My non-lyme specialist, but fine holistic doc, is having me do a hormone test. He says he's had many patients with adrenal problems take low-dose hydrocortisone and they got their life back by getting more energy. He prescribes that, depending on results of the test.
Reading about this, it does say it can lower the immune function and is a corticosteroid. It makes me think this is probably a no-no for those with lyme, but wanted to check in on what others know about it and hear from other docs about it.
My pendulum at the moment reacts strongly to it, but not in a good way, suggesting it would be excellent to stay away from. But, I do energy test for thyroid hormone, and I know these issues intertwine, and am at least considering the possibility that with better thyroid function (or with thyroid hormones), the hydrocortisone could make sense.
Were you suggesting cortef is natural? If so, in what way do you consider it natural? Another question I am trying to figure out, is what source it comes from, how it is made.

You could try natural stuff if you wanted to. I've been taking 10mg of cortef for about 10-12 yrs. My LLMD prescribed it.
Take a look at The Hormone Solution by Thierry Hertoghe.

Actually just starting to read Thyroid Power book and some others, but perhaps I'll get to that later.
Cortef is simply a brand name for hydrocortisone, so sounds like at least one LLMD approves of its use. Hard to keep each person's situation straight, but if you've been on it that long, it was prescribed to you when you were known to have active lyme?
It is an antiinflamatory and immunosuppressant.

Yes, I have heard of some lyme docs using this, at what they call a physiologic dose, which is very low.

Yes, I was in treatment for Lyme. I believe TF mentioned yesterday that Dr S says you cannot get well if you have low adrenal function.
I began treatment for Lyme in Aug 2000. I was treated for 4 yrs.
My LLMD said I could take up to 30mg a day, but I try to keep it as low as possible. He said our bodies are SUPPOSED TO make 30 mg a day for us.

Please read "Safe uses of cortisol" by Dr jeffries and check out the adrenals section of www.stopthethyroidmadness.com
Low doses can safely be used and people report major improvements. You can't treat thyroid without adrenal support, most docs just don't get that.
