Hello. Just got a PICC line for Rocephin in today and need to know around what meds./supplements can I take Actigall twice a day. Is it safe to take near abx, liver supps., Atenolol, probiotics. I just don't want to mess up my other meds or not get the most out of my Actigall.
Thank you.

Cattail,
I took my Actigal with am and pm IV Rocephin and other ABX. I took Atenolol in am only, along with ABX and selective supplements. Milk Thisle for liver support was also taken with am and pm abx.
Take your probiotics 2 hrs before or two hours after ABX.

Hi.
Is actigall necessary for every case of someone using IV roceph?
I am pulsing IV roceph starting next week and want to know other things I can do to help prevent sludge.

It is my understanding that Actigall is always necessary unless the patient's gallbladder has been removed.
If you don't take the Actigall, you could end up having to have surgery to remove your gallbladder.

Thanks TF and Droid for your input on this.
I am concerned if I go too low on the low carb, then I will need to increase dietary fat a bit, and then may have issues with billary sludging.
Droid-when you mentioned you didn't change your diet and had no problems, if you don't mind me asking, what was your diet like? Were you doing low carb or low fat etc?

I just wanted to chime in here with my experience with IV Rocephin and Actigall, but keep in mind that everyone's body is different..
I started taking Actigall as soon as I started IV Rocephin because I had read about others' experiences with sludging, and I thought I had my bases covered.
One month after I began IV Rocephin I started having horrible gallbladder attacks nightly and I finally ended up in the ER because I was vomiting from so much pain.
The ultrasound showed a bit of sludge but more importantly, it caught a gallstone being passed at that very moment into the intestines while I was having the ultrasound done.
I ended up having surgery to remove the gallbladder the next day. The report came back saying that I had many gallstones of various sizes in my gallbladder.
So, I agree with faithful777... Actigall is not a guarantee.
I do believe that the IV Rocephin was stimulating the gallbladder in an attempt to kill the Lyme bacteria that was hiding out in there, hence the violent spasms and passing of the stones because when I told my LLMD about the gallbladder problem, he explained that borrelia likes to take up residence there, and many of his patients who end up removing their gallbladders report that they actually feel better afterward (bacterial load down).
Once again, everyone is different so don't let my story scare you. (I've had Lyme&co for at least 20 years) and this is in no way a warning against taking IV Rocephin. It has been a very helpful drug for many.
P.S. I am functioning very well without my gallbladder... I don't even notice the difference..if anything, less bloating and better digestion so perhaps my gallbladder was not even working correctly these last couple of years
