It won't work if there is an infectious organism hiding inside the cells being attacked. This has been my experience with this sort of "desensitization" treatment - it did not work because of the INFECTION.
Get rid of the infection CAUSING the autoimmunity, and you "cure" the autoimmunity (i.e., remove the body's need to attack itself).
