What are the most effective OTC sleep remedies you've found?

I think I'm looking for something that doesn't exist, but I'm going to try. I'd like help with my insomnia, of course, but more than that I'd like to find something that can knock me out when my migraines are bad and I just want to go into a coma until they're gone.

Yeah, I know...not gonna happen. But maybe something you suggest (other than Bendryl) will help the insomnia. I send my undying gratitude to anyone who can help with that!

I'm in the search for this now too.

Benadryl has worked well for me for many years, but its dosage is getting up there and I'm looking at other options.

5HTP, tryptophan and melatonin did not work for me -

I went to the health food store this past weekend and raided the herbal books there and will be testing sample herbs.

They mentioned hops, chamomile, kava kava, passion flower, schizandra, valerian, wild lettuce, corydalis, rooibos, lemon balm, lavendar, scullcap, wild oats, bacopa, St John's wort, holy basil.

I plan to test them to see whether I pass any, and whether it makes me tired. Tiresome, but worth it if it works out, I guess.

ashwagandha mentioned as an adaptogen, to work over time.

Another idea - LDN - low dose naltrexone works for some. People start at a low dose like 1.5mg and go to 3.0.

Stephen Buhner now recommends LIQUID Melatonin - has to be liquid. I use NutritionWorks "Sleep Soundly Melatonin". I also take 1 Valerian capsule before going to bed. If I wake up in the middle of the night, I take another dose of Sleep Soundly Melatonin as long as it isn't too close to morning.

During the day, I take Cat's Claw for Borrelia and Houytenia & Japanese Knotweed for Bartonella. I take Sida Acuta, Alchornea and Cryptolepis for Babesia since Lyme and Co cause insomnia.

Valerian, skullcap and hops can be habit forming if you have addiction tendencies and can make you feel kinda groggy if you take too much.

Skullcap is a mint, so make sure you take it hot -- mints are funny in that taken hot they're sedating, and taken cold they're stimulating. I found that out the hard way.

Chamomile is very mild, I'm not sure if you can take enough to make a difference with insomnia problems. For mild sleep problems, possibly -- I've found it to be calming but not sleep-inducing.

(Chamomile is good for menstrual cramps, though, especially when you combine the tincture 1:1 with raspberry leaf tincture. You can make your own tinctures at home very easily.)

Robin123, will you be using the lavender in an ingestible form or as a sachet? It's definitely calming as a sachet, which can help you sleep if you just need to relax a bit, but I've never tried it medicinally. I'll be interested to hear how you're going to use it.

I have fresh lemon balm in my yard, I'm going to try that -- will start with a tea, maybe make a tincture. Thanks for the suggestions, Robin123. Definitely let us know if you find something that works!

5htp has helped me but can be upsetting to the stomach, doable with food

Liquid melatonin by NOW is cheap and really knocks you but I wake after a few hours but then you can do a few more droppers.

I find the melatonin can leave me a little groggy and I stopped taking it because it has sugar(yeast for me).
