I need some opinions . My son has been treating with Zithromax and amoxicillin for a year now .

He has been symptom free for three or four months . We have not seen the dr (dr J-leading pediatric lyme doctor) in over six months because we didn't have the money to do so .

He has not been on any cyst busters or anything in the time he has been treating .

We were thinking of taking him off the meds but will be doing so without talking to the dr first . Is this a bad idea ? Should he be on a cyst buster first ?

I just don't want to have to travel over nine hours and pay tons of money to see the dr if all he's going to do us keep him on the same meds ( which we have plenty of at home ) . Should we put him on a natural cyst buster ?? And if so, what and his much ?

He's four and weighs 36 pounds . I just dont want to keep him on meds unnecessarily and risk causing other problems but I'm fearful of taking him off maybe too soon ?

PS the doctor does not do just phone consults as right now he is under the watchful eye so I cant just call and ask.

thanks

This is a tough question. We had both our girls in treatment. When they began experiencing less symptoms and seemed symptom free, the LLMD prescribed a cyst buster.

They both took a cyst buster for three weeks. Each child had an increase in symptoms for a few days, then went back to being symptom free.

We continued on antibiotics for another month and transitioned them to herbs.

That is what we did. Every little ache and pain makes me wonder but at some point, their bodies have to fight the infection.

There is always a risk to benefit ratio. It is tough to determine when that is.

Soccermama- What meds were your girls on? I find it kind of weird that my son has been on the same meds for over a year..

Also, do they have coinfections?

I think you need to see the doctor. To my mind, it is time to add a cyst buster.

I am an adult, but when I was treated for lyme with just amoxicillin and no cyst buster, as soon as I stopped the meds, I was sick again. It only took 2 weeks. I finally switched lyme doctors and the new doc added a cyst buster, did coinfection testing, and then treated me for the coinfections that I had also.

So, I would not want to end your child's treatment this way. You don't want to "undo" all that has been accomplished so far. Hopefully, a month or so of a cyst-buster and he will be finished.

You need to get the doctor to decide. I can't imagine he would just say to stay the course, not with what you are telling us here. It is time to change meds, add a new med, etc.

I agree with TF. My spouse and child and me all thought we had sufficiently treated our infections and suffered disastrous consequences when we stopped our meds for various reasons.

It actually set us even further back in our recovery.

Give your llmd the opportunity to weigh in on the treatment plan.

And definitely need to make sure that you are addressing all of the co-infections. We found out the hard way that if you don't address the co-infections aggressively that you will not be able to recover from lyme.

Good luck!
