I'd love to follow bpeck's protocol & take a month off of abx after each month on, so I could detox a bit. My last herx was so bad, I wondered if so much is accumulating in my blood from all the abx & the toxins that I'm hypersensitive to everything. If I took a few weeks off, maybe the next herx wouldn't be as hard.

Yet, after just 6 days off after my last rifampin herx, I'm feeling the crawling sensations in my brain again, strong brain fog, pressure in my head & ears, peripheral neuritis, and vibrations in my right eye, spine & diaphrag again. It makes me afraid to stay off.

Bpeck, how did you keep from panicking and going immediately back on abx after finishing a round? Did you not get symptoms back right after you went off of one abx?

Does anyone else have success taking some time off to detox? I've never been able to get past 6 days before my symptoms feel like they're getting the better of me again and I panick and run to the abx bottle.

I think it's best to "detox as you go", only totally stopping in the case of a bad reaction or really severe Herxheimer. Otherwise you may encourage selection among the Bb bacteria for resistance to the abx that you have been taking.
I had to stop for awhile during my ...'celebrex' disaster, but for the most part was encouraged by my doc not to take too many breaks.
For detoxing, some llmd's used to use cholestyramine; I don't know if that protocol is still in favor as I haven't seen so much about it lately.
Other possibilities are:
Lots of detoxifying herbal teas
psyllium husk powder (Seemed quite helpful)(1tsp/10 oz water)
detoxifying herbal teas
Lots of good water

My eyes were my big complicating factor.

Abx made them worse. Everything, including other symptoms and pain were weighed against my eyes.

I found thru trial and error, that if I started at low dose abx, ramped them up, then ramped them down I could tolerate going off them.

At first, I had the same weird thing happen - that after I went off abx, my other Lyme symptoms seemed to come back in a few days .
So I tried weaning off. And for some reason that worked. So consequently my doses of abx were not at all constant...

Also - I was taking between 1 and 2 grams of ibuprofen a day (that seemed to quiet pain/symptoms to bearable)... and that stayed pretty constant for a long time - on or off abx.

No one's more surprised than I am that I feel good. I'd felt so bad for so long it was a way of life.

Thank you so much for your feedback. The idea of ramping down when one needs to go off of abx that get into your brain makes sense. People who take anxiolytics or antidepressants that affect the brain chemistry have to do that.
