mouth or on the skin! It works very nicely!

Hmmm...a little painful but nothing compared to lyme & co. Doc numbed the area with ice and that's it. It only lasted a few minutes...3 injection sites each side.
It looks much better but I still don't look as young as I would like. Maybe I needed more Juvederm syringes, but I didn't want to go bankrupt trying to fill my face up! lol!

What brand and where do you buy the Hyaluronic Acid? Why does squirting in the mouth do for wrinkles?

Mine were not fine lines. They were deep folds that needed filler....think from weight loss. I think botox helps fine lines, but I am afraid to try that right now.

Hyaluronic acid is available also in capsules.
I buy the liquid from Biopureus. I have also bought the liquid for joints, face, etc. from Swansons Vitamins. Many of the good companies carry it.
It is a collagen builder. Google it and you will find more explanations.
Take care.

Bringing back an old thread. I am there....the wrinkles. Actually only on the forehead. Hate them.
I asked my dermatologist about fillers but she said the forehead requires Botox. I said no thank you.
I can't imagine injecting a neurotoxin. Yet I read that lyme patients use Botox for body pain and migraine pain. Has anyone used it purely for cosmetic reasons on the face? Hate these wrinkles!!!
