I'm supposed to bump up my Bactrim dose to really a lot of Bactrim.

I'm not afraid of it, but I've read a person shouldn't take it if they have a folate deficiency. I don't have a folate deficiency but I'm wondering if I should be supplementing if I'm taking like a crapload of Bactrim.

Anyone know? The literature is a little murky.

I would definitely start taking, or increase your intake, of methylfolate. Bactrim works by inhibiting the methylfolate absorption of the bugs, but it also inhibits the host's methylfolate uptake too.

So, I would think it should be taken between Bactrim doses. I've often wondered if increasing folate intake will just cancel out the Bactrim's effect, but I don't think so, as they do recommend that children with folate deficiencies who are on Bactrim supplement with folate.

I don't have sources for this off-hand, but I remember reading pubmed articles about it.

I read a lot of them too but it was never clear to me if it was only stopping folate synthesis in the bugs or if that extended also to me. I feel like I've seen both suggested.

I am supplementing some with a multi; guess it's good to do just in case.

Jordana...

I'm a little confused...could you clarify?

You recently posted that although your recent blood smear for other coinfections was clear, you previously tested positive for Ehrlichia:

http://flash.lymenet.org/scripts/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=135182;p=0

You also posted that Bactrim would make an Ehrlichia infection worse:

http://flash.lymenet.org/scripts/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=134835;p=0#000000

Why, then, would you be taking Bactrim, and considering "bumping up" your dose to "really a lot"?

I've already taken a lot of minocycline and I'm also taking doxycycline now.

I think the doc thinks I have babs based on my symptoms. Funny thing, I'm not really herxing on it or the doxy so far.
