so... the CPAP is not an answer for me, migraines, tooth aches, ear aches... I have an appt today with a dentist for a mouth guard. I am experimenting with natural options so far no luck.

I have another appointment with the sleep dr. to talk this through...

but my gut tells me he is going to just tell me CPAP or no ambien.

new regulations is also keeping my PCP from prescribing.

In my heart of hearts I feel this has been the best drug for me in my entire life... I have been not sleeping way before lyme, but now that lyme is controlled... with ambien, i have so much more energy, I am exercising for the first time in my life, I have energy to go out after work, and I'm handling stress so much better. without ambien, i drag myself to exercise, I am achier, and I always feel like I'm fighting something and on the verge of tears.

I am sensitive to different generic manufacturers... and the lesser dose works sometimes but not others.

so, what kind of specialist would I see that would take in the whole picture--- weigh the risks and benefits and feel comfortable subscribing or at least working through other options?

is there a medicine management dr?

a fibro specialist?

thanks for your help.

My husband's psychiatrist gives him ambien and has done so for over 10 years. However, hubby has a diagnosed mental illness.

But, perhaps a psychiatrist is worth a try for you. You have to go to them every 3 months, generally. This is called "medication management." We got it down to every 6 months after a few years and some negotiating.

He takes both ambien and melatonin every night.

I had to triple my glycine recently and my phosphatidylserine to sleep. A Naturopathic Doctor may be able to help.

Top Five Questions People Ask About Night Guards on the Internet (Q & A w/doctor on night guards)

Don't get and NTI device as a night guard. Within a year it shifted my teeth. I almost had to get braces.

"NTI stands for Nociceptive Trigeminal Inhibition. Very clever name. I don’t know how often the NTI causes an anterior open bite—a situation where the front teeth don’t touch and only the very back ones do. And yet I see it in my office frequently"

(my bite looked like this after a year, but these aren't my teeth)

Hello Kudz,
Sorry to hear you are struggling with sleep.

I have a mouthguard. It helped in the past.

I checw through about a mouthguard a year.

Yesterday, my doc did ozone prolotherapy on my jaw.

I slept very well.

Maybe something to consider if a moutguard isn't your thing.

I take melatonin, ltheanine and 5HTP, plus sometimes a subligual ambien to sleep.

I know what you mean about it sometimes being the only thing that helps.

Hope your doc understands.

Maybe a pain specialist doc?

Edited because I mixed up the supplements. It says 5HTP on the bottle, ltheanine and melatonin. NOT gaba. Sorry friends.

I am so sorry it's been such a struggle.

I go to a 15 minute monthly appt. at a psychologist for my Lunesta prescript - they check my vitals, weight, he asks how I'm doing- insurance covered.

In nearly all states a psychologist cannot write a prescription.

So, before you spend money on one, find out if your state allows the psychologist to prescribe meds for patients.

Psychologists are not medical doctors; psychiatrists are.

I probably meant to write psychiatrist in my previous post- honestly, not sure how far his MD degree goes, but he is a mental health prescribing Dr.

When we met, it was not for therapy, as the appts. are literally 15 minutes long. I had brought copies of lyme tests, a recent CBC,

and was frank and honest about my insomnia, history, etc.
Seems to be a business growing here for this need, regular family Dr.s must be getting heat.

Thanks folks. Last few nights I have slept (well, as well as on lower dose ambien) from a product called sleep optimizer from Jarrow. The dose is 2 capsules and I've been taking one.

It has valerian, hops, Melissa, tryptophan, and gaba.

I am a little worried about the herbals cause of allergies. But so far, no reaction. (Fingers crossed)
