First full week of meds starting this week.

I was on Flagyl all weekend, took Diflucan last night. This morning took 2 Doxys before leaving for work - first time I've taken Doxy.

Once I got to work (30-45 min) - I am so sick. Throwing up, freezing (it's 76 in my office, no reason to be cold), shivering, weak legs.

Is this a reaction to Doxy? I'm supposed to take 2 twice a day. If I spread the 4 pills out during the day is that okay and maybe not get sick? Not doing any good if I can't keep them down.

I've had the same reaction and usually it's because I didn't eat enough with doxy. Did you eat a lot of food with it?

When I was having a tough time, my LLMD had me start with 1 pill two times a day and then increase to 2 pills 2x per day as soon as my stomach could handle it. It did get better. It took a while but I had no stomach issues from taking it after a few weeks. They all went away.

thank you Summer3

My instructions say take 1 hr before eating or 2 hrs after eating. Figured first thing in the morning before eating breakfast would be good.

Doxy is one that you shouldn't take on an empty stomach according to most LLMD's. It can really do some serious damage. Did you ask your LLMD about taking it with food?

Usually with the meds and warnings that come with them, it's better to get instructions directly from your LLMD because the standard pharmacy warnings are not meant for people who are taking abx long-term like we are for Lyme.

Here's where I told you that you have to take doxy in the MIDDLE of a meal regardless of what the package instructions say:

http://flash.lymenet.org/ubb/ultimatebb.php/topic/1/122131#000000

This is what all lyme doctors tell their patients. So sorry you forgot and got sick. That's what happens if you take doxy on an empty stomach. Big no-no.

at TF - thanks. I'm new to all this stuff, diagnosed and started meds just last Thurs. There is a lot to remember. I'm concentrating on just trying to keep the meds organized by day! I did buy a pill sorter - that sure helps.

I managed to take 1 Doxy when I got home from work, (before I read this post), became nauseated, kept sipping water when I feel quezzy - that worked. The pill stayed down!!

Still have one more to get into me for the day! I just ate so maybe I should take it now.

MIDDLE OF THE MEAL is the key.

I had a hard time adjusting to Doxy as well. I took it with either oatmeal or toast...anything else made me sick or gave me nausea for ~2 hours. But, with these foods, I was fine. You might also want to try ginger tea or Deglycerized Licorice (I took a product called Rhizinate) to help with the nausea. They both made a world of difference! Good luck!!

My doc told me that the insert doxycycline comes with from the pharmacy is outdated. It's the same insert as for tetracycline (which must be taken away from food).

Doxycycline is the improved version of the drug and can be taken with most food, but not with calcium (most dairy).

I know that a lot of people are on low-carb diets here, but to be honest, only eating something like crackers, toast, rice cakes, hot cereal etc.... before doxy made it tolerable.

Also, the capsules made me throw up, but the tablets didn't.
