Could someone please give me a crash course in heavy metals?
This is one (of the few) areas I have not explored/addressed. I took a test that showed no metals at all, but it was not the provoked test.
Do I need to take the DMSA provoked test to show if I have any metals?
Is there another reliable test instead?
I have a sulfa drug allergy - can I take DMSA in the challenge?
How to find a doctor who is certified to do chelation and testing?
Which web sites/resources have reliable info on this?
Is this area worth exploring?

As I understand it, lyme can cause the body to retain heavy metals. Or, the patient could have a lot of heavy metals in the body due to past experiences, amalgams, etc.
If you have high loads of heavy metals, it can prevent lyme treatment from working. You have to get the metal load down to normal before treating and having success.
The sources I have read (various lyme doctor writings) say that you need to use a provocation test to find out if you have high heavy metals. Here is Burrascano on the subject:
"a small but significant number of these [lyme] patients harbor toxic levels of heavy metals. Challenge testing by knowledgeable, experienced clinicians is necessary for evaluation.
Treatment must be directed toward correcting the specific abnormalities found, and post-treatment retesting to assess efficacy of treatment and endpoint of therapy should be done. Suspect this when poor immune responsiveness and persistent neuropathic signs and symptoms are present." (p. 21)
Right now, there are a few threads on LymeNet talking about sulfa allergy and asking about how to find a good doctor to chelate heavy metals.
I hope some post these sources as many folks on here need to consider this.
