I recently got back from the mainland where I saw an LLMD and was diagnosed with lyme, bartonella and erlichia. The doctor prescribed Rifampin 300 mg twice a day and Zithromax 250 mg twice a day. I have not yet started them because truthfully I am scared out of my mind about an allergic reaction and my allergist is out of town.

However, since yesterday I started to feel my head full and itchy in my face and scalp. I felt anxious and a weird sensation in my upper throat - not a lump or anything just a weird sensation. I didn't sleep well last night because of how I felt and today was worse. I feel the itchiness in my face and scalp, my eyes are burning, my upper throat burns, I feel very tired and sleepy and my muscles feel tight. I am not on any medication. I just took a xanax to help with the anxiety. But what is this? A herx, symptoms of the disease or what

Please give me your input. I am frustrated and scared right about now and I don't know what to do to feel better.

Thank you for taking the time to read this and I really would appreciate your input.

Do you tend to have allergies? Not sure why you would be afraid of this in connection with the meds.

I have been eating lots of greens (spinach, watercress, lettuce, arugula) with chicken or beef. But in the past few weeks I have been eating sweets here and there.

Yes I tend to have allergies and since getting lyme by system feels poisoned and like any minute its going to overload.

Are meds the only way to cause a herx? Can you die from a herx?

OK... no NO MEDS yet .. right??

I would suspect candida/yeast then. You may also need to figure out if you may be allergic to chicken or beef or some of the other foods you've been eating.

Dying from a herx would only happen if you were COMPLETELY IGNORING signals from your body.

Look into quercitan for allergies.
You can check iHerb.com for products and reviews.

Keep liquid Benedryl on hand for allergic reactions.

If you have anxiety as a regular symptom, see this post about supplementing magnesium

Thank you all. So I am thinking from your responses that itcy face, scalp and throat are not really lyme symptoms but more from candida, anxiety and/or allergy.

I will get allergy testing done. I did at home saliva test and I do seem to have candida. So I will work on that as well.
I will also check out the quercitan.

So, if you suspect candida, you need to start taking some probiotics right away!! Go to a local health food store for the fresh variety (refrigerated), but any drug store will have freeze dried capsules that are definitely better than nothing!

Also, it should go without saying - avoid any and all sugar.

Hope you feel better soon!

Do you have a prescription for any anti-fungal, like diflucan or nystatin? With a really bad case of yeast, it may take better diet (low carb)without sweets, probiotics, and anti-fungal. If no prescription, there are over the counter things like grapefruit seed extract (health food store) that work against yeast.

People with lyme do tend to develop more allergies, something to do with immune system lashing out against lyme ineffectively.

Messa the at home saliva test is where you take a clear glass and fill it with water. In the morning when you wake up first thing spit in the glass and see what happens within the 15 - 30 minutes. If the saliva floats on top with finger like tenticles downward (gross I know) or if it sinks to the bottom and you can still see the saliva you probably have yeast. Google saliva test for yeast and it will give you pictures of what you are too look for.

The only drawback to the saliva test is that you could have intestinal yeast and no thrush, so the test could be "negative" and you might still have a big problem brewing.
