Anyone know of off gassing essential oils I can blend together for an insect repellent?

I appreciate DEET is the very best. But I try to reduce my chemical exposure unless necessary.

I was having nightmares last night about being on a safari in Africa but not having adequate insect/tick repellent on.
I was trying to buy permethrin soaked clothes but couldn't speak the language.

I really need some essential oil repellent I can use daily at home.

And save the DEET for more high risk activities. (Like walking on grass or sitting on benches in parks [Eek!] )

Clove oil, thieves oil (clove and cinnamon blend)
Geranium
www.youngliving.com

They both will keep you bug free (and smelling fab!) I personally find that the geranium is less offensive to people around you.

Hi Greta,

Wise Woman Bug Spray works for mosquitoes when I've used it (it seems to have some tick ingredients like geranium). You can spray it directly on clothes and not on the skin which I like and it doesn't take much.

I can't tolerate much essential oils either, so I tried this (and I don't recommend it).

I made a natural repellent last year (I put it on my entire body). The first time out with it I got reinfected with Lyme and lots of other stuff.

I mixed it up myself (all the repellent herbs and made the strongest tea imaginable because I have problems with essential oil VOCs and the out gassing too).

Something that did not have ANY odor (except for some alcohol when it was sprayed) was Coleman Deet-free Skin Smart insect repellent. No respiratory problems, no rash, but my skin felt a little itchy so I stopped using it (less of an odor than the Avon one which did have a chemical smell and I found irritating).

I don't know if the Coleman's will work by just spraying on your clothes, but worth taking a look at.

Great! Thanks so much Judie!

I am petrified of biting insects now. They're the devils minions, as far as I'm concerned.

Young Living also has a ready-to-go blend called "Purification." It contains lemongrass, citronella, rosemary cineol, melaleuca, lavandin and myrtle.

A family member just returned from Africa and managed to come home without malaria.

I sent her with Thieves, purification, lavender and peace and calming from young living oils ( I do not sell these). She said it didn't seem to matter which one she put on, they all helped inside. You can layer the oils or mix with mineral water in a spray bottle. Unfortunately, in Africa she did have to a Deet up for outside due to the horrendous bug problem where she resided.

So, I guess for a minor mosquito problem try the oils- for a problem zone- Deet.

She also said the purification helped with itching. On the plane for 14 hours the lady next to her had a sloppy cold. She said she sprayed the thieves and used the drops and stayed well.

Good luck!

I'm glad your family member stayed well, but gosh, I would have gotten so ill if someone was spraying aromatics on a plane that I was on.

I have respiratory problems and THE WORST is when someone uses scented products around me, especially on a plane.

A 14-hour plane ride would have put me in serious respiratory distress.
