I don't know what is going on. My regimen of Biaxin and Plaquenil and supplements has not changed (though I have tried to reduce abx three times and have had to go back to daily every time) over the past 11 months, but recently I have been getting new symptoms.

In particular, my knees are now affected, very sore and achy and sometimes stiff feeling. BUT...my main concern right now is headaches. I have not previously had them as a Lyme symptom, but because I have never had them like with this intensity before, I am guessing they are Lyme-related.

They are so strong and go across my forehead and towards my temples. 800 mg Advil helps for a while, but then when it starts to wear off, it all comes back. I just want to close my eyes. I don't think they are official migraines, but they are pretty debilitating.

I have put a call into my LLMD. I just saw him on Friday but this had not come up yet. Are there any suggestions of things to try to ease them or any thoughts on why they are happenign now?
(By the way, I did do a search on headaches last night, but I would love some other perspectives now.)

Thank you.
Julie

Hi,

Perhaps you need to change antibiotics?

Julie,

Could be Lyme-related. Have you suddenly started doing aerobic exercise? Do hot showers bring on the headaches or make them worse?

Do you feel worse at home or if the windows are closed? If the headaches started just after turning on heat for the winter and your system uses some sort of petroleum product, I would check it out for malfunction. Sometimes there are left-over combustion products that are poisonous and you have to get a cleaning done. Also make sure that your carbon monoxide detector is working.

Are there new building odors or rugs or furniture outgassing formaldyhyde and other nasty things? Sometimes the only remedy for this kind of headache is to remove the offending material or get out of the noxious environment.

Probably Lyme/med related but if the intensity lasts--well, get a work up.

Good info above. We can suddenly become terribly chemically sensitive.

And it could well be migraine. My MD told me that you can have migraine headaches with no pain. No joke. I had seen gold shapes to the left side of my temple. He said migraine--don't have to have pain. Not sure I bought that.

But you can have them (migraines) with lower intensity.

Let us hear back what your LLMD said and what the conclusion is.

Choc.

Thanks for your thoughts. I had never considered home-related things and intitially thought that if those were a problem my family would be suffering too. Then I read Chocolat's post and realized that with Lyme I guess I could be the one to react and not my family.

My LLMD said that I am probably herxing (which does make sense because of my knees and, I am ashamed to admit, my returning rage). He told me to not take my meds for two days and then to add the abx for one day and then the Plaquenil after that. If the headaches don't go away or if they return with the meds, I am to call him.

In the meantime, I keep popping the Advil. I just worry because I am not keepign very good accounts of when I last took it.

Thank you all for your help.

Julie

Hi Julie,
I have had the same thing. Since starting clindomycin and mepron, I wake up with terrible headaches in the morning, particularly in the back of my head and neck.

I take two excedrin and they go away but this is a new development since I started meds. Also have developed screeching sound in my ears.

I keep thinking that is has something to do with my vestibular system since that is where my worst symptoms are (awful vertigo).

I think it is something to do with herxing.

My daughter had a sudden-onset, very longlasting chronic headache (years) on the same drugs. When I have time I'll write more about that.

I just wanted to say quickly that Advil can cause a lot of rebound problems if taken more than 2-3 times a week. I researched this last year and found that Aleve has the best record for no rebounds. You might even need to taper off the Advil.

More later. So sorry for your pain.

You don't mention if you have any other neurological problems with your lyme.

My husband has primary symptoms of tremors/myoclonus/seizures and nausea/vomiting/dry heaves.

He recently started having severe headaches,
fevers, chills, night sweats, and joint/bone/muscle aches also. These are all new symptoms since he started trying to treat babesia.

He has a PICC line and I discovered that IV heparin 5000 units usually helps his headaches very quickly and effectively. Aleve also helps with other pains.

He has tried Nattokinase 5 capsules 2 times daily, but that didn't help. We have some Lumbrokinase on order. He can't do the heparin shots any longer due to touch and pain sensitivities and the sublingual heparin is too expensive.

Have you been tested by Hemex lab for coagulation problems? This is common with Lyme and other infections.

Julie,

I feel for you. Sometimes, some meds that I have been on have caused me a problem with headaches even though they havent in the past. I was just simply too toxic and needed a break.

BUT headaches ARE my lyme symptom, and severe ones at that. I just try everythign not to let them come back.

Rebound headache is real! You can definately rebound with a headache from headache meds or sinus meds.

Perhaps the onset of dry cold weather along with turning on the heat is plaguing you with sinus headaches? Just a thought, because this is what happened to me this week. The headache you describe is classic of a sinus headache. Do you have a humidifier in your home/office? Are your eyes kind of achey?

Adding some humidity to the air might just moisten up the sinuses and relieve the pain. I made the connection after walking outside and getting hit with the cold air, and sudden onset of headache. Running the humidifier at night and in the office cleared it up completely. I also started using saline nasal spray again.

It could also be Lyme-related, but sometimes it isn't. Particularly if you things like a deviated septum.

Julie, have you been tested and or clinically evaluated for coinfections including but not limited to Babesiosis, Bartonella, and Mycoplasma? If not, you should mention this to your LLMD.

There are different meds for these coinfections. I have similar headaches and Biaxin and Plaquenil didn't help them at all.

I thank you again for all of your continued ideas. My headaches have subsided a bit during this two day break from meds, but they are not gone completely; I am apprehensive about trying my abx again tomorrow.

I have had some neuro problems in the past, in particular, vertigo and dizziness, so perhaps I am more prone to this than I realize.

It is just so discouraging to feel as if I should be making headway and instead I am having these new setbacks.

I know I am not alone, though, and that helps.

Thank you.

Julie
