Hi Twinkles,

I have bartonella and I have tried many different treatments but none of them have seemed to lick it. Right now I'm on Levaquin and Nexium (a proton pump inhibitor that's supposed to help the Levaquin work better) and it seems to be doing something - I'm herxing quite badly from it. I've also tried Doxy and Rifampin which I couldn't tolerate (severe nausea) but some people find that works. I think those are the two most commonly used treatments. Cipro is also used sometimes but it's very similar to Levaquin so I think they can be used pretty interchangably. I'm on this combo for a month total and then I'll be reevaluated. Supposedly a month of this rather harsh treatment is supposed to take care of it (my LLMD said this is what Dr. B does). I hope that's right!

A number of combinations for Bartonella treatment have been discussed.
I can't say which would be best for you.

A couple years ago, I took Biaxin & Levaquin, but there is a chance of tendon damage with Levaquin (I didn't have a problem).
Some are using Rifampin now, but I don't remember what they put with it.

Until someone responds with specific recommendations, you could read up on the subject.

At the top right, click the little word "search", type in Bartonella, click Med Questions, entire message, & last 30 days. Lots of links will come up.

One you may want to read is http://flash.lymenet.org/ubb/Forum1/HTML/025460.html
Read the links included in the responses, too.

"Diag Hints & Treat Guidelines..." - 32 pages of excellent info. Print a copy. www.ilads.org/burrascano_1102.htm
pages 4-5 & 20-24: Co-infections

"Bartonella Alert" is good but no specifics about treatment. http://flash.lymenet.org/ubb/Forum1/HTML/008362.html

Don't know much about your situation, but was wondering -
Should you be evaluated by a Lyme Literate Med Dr (LLMD) & then your local dr could consult with the LLMD?

You'd have treatment prescribed by someone who sees a lot of Tick-Borne Diseases (TBDs).
Would eliminate the guesswork and your dr would have the chance to learn from a LLMD with expertise in TBDs.
