NorVect is arranging an international conference about vector-borne diseases at The Grand Hotel in Oslo, May 26th and May 27th 2014.
Some of the world’s leading experts, scientists and medical doctors have accepted our invitation to come and share the latest research, as well as their own experiences on the subject matter.
We are honored to welcome the following speakers:
Joseph J. Burrascano Jr., MD Richard I. Horowitz, MD Edward B. Breitschwerdt, DVM Alan MacDonald, MD Eva Sapi Ph.D. Christian Perronne, Ph.D, MD Jyotsna Shah, Ph.D, CCLD, MBA Judith Miklossy, Ph.D, MD, DSc Carl-Morten Motzfeld Laane, Ph.D Randi Eikeland, Ph.D, MD Bela Bozsik, MD Armin Schwarzbach, Ph.D, MD Åshild Andreassen, Ph.D
A rapidly increasing number of people are getting chronically ill due to insufficient diagnostics and treatment of Lyme disease and co-infections.
Recent figures from the US (Center for Disease Control, CDC) report that the number of infected with Lyme Disease is indeed 10 times higher than previously anticipated – that is 300.000 per year in the US. New estimates from Scotland confirm a 1000% increase of infected people over the last decade.
An ongoing Scandinavian collaborative (Scandtick) demonstrates a modest estimate of about 40,000 infected with vector-borne diseases in the Öresund/Kattegat/Skagerrak-region last year. This is strongly contradictory to the 255 infected that was the official infection rate in Norway in 2012.
It has become evident that we need much more research regarding vector-borne diseases, in order to develop sufficient diagnostic tools, and to give adequate treatment to patients.
However, in the medical communities there is a discrepancy regarding what direction one should take, that is, how to diagnose correctly and how to treat sufficiently. Increasingly more Norwegian doctors realize that there is an urgent need for more knowledge, new research and expertise from medical communities outside Norway to meet this growing number patients falling ill to these diseases.
With this in mind, NorVect has three goals for this conference: Emphasis on recent research
The field of vector-borne diseases still presents many unsolved mysteries. It encompasses complex illnesses and embraces various disciplines. With this conference NorVect wishes to bring forward the most recent international research on vector-borne diseases by some of the leading experts in the world. Innovation and curiosity are two essential keywords.
We want the medical communities to express openness, curiosity, participation and a desire to drive knowledge creation nationally and internationally. Emphasis on dialogue, cooperation and exchanging experiences
The conference will gather some of the most renowned physicians and scientists, and we hope this may create a solid ground for dialogue and exchange of experiences.
This is an opportunity for making international contacts, connecting with various medical disciplines, and for commencing potential future co-operations. This conference will hopefully provide inspiration to put more emphasis on research nationally. Emphasis on the patients’ needs
The aid towards patients suffering from vector-borne diseases has been insufficiently addressed over the last decades. On behalf of these patients, NorVect demands change and more vigor.
NorVect wants this conference to contribute to patients being seen, heard and respected (Patient stories reveal otherwise). Increased knowledge regarding how the various vector-borne diseases affect patients, may hopefully lead to a stronger awareness in the medical community, and by that increasing these patient’s rights and needs. Theme of the conference
Diagnostics and treatment of Lyme Borrelisosis will naturally be the key topics at this conference.
Emphasis will also be placed on other infections transmitted by vectors, so-called co-infections such as Bartonellosis, Babesiosis, Anaplasmosis and Ehrlichiosis. These are, relatively speaking, rather unknown to the Norwegian medical community, and need further emphasis. When a patient has multiple ongoing infections, diagosis and treatment become immensely challenging. The speakers attending this conference, including researchers, biologists and clinicians, have different backgrounds and many years of experience within the field and will share their knowledge on these different subjects.
Also topics such as the link between Lyme and other serious neurodegenerative illnesses (MS, Alzheimer etc.) will be presented.
The Norwegian Lyme Borreliosis Association and The Association for Borrelia-infected Children are also contributors to this conference.
