- I've never heard of that. Do you recall where you heard that / who said it?
Two of the top celiac sites that can answer many questions:

- Not sure of the expertise of these sources here but there are a few hits from a Google search of:
coffee, gluten, cross-reactive
If so, of course, the question is what exactly does "cross-reactive" mean?
A quirky glitch in testing? Intrinsic? Or contaminated?
Always more to learn, eh? Please let us know what else you might discover about this puzzle. -

I read a good source weeks/months ago, but I don't remember now.
For SOME people with celiac, their immune system also reacts to coffee, because for some reason, the protein/substance is similar to gluten.
I want to say it was for 10% or so of celiacs - certainly not all or most of them.
The recommendation was that if you have been follwing a gluten free diet for a while and weren't seeing improvements, try dropping coffee.

Yes Garden, it was something along those lines. I think Bea Seibert mentioned it on here too. Hopefully she'll chime in.

Hmmm I have Celiac and have no problems with coffee at all.
I have heard that some flavored coffee might be suspected to contain gluten but I don't know how reliable that is.
I don't even think coffee beans have protein in them...
It could just be that its acidic and many Celiac patients have trouble tolerating it due to GI symptoms, maybe? But def not an auto-immune reaction in my opinion.

Um, yes, coffee beans have protein in them. I have antibodies to coffee that show up on blood tests.
