I'm communicating with a woman from New York about how I make Buhner tinctures. Buhner uses alcohol but she wants to make alcohol-free tinctures. Does anyone know how effective glycerine is vs. alcohol? Or how to substitute glyerine for alcohol? Does glycerine cross the blood brain barrier?
Thanks.

The main advantage of using glycerin instead of alcohol in extraction is to avoid the use of the alcohol. The main disadvantage is that glycerin is inferior to alcohol both as a solvent and as a preservative. Glycerites are almost always less potent than alcohol-based extracts, and they have a shorter expected shelf life.

- Some glycerin comes from corn, just regular and maybe even with farm chemicals and GMO-stock.
Mountain Rose Herbs carries glycerin. That would likely be a clean source, though, still if it's any "vegetable" oil you might not be sure from which vegetable. -
