I just got results of an EEG that were abnormal. Neurologist thinks it could be related to tick borne illness and says I am at risk of developing seizures. I also have abnormal brain spect scan, abnormal pet scan of the brain, and abnormal neuro psych testing.
Will an abnormal EEG support IV ABX treatment with the insurance companies? I was refused further coverage after 1 month in the recent past. I have vestibular damage, hearing loss, and many unpleasant symptoms all radiating from the skull and ears.
I am treating aggressively with oral ABX for brucellosis now, but it doesn't seem to be helping me in any way. I really think I need to return to IV ABX. Anyone here have abnormal EEG and did it make a difference as far as insurance company covering your treatment?

Sorry to hear about your head area problems. Is that the right word? Head area? Oh well, tis late.
Sorry to say, insurance is insurance and a stinky company won't be swayed by much of anything. If you were 1,000,000% right it still leaves them room to deny.
The test results COULD help, but I won't say it will. Wouldn't lose hope either. I'd push for it.
May I suggest having your doc put all the evidence together and put it in a - forgot that word now- oh- letter of medical necessity. That is usually what is required to get more treatment. That **and the fact you had another tick bite** Remember that, a new case on top of the old.
And since you will be going for it... I'd toss in a slight- not screaming- mention of the ILADS guidelines as YOUR choice for treatment (patient autonomy).
And any mention by them of IDSA guidelines or studies supporting their denial should be rebutted strongly, especially since the IDSA guidelines were recently pulled off the National Guideline Clearinghouse, are below parr, and they are over 10 years old now.

Thanks for the good advice, Tincup. We also have a Lyme bill on the table in MA that is going to be voted on soon. That could make all the difference! I just hope this time it passes.
